We had heard a lot about Broome and Cable Beach (and seen the photos) so we were prepared for something stunning when we arrived in Broome. Firstly, we went to Cable Beach where we had drinks at Zanders (a restaurant / bar with views of the beach) and then we walked around the area to see if it was the right sort of place for us. In the end, we weren't sure so we stayed at a caravan park in Cable Beach. The next day, the caravan park looked horribly cramped for space and Cable Beach looked like a lot of other nice beaches we had visited. So we moved to Roebuck Bay Caravan Park which was right on the water (and closer to Broome central). We checked out Green Mango cafe and performed quality control ... read more

Just a quick post today as we have a very big day planned for tomorrow and need to be ready to be picked up by 5.30am. So its early to bed for us! Today was a house keeping day for us today. washing, cleaning up the Bago, paying bills and catching up on paperwork. So let me tell you its not all froth and bubbles when you're on the road you know! Actually dealing with the constant film of red dust all over the Bago is a challenge. And the odd 'wait a while' prickle that lurks in the corner waiting to attack a bare foot when its least expected! Broome is known for the phenomena of the Staircase to the Moon. Its created by the rising of a full moon and its reflection off the ... read more

Another really hot day today but not complaining! First up Rob and I hopped on our bikes and rode to the beach. We had a beautiful swim in the warm Indian Ocean! Cable beach is breathtaking! The water is crystal clear too. We saw some bait fish jumping out of the water and Rob half joked that they were running from a shark. Later a lady at the info centre told us the beach had been closed yesterday because a tiger shark came in to the swimming area, chasing bait fish! OMG that was a bit too close for comfort! But glad we'd had the swim before we knew that or we wouldnt have gone in! Later we headed into Broome town on the bus. We wandered about looking at Streeters wharf (very historical site for ... read more

Well finally we have arrived at the Indian Ocean! We both have always wanted to see Broome so it's a big tick on the bucket list! It was a leisurely 220k drive here today so pretty easy. The sun was up nice and early and its pretty hot again! We headed off early enough because, to be honest, there's not much happening in Derby. The tide was out again, so not a drop of water in sight. The jetty goes for miles, can't imagine how you'd launch a boat! We did visit the Prison Boab tree on the way out though. Its massive, at least 1500 years old (still growing) and 14 metres around! It has a story that represents some of the 'not so good times' in Australia's history. It was used as a lockup ... read more

Get the map out & follow us! (as Dad would say) Finally, the morning of Friday 22nd August 2014 we left the comforts of Broome and cruised up the highway to the Fitzroy River for the first night on a journey that had been a long time coming. Sunrise the next morning we were on the road and set for what would be the first time driving on the Gibb River Road. Later in the day we reached Windjana, how good is this we were thinking to ourselves. To celebrate night 2 we broke out the brand new gas cooker before realizing I had purchased a brand new, empty gas bottle. Who sells those things anyway? So, sandwiches it was. We walked the 2km Tunnel Creek walking trail before making our way to Mt Hart Station ... read more

Hi travel followers. As mentioned last blog, we have now set up camp in Broome for a week so that we can check out what the area and the Kimberly has to offer before moving on yet again down the West Australian coastline. I must say, we had high expectations of the area and to date it has not let us down one little bit. First up we did the rounds of the city and the famous Cable Beach just to get familiar with the area. Just to make sure the Landcruiser didn't feel left out we took it for a drive along the 29 odd kilometres of Cable Beach including the "nudist" beach. (a bit disappointing as there wasn't much showing) but the beach itself was spectacular with it blue waters, white sands and red ... read more

Broome, the most north westerly town in Western Australia and the last frontier before embarking into the expanse of the Kimberley, is where one of the world’s great wildernesses meets the Indian Ocean. The town’s exotic pearling past has left a rich history and a unique multi-cultural mix of people. The town is surrounded by water, with the extremely popular Cable Beach to the west, and the pristine waters of Roebourne Bay to the east and south. It is also the gateway to the West Kimberley and the virtually unspoilt and untamed Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula. The amazing turquoise waters and the intensely coloured red earth are what draws visitors from around the world to this picturesque sleepy outback town, Broome. Whether you are a thrill seeker, adventurer, culture vulture, water lover or sun ... read more

After spending six nights in Exmouth, the road-trip was back on again in earnest as we hit the road to tackle the 1400km haul to Broome. With nothing particularly worth seeing and no towns to stop at along the way, Thursday (29thMay) not surprisingly turned out to be probably the most boring day of the trip so far. In fact it wasn't until about five o'clock in the afternoon – with Exmouth already 600km behind us - that we finally passed through our first and only town for the day, Roebourne. An hour or so later, with the last light of a spectacular sunset fading from view, we finally pulled into a free roadside rest area beside the Peawah River - where we were greeted by the sight of numerous cows roaming around amongst the dozen ... read more

Barn Hill Station is located 128km south of Broome, and is 9km off the Great Northern Highway. The camping area is on the cliff top overlooking the Indian Ocean. It seems a lot of people come here and prop for 2-3 months each year to escape the colder weather down south and it was pretty full when we joined the que to book in. The regulars even had vegies growing in pots!! They have a bowling green (although dad would say it needs a bit of work) they also bake bread and its really good even though it cost $6 a loaf, they also do a pretty good Vanilla slice. You can have a shower or sit on the loo and watch the stars at night, and don't worry about the gaps in the doors too ... read more
