Was delayed for 3 hours at Santiago Airport, LAN airlines not communicating too well but I gu ess if you're flying 12 hours over the South Pacific skirting Antartica, with no land for 1000s of miles, you want you're plane right! Further delays at Auckland airport, but bumped onto a not much later flight at Sydney by Qantas then finally racked up in Perth and took a taxi to Britannia on William in Northbridge, a great place to get a souless but mercifully single room for cheap. A few days just recovering in Perth then joined a Western Exposure Tour taking in the highlights of the far South West corner of Australia. First stop was Busselton Jetty, adoringly picturesque, but closed. Gem of the day was Canal Rocks, not on the official agenda of any tour ... read more

Words are difficult to find to adequately describe the day we had today. Broughton organised for us to go out with some JD mates on the bay in their 40ft boat. Hard to knock back an invitation to fish, snorkel, see dolphins and seals and eat fresh abalone picked straight from the ocean and tossed on the BBQ all in the company of some extremely nice people. This was a day that will be a highlight from the whole trip. ... read more

Traveled from Albany though to Esperance on Friday - believe it or not, but it was 12 degrees when we stopped in Ravensthorpe. The roads are excellent in WA - wide, straight and have no potholes. The speed limit is 110 km/h so cars fairly motor along. The day was windy yesterday so we had a bit of a sway going with the van as we caught the gusts. Passed through lots and lots of wheat and canola. It all looks pretty good once you get near Esperance compared to other agricultural areas around Albany. The trees are all still stunted and scrubby and thick. Had to watch out for Malee Fowl crossing. Arrived in Esperance about 4pm and unpacked the van and annex. Wind has dropped so our fight with the flapping canvas and the ... read more

Esperance - Cape LeGrande - Albany - went to the Albany Pub, watching the cricket with live music playing in the back bar - 17year old blonde boy, playing guitar, foot drum, singing and with 3 digeridoos - "fingers". A crowd of females en force out to see this boy. The girls wear dryzabones, cowboy hats, riding boots, and are drinking rum. Thought I was in WA but it could be QLD!! ... read more

When we visited WA last, we went directly from Perth to Albany, back along the coast to Margaret River and then back to Perth. At the time, we were told it was worth the trip to Esperance but we thought 500 klm there and then 500klm back to Albany was too much for the short time we had to do it. That decided on us ‘going there next time’! Well the next time is now and we clearly see why we were told to visit those years ago. It is beautiful! But don’t misread what we say, as it is not so much a place to live as a place to visit. Our four night stay become one for a week to enjoy the area and take a time out. The coastline is well renowned but ... read more

Sunday 18th April, We got to Nundroo early afternoon and decided to keep on going, and ended up staying at the Nullabor roadhouse park. Met some people in a giant Unimog 4wd from Diggers Rest in Victoria who were travelling up the back roads to Alice Springs to do some prospecting. Interesting couple. Also met a couple travelling in a VW powered motor cycle/trike with a hot engine and big fat rear tyres. The noise from the generator kept Pam awake for most of the night, along with a dingo pack howling just after sunup, we woke up to a thick fog that didn’t lift for an hour or two. Monday 19th April, Travelling across the Nullabor was a bit disappointing as two or three of the viewing platforms were closed and the view from the ... read more

AN EXPERANCE EXPERIENCE The day dawned gray and misty but I prepared for a great sunny day anyway. The plan was to take a catamaran morning cruise around the islands of the Rechmerche Archipelago to see the seals, sea lions and birds. Then to Woody Island for morning tea, a bushwalk, lunch, snorkel and back to the ship at 4:00. I prepared with snorkel gear, towel, sunscreen and towel. What I needed was a jacket, umbrella and a warm sweater. It rained, no it poured on the way out to Woody. The water was choppy and some folks were a little green. Thank goodness I was fine. We saw some New Zealand Seal and Australian Sea Lions four times their size. Crested terns fished and we saw two magnificent birds, the White Bellied Sea Eagle and ... read more

Wednesday 24th March 2010 Woke up to a beautiful morning which was just as well seeing we had booked the half-day cruise to Woody Island and Judy’s stomach, in the past, had not enjoyed the ocean beyond what Rags calls a ripple. After saying our farewells to Ian & Jen we set off to the harbour where we boarded the Mackenzies Island Cruise boat at 0900. This cruise takes in the western beaches of Esperance before heading out to sea, stopping at several islands and rocks to point out the Cape Barron geese, white sea eagles, and NZ fur seals, before landing at Woody Island. Here, we were treated to a morning tea of chocolate cake and coffee and given the choice of a conducted tour to the high point of the island or free time ... read more

We managed to get away at about 0900 with the day's destination being Wave Rock, just out of Hyden. We travelled along the Brookton Highway, had a quick look around Brookton where we had lunch, reaching Hyden and Wave Rock at about 1500 hrs. It was warm and muggy there, but we were lucky to have a break in the clouds when we took photos of the Rock. Because it was still early, and the camp area there didn't look that inviting, we continued on our way stopping at Lake King caravan park at about 1700 hours. This park is run by the local shire, you sign yourself in, place the $20 in the box and find somewhere to park. There were only 3 other vans there and the facilities were spotless with a good supply ... read more
