Cape Le Grand First stop for the day was Woolworth caltex in Kalgoorlie where fuelled up (101.2L @ 151.9c/L), then headed on our journey to the south western coast. Driving through Norseman the tin camels situated on a roundabout in town provided a rather interesting sight. Once arriving in Esperance we took in the sights down on the esplanade, and did a bit of shopping at the local fishing and dive store - getting some snorkelling gear and a hand spear for Lach to go spearfishing with. Cape Le Grand is an AMAZING national park, only $11 entry, and then $9per person per night. But as you can see from the pictures, our camp at Lucky Bay was well worth it! We had never seen crystal aquamarine blue waters or such white sand - that ... read more

Monday 4th April – happy birthday to Anna, our nephew Grant’s wife. We hope you had a lovely day. No doubt you’re busy preparing for your up-coming trip to the UK and Canada. We had a nice and relaxed start to the day, I made a few sandwiches, we loaded our swimming gear into the car (including wet-suits) and, with the sun blazing down from a clear blue sky, we set off on a trip along The Coastal Scenic Drive. It was a drive that fully endorsed why we remember Esperance so fondly from our time here 8 years ago. Last time it was a bit too much of a fleeting visit, but today we took our time visiting every scenic car park along the 20 kms outward stretch of the Coastal Drive. It started with ... read more

Saturday 2nd and yes, we were up early again. It was a beautiful morning even at 6am! We took our time packing up but were still on the road at 8am. Most of the others had already left by this time. Graham sympathized with our neighbour, Warwick, who he had spent time talking to last night. He was travelling in an old converted bus and had been “on the road” since 2002. They got talking because Graham had spotted the name Warwick on the back of the bus and assumed that Warwick was where he was from. It turned out that, at one time, there was another name as well – his wife’s – but they fell out in 2002 so he took her name off and he’s been travelling ever since. He was planning to ... read more

...was Quinton’s response when asked how he was enjoying life at Jinjinnup, and it is a sentiment that I think we all concur with (though probably not exactly in those words - his brothers had misinformed him about a kiddies’ TV character being described as "pink and happy"!!) We were very reluctant to leave Leonie and Ants, as it really was a most relaxing and enjoyable week. Quinn and their 5-year-old Ethan hit it off from day one and, amazingly, not one altercation was heard between them. Ethan’s younger brother Finn was a bit out of sorts for the first couple of days, having lost his previously dedicated playmate, but then William stepped in and played very nicely with Finn. Oliver and William also ‘rediscovered’ each other, and during the times William was preoccupied with Finn, ... read more

2nd Feb. As I write, I am listening to the reports of Cyclone Yasi, which is about to hit North Queensland, being upgraded to a STRONG category 5 with winds of 300km/hr or more. It’s unimaginable! Those poor people! They are just starting to get back to normal after Cyclone Larry some five years ago and here we go again. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to gamble with their lives and livelihoods by living in those areas, beautiful as they are? We’re now in a small town called Bremer Bay, about 180km east of Albany. We had a bit of a worrying time last weekend in Albany, when the weather people forecast that Cyclone Bianca would affect our location. Fortunately though, it fizzled out and we were ok. As a result of the ... read more

Up early this morning and One group was doing a longer harder hike and the other group was doing the Frenchman’s peak hike which although it was shorter was straight up a mountain. I decided to do the Frenchman’s peak hike. Surprisingly I was able to make it up the mountain. I just went slow and took my time. There is no set path up the mountain but there are markers to show you which way to go. It was not easy as some parts were really steep. After the hike we headed back to the campsite to wait for the others to get back. We had lunch and then headed off. We stopped in Esperance again and then we were off to a bush camp. Basically a bush camp has no facilities or anything. It ... read more

We cruised down to the seaside town of Esperance this morning. We got there just before lunch. It was nice and sunny but very windy there. We all explored the town and me and an english girl on the tour stopped for a drink by the ocean. Sooo nice! After we explored we all hopped back onto the bus and we drove out to Cape Le Grande National Park. Our camp was next to the most stunning beach I’ve ever seen. The whitest sand you will ever see and the water is the most amazing blue water. The sand is mostly silica so it’s soft and white and it squeaks when you walk on it. As we were setting up camp a small kangeroo came to check us out and look for food. While we aren’t ... read more

Extreme flooding in Central NSW meant that we had to choose the best route west in terms of floodwater. We had been checking the NSW RTA website for the past few days and plotted a course with no road closures. We were lucky. The water levels had started to drop and we travelled along the Midwestern highway without a problem. The only water on the road was at Grenfell and it was only about 600mm deep. As we drove through towns such as Bathurst, Cowra, Hay and Mildura, we realised that even though we have been on the road for nearly 8 months, there is still a huge amount of our great country that we are yet to see. There will be another trip (or 2). We arrived at Port Pirie after 2 days driving and ... read more
