It's official - we're on the other side of the world!! 12 hour time difference and the furthest we've ever been away from home. After our pretty seamless flight from Indonesia and our obligatory McDonald's from our favourite airport, Kuala Lumpur, we arrived in Auckland. We immediately noticed the air was soooooo much fresher than any of the places we've been too. It was a lovely spring sunny evening. It should also be noted at this point in the blog - our lungs are having a double holiday as we have stopped smoking! We eventually got to the hostel 'Silverfern'. DO NOT EVER STAY HERE. It was horrible. More like a squat/AA meeting area. The dorms stank of all sorts and most horrifying for us was that it was the most expensive place to date we've ... read more

...when Spring looks like this, why would you need to! The perfect Spring lazy day : recycling, shopping, cooking and playing the guitar for the cows! I bought a tiddly little BBQ last weekend for away trips but the weather is so nice today that I broke it out and had a go. Firstly I cooked 'beef flavoured breakfast style sausages' that I picked up in the rottons and offs at Countdown last week. I was not optimistic. They cooked much better than I thought they would and although the description reeks of low quality, they tasted pretty bloody good when BBQ'd. I also bought some reduced lamp shoulder steaks so why not eh! They were delish! Made kebabs with Lebanese flatbreads and now just sat on the sofa contemplating a snooze. POTATO UPDATE : Ok ... read more

The first question you probably have is 'why?' The answer is because at the end of every trip we land in Auckland and instead of taking our flight home to Wellington we crave leaving the airport and hitchhiking home. We simply don't want the adventure to end, and emboldened by managing to get ourselves around and returning intact from wherever we have been gallivanting around, it is hard to resist the temptation. But then the reality of needing to get back for cats, dogs or work kicks in and we duly get on the plane. So it has long been there as something we want to do. The tipping point from 'want' to 'do' was meeting 4 Russian hitchhikers on the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. They were fabulously bonkers - upbeat, optimistic, embracing life. They had ... read more

I have just checked in and got my boarding pass - despite the fact it is still about 40 hours until I need to be at the airport! Technology is grand, sometimes. So, I am really just testing my new blog site and spamming everyone to let you know that I am off on another adventure very soon. This time to India. It is about 24 years since I was there last. Yes, I know one or two of you weren't even born then. I hope you come along for the ride. I'll try to keep the commentary short and the photos interesting. See you soon, Gaynor... read more

Hey there guys! Sorry I've been so quiet of late - been really ill and still suffering the effects of flu bugs that I've no resilience to. Next BIG adventure will kick in 2 weeks today as I am going to South Island for 7 days to re-trace some of the stuff I so loved in 2011. But...I treated myself to a ticket to see the All Blacks face the Springboks at QBE Albany yesterday and OH MY GOSH was it a good choice! A brilliant night spent with Kiwis, Aussies and SA's culminating in a crushing defeat of the 'boks by the Blacks. Katie has now been kitted out with 1cm thick 'gym mats' in the rear which will provide the much needed flat sleeping surface to properly enjoy the wilds of South Island. Anyway...no ... read more

Michelle kindly dropped us to the local airport & so we were off on our journey at last. A 45 min flight with a tail wind. Easy enough to locate our hotel...there were markings on the ground pointing us in the right direction. A good but short nights sleep...awake at 4am & found easy access to the International Airport. Reccomend the Ibis Auckland Airport Hotel. Very simple, clean, tidy, great shower and very comfy bed & pillows.... read more

Deuxième vol effectué... Singapour Auckland 10h !!

Our flight left Tahiti at 9 AM and we arrived in Auckland NZ after 6 hours of flight, but because we were close to the International Date Line, it was the next day 1 PM which was 22 hours later. Do you follow? The afternoon of arrival was occupied by going to the botanical Gardens which was walking distance. The Tui's were in full force with their unique voice pitches and eerie screeches. These birds feed on nectar and yell out what sounds like obscenities. Actually they were birding in delight! Since the weather was suspect, we stayed only a couple of hours, and then meandered lost, back to our lodgings before dark. Yes lost!. As we were lost, we hit an Indian Depanneur, and managed to pickup some stuff and ask for walking directions. Made ... read more
