- FOOD: Emu bitter; good, cheap Asian grub; free popcorn at the hostel. - PEOPLE: Know it all family; very few inhabitants. - AREA: Quokka inhabited, tiny paradise island with hundreds of beautiful, white sand, clear turquoise, coral filled sea bays; plenty of varied greenery and very few buildings. Bike without gears to cycle in heaven. Big king lizards. Ferries; nice hostel; 'Million Dollar Baby' DVD at the hostel. - WEATHER: Keep topping up that sunscreen and drinking that water! Sun 11th Sep: I caught a ferry to Rottnest Island (named from a Dutch man who was first to arrive and thought the 'quokka's' were rats - 'Rat's Nest'). The island is only 11k long and 4k wide so I hired a bike to cycle around it's perimeter under the hot sun. Such BEAUTIFUL bays - ... read more

- FOOD: Coffee and cake whilst chilling in the sun; squid and chips and wine. - PEOPLE: Old hippy dormmate with lots of incense; families filling all the many fish and chip restaurants; lary, towny teens. - AREA: Bohemian, small town - Cappucino Alley, nice market, quiet harbour, deserted South Beach with white sand and distant dolphin; 'Little Fish' at the cinema - WEATHER: Occasional sun Sat 10th Sep: I left the horrible hostel early and checked my backpack into the YHA (I caved). Feeling 15 kilos lighter I struggled with the maze of escalators, stairs and platforms at the central station to find my train to Fremantle. This gorgeous town is a lot smaller than I expected, has a bohemian feel and hardly any people walking the streets. After chatting to the old hippy woman ... read more

- FOOD: 2 minute noodles - PEOPLE: Loud snorer as a dormmate; sprawled out dormmate, weird Japanese dormmate, loud hostel mates, patronising woman telling me how to use the obvious to work cooker, drunk man pouring his heart out (get me outta this hostel!). - AREA: Manky hostel with an impossible to reach top bunk; laid back city that I love - Bell Tower, palm tree lined financial district, peaceful and modern buildings, generally nice feel. - WEATHER: Back to the grey and cold Fri 9th Sep: I didn't get much sleep as there was a major snorer in the dorm and it was bloody hot. But I managed to get up in time to catch my flight to Perth. I was very surprised to find that the weather was grey and cold! I found the ... read more

Well, we survived the Gibb River Road. Unfortunately our number plate didn’t and we’ve left it lying somewhere between El Questro and Ellenbrae. Some sections of the road were really corrugated and rough but generally the road was in pretty good condition and we managed an average speed of about 70 kms an hour. We particularly loved Manning Gorge and Bell Gorge where we swam both above and below the falls. Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Gorge where very exciting although Molly was nervous about what she couldn’t see below the water as we waded through the dark and all of us were a bit wary as we walked only metres from huge fresh water crocodiles at Windjana. At the moment we are in Broome and loving the cooler weather (30 degrees rather than 38!) and really ... read more

Following my time working for Don Green, I drove Craig and Loren back to Perth with me, where they were to buy a van and I was to arrange the next leg of my journey... In dire straits for a while, feeling pretty lost having been removed from the 'safety bubble' of Kal. I stayed in a hostel with the Irish girls we had met on during passing thru Kal a month or so earlier. Lacking girly company in Kalgoorlie, I showed the girls the sights and skimpy bars of Kal! In return, they looked after me and took me clubbing in Perth, as it was their last week before heading North. What with Craig and Loren hanging with us in Perth, and Josh bumming around for a few days, it felt like a big chunk ... read more

Hello everyone, I sit here perched on a camp chair (ergonomically uncomfortable) with a myriad of images running through my head since last we added to this blog. (Whilst I’m not directly quoting this from anyone, I may have read it somewhere). Where shall I start, perhaps Kakadu, no, the thought of fabulous sunsets, amazing birdlife, river cruises, crocodiles basking on the banks and ancient rock art would make you too jealous. How about Katherine with it’s hot springs and yet another gorgeous gorge? Okay, too difficult to hear, how about Kunnunurra, where we have swum in the most beautiful secluded waterhole, become even better acquainted with the birdlife and fresh water crocodiles, seen the biggest dam Dam and explored a town that time seemed to have forgotten. But Wyndam does have a nice lookout! How’s ... read more

We arrived in Perth after an overnight stop in Adelaide, in a great YHA Hostel, imagine our disappointment when the Brittania YHA was a very poor relation in comparison. Still we were only sleeping there. We took a walking tour of Perth city centre and ended up down at the river front, where there was a large circus tent - curious as ever - we investigated to discover that it was the Cirque de Soleil. We couldn't get tickets for any of their shows way back in Las Vegas and we were sold the last two for the second last performance that afternoon. Oh my god!!! What a show - it was fantastic, each act was spectacular, better than the previous, if that could be possible, if you ever get the chance to see any of ... read more
