Esperance Harbour
Wheat, iron ore and lead are the main exports, with urea and fuel being the main imports Wednesday 24th March 2010 Woke up to a beautiful morning which was just as well seeing we had booked the half-day cruise to Woody Island and Judy’s stomach, in the past, had not enjoyed the ocean beyond what Rags calls a ripple.
After saying our farewells to Ian & Jen we set off to the harbour where we boarded the Mackenzies Island Cruise boat at 0900. This cruise takes in the western beaches of Esperance before heading out to sea, stopping at several islands and rocks to point out the Cape Barron geese, white sea eagles, and NZ fur seals, before landing at Woody Island. Here, we were treated to a morning tea of chocolate cake and coffee and given the choice of a conducted tour to the high point of the island or free time to do what you want. We chose to walk to the high point by ourselves, giving us time to go for a dive in the cool water of the harbour. This was a highlight as the water was quite clear (and cold) with a diving trail laid out and many fish to be seen.
On our return to the mainland we both felt
Woody Island
The cruise boat docked at the jetty below where we had morning tea. that the trip was well worth while and recommended to anyone on their first visit.
The afternoon was spent relaxing as well as going into town for a little shopping including buying a new lens cap to replace the one lost from Rag’s camera.
Thursday 25th March 2010 An early start today, before 0600 as we have to go to work! We travelled the 100km to Cascades Primary School, arriving before anyone else on the staff. We were however, made very welcome by the Registrar, Annie, who arrived just after. She took us on a tour of the school and ensured we knew where everything was before our day there.
Judy spent the day providing Professional Learning to one of the staff whilst Rags looked after her Year 3-7 class. The 17 kids were a joy to have, none of whom ever had a male teacher before! The introduction of BlockCad (a computer version of Leggo) was a highlight for them, making the afternoon an enjoyable time for all.
Judy meanwhile, had a most productive day with the teacher, showing her how to integrate the curriculum with the technology the school has.
On reflecting on our day
Seal Island
One of the fur seals basking in the sun. whilst traveling the 100km back to the van,(a trip the Principal does every day) we felt we had both had a productive day in respect to staff and students, but also felt that 1 or 2 days in a school was enough. Maybe next year we’ll come this way and go to the other small schools in the area. From what we have been told, all would welcome our visit.
Friday 26th March 2010 A nice lazy start to to the day, Mum’s phonecall at 0800 getting us out of bed. The morning was spent catching up with the washing and preparing the van,car and selves for our departure tomorrow. Now carrying a couple of jerrycans of diesel to give us a better range - 75 litres is pathetic for a 4wd!
A cruise ship from the American Holland Line came into port overnight and the town is full of visitors. A pity the weather has turned as it is wet and fairly windy today.
Got a phonecall from our estate agent this afternoon telling us that our rental escaped damage in the storm they had on Tuesday and that they had a new tenant as

Judy admiring the view from the 1st April. All is well again.
Tonight we are meeting Marg & Glen for a meal at a local seafood restaurant on the oceanfront and we are looking forward to this. Next stop Ceduna (not really) for their oysters!
