Other than the camels of Cable Beach, we knew little of this coastal town. Oh, we remember cyclone warnings too, but knew little else. The drive from Karratha to Broome is through arid scrubby country, and only occasionally was land methodically farmed. Then you wind your way across town to the caravan park, proceed to your site and WOW - such a beautiful turquoise bay. (at high tide) Broome has a fantastic winter climate, so is very popular with those living in the colder southern areas of Australia for winter holidays. In fact, the caravan parks are bursting at the seams with retirees enjoying the warm days and mild nights, often staying for 3 or 4 months. Now, one of our team wanted a camel ride, two had previously had a camel ride, so the one ... read more

From Karratha, the journey is only a little north of east as we follow the coast past Port Hedland to Broome. What a truckie does in a day, we took a week camping by various rivers and or free camps. We must commend WA Main Roads for the excellent new toilets and dump points for travellers in the region. They leave other states in their dust, and the sites are quite rubbish free, probably because they are serviced weekly including emptying the many rubbish bins. So what do you see? This is the beginning of wild flower season, so we were able to enjoy the many colourful flowering shrubs along the way. The area has an interesting diversity of bird life, so again we had fun trying to get the perfect shot of the whistling kites ... read more

There are several caravan parks in Broome, and they are all full, as well as the Pistol Club, Church and the PCYC. Broome is packed out with tourists and caravanners like us, and I can see why. It’s a great place to be. We are at The Mangrove Hotel on the balcony and we have again met up with our fossickers! They have been down at Port Smith catching crabs, but the weather has been too windy to get out in the boat. We meet up out at the Port of Broome which has a huge wharf, and we all have a walk along this very high structure. A couple of boys are out there fishing, this jetty is so high, that if they get a big fish, they cannot get it up to the platform. ... read more

Broome – contd. After 2 days we moved onto Cable Beach CP which is in walking distance of the beach. We’ve spent days swimming at the beach where the water temperature is 25C and also at the pool. We’ve explored the local area of Cable Beach on our bikes and been up very early for sunrise and long walks along the beach. The camels are in action in the morning and at least 3 groups of them every evening. Many 4wd head off along the beach for sunset but have to be wary of the tides. Many of our evening drinks have happened beach front and at the sunset bar. We’ve also spent time in Broome exploring the town and the Port and other sights such as Gantheaume Point. We’ve learnt a bit of the history ... read more

Arrived in Broome we were here 3 yrs ago so not expecting much to have changed, well we are surprised the town is much quieter and cleaner, and has expanded with a few more shops and residential areas. We pick up our post at the post office courtesy of Marion thank you.A few bills and a parcel from Scotland thanks Mum.We are at a popular campsite close to a tavern that blasts out music every night but that's ok. We are only a sand hill from the famous Cable beach, which boasts at being among the top 5 in the world. Our intention is to wind down after the hype of the Falls and regroup before heading south toward Perth. Broome was once the Pearl center of the world and the history of that era is unbelievable, ... read more

Today we arrived in Broome. We drove to Broome via Derby so we could see the Boab Prison Tree at Derby. Jandamarra was kept in the Boab prison tree at Derby. In Broome we stayed in a cabin as I wasn't very well and I was vomiting. The next day we did lots and lots and lots of job. After all the jobs we had dinner, after dinner we went to bed. The next day was Mum's birthday. We moved to a camp pitch and put up the trailer tent. We went for lunch at Zanders at Cable Beach. Then we went back to the tent and Sarah and me went for a swim in the pool. Then we waited until it was dark and drove to Roebuck Bay to see the Staircase to the Moon. ... read more

We arrive in Broome, via Halls creek and Fitzroy Crossing. We check into the caravan park (across the road from Cable Beach), and I soon realize that every 2nd shirt on the cloths line is an XL pink polo, the grey nomads are here!. Broome is chock a block full of nomads, backpackers and families as its the WA school holidays, the place has a great vibe. We cram plenty in with a visit to a Pearl Farm, Camel Ride, view dinosaur footprints at low tide, go whale watching and toast a few sunsets and of-coarse some markets. We all go to the oldest operating open-air cinema one evening to watch not only the movie but also get our hair styled by Qanats jets screamingly metres above us on approach to the airport. I say to ... read more

Salut les touristes ! Broome !!

Geo: -17.9551, 122.241We left Derby early as we had 200+kms to drive and it was very pleasant. Broome is a stunning place to visit. The site we booked at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park was a seafront view overlooking the bay. Temperatures were a comfy 28 to 30 and not much breeze during the night. We had the car serviced there and it cost about $150+ more than home so everything costs so much more in peak season and not being locals. Anyway enough of that. We had the best seats for the steps to the moon but we were not great at taking pictures. We also visited the old china town which is now modernised and used by many varied businesses. We had a quick look in the pearl shops....aaargh $$$$$$$.We also visited the museum ... read more
