Those of you who are REALLY switched on will soon notice that this post comes quite some time after the last one! I think this year that I would like to get back in to this Travelblog thingo and I'm not working during the middle of this year as I have done since 2007. Therefore, I find myself having to get a few things done and having to get a lot of extra things done which come along at all sorts of different times. Basically, the main purpose of this post is just to remind myself of how the things such as the RSS feeds are. As a kind gesture, I share with you all some photos from the first half of this year which include a few from my trip up here and also in ... read more

Five fab days on the Dampier Peninsular. After two days in Broome we headed to Middle Lagoon for a night, then on to Kooljaman Resort (Cape Leveque) for four nights. Unfortunately our camper battery (number four in the last five years) died on us, so we had to turn the Waeco into an esky, but that kept the beer and wine cold, and that was all that mattered. Our stay included a flight over the Buccaneer Archipelago and Horizontal Falls, but because it was neap tides, the falls were not flowing.... read more

Split-arse journey from Onslow to Broome. Left Onslow at 5:40pm Monday (not far ahead of the sunset) and blasted through to Karratha where I had to stop and clean the bugs off the windscreen. Had intended to make it past Port Hedland (550km) before stopping, which would have put me about halfway to Broome, but the hoppers (kangaroos) and cattle were too thick both on and to the sides of the road. Pulled in after Yule River (about 40km short of Hedland) for the night at 11:40pm (after five hours at the wheel) and then pushed off again at 5:45am and drove the remaining 6.5 hours to Broome, arriving at 12:15pm. From about Pardoo onwards the south-easterly picked up and had reached about 30 knots by the time I got to Broome. (Sucked the fuel gauge ... read more

Broome more beach and pool, with a few odd jobs. Peter went off to Broome Auto Group to get the car serviced whilst the rest of us had a slow morning. Home work attended for a couple of hours, a play, at the play ground. Clothes washing and lunch on Peter returns (dropped of by service courtesy car) I walked the kids down to Cable Beach for a swim, high level of salinity making us float. (No stingers today thank heavens.). Whilst Peter added a new piece of plumbers tube to the van, for easy access tfor fishing rod and waited for car service to finish. Returning back to the Caravan park on foot we had another swim in the pool. Showers a rest and then car serviced we went for a drive along Cable Beach ... read more

Barn Hill to Broome. Packing up slowly, taking a walk down the beach. Tom puttinga hole in the camps waterline with a peg when packing up his Swag. The Caravan Park man even grumpier than when we first booked in. Leaving as soon as we could we departed for Broome. 133kms of the most dull scenery. Finally making it to civilisation just after midday we visited Cable Beach. Here we had the Belated Mothers Day Lunch at Zanders. A nice relaxing lunch glass of wine on Cable Beach. A short drive and we arrived at our destination, Cable Beach Caravan Park. Priced reasonably considering the facilities. Nicest Caravan Park this trip. Great Pool, Playground, clean and maintained camp kitchen and amenities blocks, After settling in dad and kids went for swim in the pool and mum ... read more

DAY 7. Broome was a miserly 220 km’s down the road so I headed off at 0940. On the way out of town I checked out the Boab Prison Tree it was very interesting and well worth the short time it takes to visit. As you enter Broome and drive past the airport on the right, straight ahead at the first roundabout is the Visitor Centre so that was my first stop. It was a well laid out and tidy VC with staff very helpful and knowledgeable and happy to give lots of advice. I’d heard a bit over the last couple of years about The Roebuck Hotel – The Roey. It sits smack bang amongst it in Chinatown the CBD and it sure did deliver, even at this quiet time of year. Thursday nights are ... read more

Friday 23rd October 2015 Most of the crew was up and about well before 0600hrs preparing the boat for departure. We passed through the lock at about 0600hrs and then spent the next couple of hours taking on fuel. The two boat tanks were filled to 3000 litres each, a bladder of 750 litres filled the deck area behind the main deck, and two bladders on the bow held over 700 litres. This should be sufficient to get us to Exmouth. Judy spent the morning doing whatever work she could before we left Darwin as there will be no wifi for at least a day or two. A farewell was said to Graeme again, as he arrived on the morning ferry on his way to work. Jan didn't come across as she doesn't work Fridays. After ... read more

We arrived in Broome just in time for a quick lunch and then we headed off to Gantheaume Point (a beach where people park on the beach and go boating, fishing and swimming). Our sunset (and whale watching) tour departed from here. This was the same tour that we had done in June but this time we expected to see some whales as it was now "official whale watching season". The operators were so confident of seeing whales that they offered a free trip if you did not see whales. Once again, we were taken out to Tradewinds by the sealegs tender (a boat with wheels) by the owner/captain, Cameron. On board we met Emma and Abbey. Almost as soon as we had left the mooring we saw whales further up Cable Beach with another whale ... read more

Back in Broome to catch up on domestic duties (does that include the travel blog). We had previously stayed at Town Caravan Park which is perfectly located on Roebuck Bay. They only had one very small site available this time so we tried Vacation Village on the way to the Port at Broome. It is the best caravan park in Broome. It is clean and tidy, has lovely staff and the atmosphere is one of pride and value for money. First thing Saturday morning we headed off to the market for breakfast. Tasty muesli followed by delish bacon, salad and egg sandwich. Whilst there Lenny booked us on a sunset cruise for the evening so it was back to the campground for lunch and change of clothes. The cruise started with a very wet ride to ... read more

We had met Jane and Jamie earlier at the Courthouse Market but had always planned to visit the Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) and do some tours. And so it was that we drove out Crab Creek Road and the 20 odd kilometres to the BBO. We had decided to stay a few days and as there was no power available in the campground, we decided to defrost and empty the fridge and transfer all of our food into one of the camp kitchen fridges. We would stay in one of their rooms. We arrived about lunch time and booked in for a bush and plains tour that afternoon with Nigel, one of the two wardens at BBO. The next few days were relaxing as we did a lakes tour with Rick and then a mangroves tour ... read more
