After leaving Albany this morning in Sheila (our new car) we travelled 200km west to Walpole where we were able to reach the Tree Top Walk, the Valley of the Giants and the Ancient empire, all set in stunning national park. The tree top walk is a suspended 300 metre walkway which rises from the entrance to a height of 40 metres so that you are able to get high and walk through the canopy of trees such as the karri and jarrah, pretty spectacular stuff, although quite nerve racking as the metal walk way tended to sway quite a bit when people walked around on it, not good if you have a fear of heights. The ancient empire was cool too with a ground level walk around the forest floor highlighing local species of tree ... read more

Well I have finally bitten the bullet and purchased a car following the recent troubles of getting around by public transport and buses that run every 3 days!!! Its a 1992 Mitsubishi Magna Executive 2.6L 4 cyclinder saloon car with central locking, electric mirrors, the all important air conditioning its 37 degrees at the moment, and the obligatory roo bar for fending off any suicidal kangaroos (hope we dont get to use it ! It cost $5,500 dollars including all the ncessary checks and the MOT equivalent. It then cost $173.25 for 3rd party insurance to cover both me and Oli as designated drivers with a $200 excess. It's only had one previous lady owner, has a full service history, 120,000km on the clock and regularly serviced at 10,000km intervals. THe only problem was it had ... read more

As the cliches suggest, my travels so far have taught me a number of important truths. Foremost among these (a truth my friends have been aware of for a long time) is that I am a notoriously unreliable correspondent. =P The general trend seems to be that I neglect to write at all for months, before suddenly filling my unsuspecting friends' inboxes with a torrent of detailed travel narrative and photos. Hopefully this travel blog will help remedy all that! Those of you who are interested can check back here every now and then to see what trouble I've gotten myself into lately, as I spend the next year away in Asia. I have no idea how often I will update this - possibly every two or three weeks. Those of you who are really keen ... read more

(Dave writes...) Christmas 2005 will be a memorable one, it being our first Christmas away from home and our first on the beach! On Christmas Eve the hostel, Governor Robinsons (see photo - the nicest hostel we've seen) put on a wine and cheese night. We met quite a few others staying there for Christmas, including two English couples - Matt and Michelle, Grace and Andy, a crazy German girl called Katja and a Mancunian named Dan. Spending Christmas with them really made it for us, it was a great group of people and even if Matt was a Liverpool fan we still got along. Afterwards, we headed off to the pub, and from what I remember it was a great night out! Christmas day we woke up a little groggy and sat in bed, opening ... read more

17th December 2005 Albany - Denmark - Walpole - Pemberton After Albany, headed off to Walpole and area in the afternoon * Green Pools @ Denmark was filled with many people swimming and even snorkeling and fishing! We remarked that it was even nicer than the beaches on Rottnest * Valley of the Giants tree-top walk was next - extremely tall trees rising over 60m in height. The walkway reached up to 40m in height and it was short 600m loop walk round the top * The Ancient Empire forest walk greeted us below with many weird-shaped trees. We certainly understood where the name ‘Valley of the GIANTS’ was derived from! Some trees had heights soaring above 60m and girths as wide as 16m! Enroute to Pemberton, * Fernhook falls - dirty, s... read more

Staying in AUGUSTA Having awoken with another hangover from xmas festivities we decided to work it off and hired some bikes from the hostel for $12 each for the day. We certainly got our money's worth as we biked a total of 40km each in 30 degree heat to visit Jewel Cave and then followed the coastline to visit the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the most south-westerly point of Australia and where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. I foolishly paid $10 to go up the lighthouse, the tallest mainland lighthouse in Australia at 39 metres and 149 steps and whose light can be seen upto 47km out to sea. Although good exercise climbing all those steps, after cycling all that way I wish I'd saved my $10 for a beer as it wasn't worth the ... read more

21st December 2005 Perth * Morning visit to the Perth Mint. Witnessed a gold pouring session and had some souvenir coins made * Afternoon spent shopping @ Harbourtown (factory outlet priced shopping, but with goods targeted @ the below 30s) - many great buys there for me - I needed a full day at least to visit all the shops! * Headed for Lake Monger but only managed to see one black swan - where had they all disappeared to? Maybe we were in the wrong region of the huge lake * Sunset @ Cottesloe beach was breath taking. But the sun sets really fast! 22nd December 2005 Perth / Singapore * Returned car to Budget @ 0900 * Some last minute shopping done in Murray ... read more
