After Gisborne, I made my way back to Rotorua where I met Adela, who was traveling at that point with her friend Leini. We had booked rafting but not any type of rafting. No, we did rafting at the Kaituna river where you can find the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world! It was a great experience. The day after I headed to the Coromandel Peninsula. At first, I visited the biggest waterfalls on the North Island also known as the Wairere falls. Then I visited the famous Cathedral Cove but I didn‘t like it so much because it was very crowded. All the more I enjoyed the New Chums Beach. I actually thought that it‘s just a normal beach but then I found out that there is a small hike to a lookout point ... read more

- As I'm running a bit behind with my blogs, there will be another one very soon! - You may or may not remember this from one of my first blogs, but the bus drivers from Stray all have nicknames. Passengers never know their real name, so we all resort to calling them Happy, Pacman and Romeoo, for instance. After Queenstown, Kookie took us to Mount Cook, where we did some amazing walks and saw icebergs! Not only did he take us there, but afterwards he took us to the factory shop of Cookie Time. Granted, he got his name for being a chef rather than a major cookie lover, but I still thought it was all a funny combination. After the Cookie Time factory, I was back in Christchurch. To get to the North Island, ... read more

Blog 26 Part 1: Auckland, New Zealand, April 9 ,2018 – Weather forecast: partly cloudy; passing showers; temperature 22°C, wind 9kts (3 Beaufort) Auckland is situated on a narrow strip of land that forms the most northern peninsula on the North Island. Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is described as one of the loveliest cities in the world and according to a number of surveys, one of its most livable. Maori tribes settled the area as early as the 1300’s long before Europeans came in the 1840’s. Our docking berth was right in the core of the city giving us easy walking access to many sites. Today the excursion John and I took promised to take us to some coastal fortifications. After boarding a twenty-passenger bus we followed a route from the dock area in central ... read more

Well, it's time to wrap the account of this bike trip. It’s now two weeks since it ended, and we're about to head back to the UK after visiting our Australian friends. I wrote this entry whilst sat outside at a street-side café in Mosman, a cute suburb of Sydney, waiting for Pam and Helen to re-appear from a beauty parlour where unmentionable atrocities are being performed by undercover Vietnamese shock troops armed with wax and cuticle knives. Let me explain how I got here from the Green Dragon. We left Hobbiton (which is near Matamata incidentally) bound for Whitianga. We initially had trouble identifying this place on the map following a verbal briefing from John, since “wh” is approximately pronounced as “f” in the Maori language. It’s a seaside resort on Mercury Bay, halfway up ... read more

Today we fly to Auckland. We arrive at the airport early (we allowed extra time to visit a temple en route but it is being redecorated). This gives me 4 hours to decide how to dispose of our remaining $28 in duty free, which bizarrely is playing Christmas carols. I opt for a cheese and pineapple sandwich, a fridge magnet and a jar of chilli chutney. I fall in love with New Zealand before we even land. This is a combination of the view out of plane window as we approach plus the generous amount of wine distributed by the lovely Air New Zealand crew. There is a slight blip at immigration. I try to go through the e-gate but accidentally answer ‘yes’ to the question ‘have you spent any of the past 12 months in ... read more

Day 4: Parekai Springs to Hanua, 120 or so km, more like 140 with all the wrong turns the Donkey took Today was a sad day for both Showponey and the Donkey. Showpony was once again poorly overnight and the two friends agreed that it was not a good idea for Showpony to carry on so the Donkey was suddenly by himself. He panicked as now he had to do all the thinking. Showpony had done most of it till then; he had covered all eventualities including potential calamities some of which had come true. And today was just the day the Donkey needed Showpony more than ever as he had to navigate through Auckland, the biggest city of New Zealand, and it is well known that navigation is not one of a donkey's strengths, in ... read more

While he was at work, Sam offered to loan me his car since there didn’t appear to be much of anything anywhere within walking distance of the house. I’d driven right hand drive in Australia before so I was sure it would all come back to me. I went out to the car, opened the door and staring back at me was a clutch and gear lever. Huh. Well I’m only jet lagged as balls and out of practice, what could possibly go wrong. Turns out I’m a high functioning post-trans-pacific flight-er and everything went just fine. Didn’t even stall. As far as Sam knows. I got back from lunch and I didn’t think I was tired. I just figured I’d rest my eyes for a second. Well that second turned into a couple hours until ... read more

A long day for the Donkey The next morning Showpony and the Donkey awoke to a beautiful day, well suited for biking except for the fact that first they had to get from Auckland to the Cape, a distance of 420km so that was going to take the best part of the day. Showpony and the Donkey biked to the assembly point, just down the road from their hotel, where they met other, like-minded animals, all getting ready for the Tour Aotearoa. There were plenty of donkeys, some horses, a single cat, some kunekune pigs, three large ducks, a flock of sheep, a few shy deer and an Italian goat, and a whole lot of other species but Showpony was the only show pony. The Donkey eyed them all up and informed his friend not to ... read more
