Staying here at Esperance for a couple of nights after that little escapade in Salmon gum, well its lovely to see the sea after days on that nullabor, were right on the seafront, there's a pathway right up to the town centre and a pier where holidaymakers and locals go fishing, they catch mostly octopus/squid. the locals are freindly one told us of a seal wich lives beneath the pier called sammy so we went to look for him, yes we saw him and four frienly dolphins just swimmimg around in the shallow water next to the beach it was great to see them. Had a coffee in a cafe and met a cyclist from Wales,He gave his map of western Australia and told us about some nices places to visit. Albany - this is our next ... read more

We headed off for a weekend in Esperance - 4 hours from Kalgoorlie, on the south coast of Western Australia. It is such a picturesque little place. So here are some shots. The Southern Right Whales had started to come into the bays around here also, although we didn't spot any this weekend. There is a shot here also of me getting my eye back in on the pool table after years away from the game. Happy to say I am acing it now! My Dad would be proud! This photo was taken in a pub in Merredin (a small town on the Great Eastern Highway on the drive to Perth). I headed there for the weekend to meet up with Nicola and Mike (kiwis! - I knew Nicola - 'Pickle' from Massey Uni days, but ... read more

Jess said we could have a lay in as we did not need to be on the road to 9 so we had breakfast then she took us into the Cape le Grand National park where we stopped and had a swim and played beach cricket at Lucky bay, We then went and climbed Frenchmans peak which provided us with good views then we went to Hellfire beach for another swim and lunch. Jess then drove us into Esperance for a look around the town, then we were offered a choice of being dropped at the hostel or go and tour the northern part of Esperance, 2 people took the hostel choice and the rest of us went round the northern part stopping at various beaches, we then returned to the hostel and cooked up a ... read more

Today we lose 3 people who are returning to Perth as they are on the 3 day tour, we are also getting a new guide called Jess hopefully better then Julie as she is not that good a guide. We left our accommodation at 8am and drove to the top of Mt Clarence which gives us good views of Albany. we then drove through the Porongurup ranges. We then went to a Sandalwood factory which we all found boring and hence did not do the tour, this was thrown in as the Stirling ranges were closed due to bush fires. From the sandalwood factory we stopped at the best winery that we have stopped at and also had lunch. We then met the new guide Jess and said farewell to the 3 day people. We ten drove ... read more

As children, we visualized Australia as an exotic place on the opposite side of the world. Somehow it didn’t seem nearly as far away after a four hour plane flight from Bali! But 80 degree temperatures and decorated Christmas trees soon reminded us that we were quite a distance from the gale force winds hitting Seattle. The historic port of Fremantle, known to the locals as Freo, made an attractive and comfortable base for exploring the nearby city of Perth. Perth has been compared to Seattle in many travel guides, and we agreed they weren’t far off. With a compact downtown and several large waterfront parks, it’s a great place to explore on foot in good weather. Fremantle had plenty of its own attractions, including museums, a sprawling covered produce market and a harbor full of ... read more

To all you freezing pommes! We decided to have a holiday, as we have been having a stressful few days. We wanted to head south to see a bit more of Western Austrailia. We picked up a tour that would take us South West, to Esperance and Wave Rock. It was great to get on a tour that was all organised and we didn't have to think about what to eat and where to stay. (its a hard life travelling.) The first day was started with an early start leaving Perth, we jumped on the bus and met some really nice people- it was a good start! We headed out of Perth and started our LONG journey south stopping at Bunbury to see the dolphins (would we actually get to see any.) We stood on the ... read more

After 3 months in one place it's finally time to do some real travelling again. My driving foot is itching for some highway time and my face will implode if i have to look at another grape vine; two good signs that it's time to move on. I will surely miss Busselton though as I've had a great time and met tons of great people. The girlfriend is back in Japan for another 3 weeks so that gives me plenty of time before I have to be back in Perth to pick her up. The following is my journalesque blog of the road trip. Day One(sunday november the 26th): Busselton to Nannup, I woke up early, feeling just a little rotten after the farewell party on the weekend, and planned to leave by noon. Of course ... read more

Hey tous! *English version ... at the bottom page Comme certains d'entre vous le savent, Sandra et moi nous sommes separees pour la suite du voyage.

This is the tale of my trip to the SouthWest of Western Australia. I really didn't know what to expect out of the "organized" trips many of the tour companies offer. I was put off by the fact that you see heaps of places but you don't "really" see any one place. Since I Wouldn't see much of Western Australia without doing one of these tours I said what the hell... I choose a shorter 5 day trip south of Perth to Esperance, Albany, Pemberton and Margaret River. Booked it through Perth City YHA with a company called "Western Exposure". The first day was a bit dull, but that was because its 800 km's from Perth to Esperance. We split up the day with the town of "York" (not bad for a pit stop but it ... read more
