This is how we ended our day!
Another really hot day today but not complaining! First up Rob and I hopped on our bikes and rode to the beach. We had a beautiful swim in the warm Indian Ocean! Cable beach is breathtaking! The water is crystal clear too. We saw some bait fish jumping out of the water and Rob half joked that they were running from a shark. Later a lady at the info centre told us the beach had been closed yesterday because a tiger shark came in to the swimming area, chasing bait fish! OMG that was a bit too close for comfort! But glad we'd had the swim before we knew that or we wouldnt have gone in!

Later we headed into Broome town on the bus. We wandered about looking at Streeters wharf (very historical site for pearling) Chinatown, (which used to be called Japtown, until the 2nd world war) and the many pearl shops and art galleries. Its an interesting place, pretty touristy but in an odd way. I got the sense that tourists might be seen as a pain by most people. The bus driver was whinging openly about tourists to a passenger even though there were mainly tourists

This is our girl Seta!
on the bus. Just a sense I got. But the information centre was totally opposite, overly friendly. No complaints, just a sense that we weren't always welcomed. Oh and the planes fly over the city VERY VERY closely. They are landing and you swear you could touch them! I've never been standing under a plane that close! It was scary but fantastic! I'm surprised I'd never heard about this before. If you come to Broome, be aware! Its awesome.

Back at the caravan park, we quickly jumped on the bikes and headed over to the beach for the sunset camel rides. It was a fantastic experience. Our camel was called SETA. she was a girl, 19 years old, so she only ventures out every 2nd day now. (average life span is 45). They were all laying down and we had to hop on in a particular way. As Rob hopped on Seta decided to stand up before I got on! And the noise she made was a tad scary! But they controlled her and she sat back down. When they stand you get really buffeted around but once up you just roll very gently. You ride along the beach

Rob gets to know Seta
for 2 k's then return. The sun is setting as you ride and of course the scenery is magnificent. Its incredibly popular site, dozens of 4wd's drive onto the beach to watch the camels and the sunset. One group even had a bbq and pizza oven with them!

Ha, funny story though, as were sauntered along we saw in the distance, a guy laying on a mattress thingy by his car and we suddenly realised he was buck naked, and looked like he was sound asleep! Weird! There were people everywhere too. Gave us all a good laugh anyway.

We took heaps of photos, some turned out better than others. It wasnt so easy with the rolling movement, and like most things we've seen, you really need to see it for yourself to appreciate it.

The company were very professional and the team told us heaps of information about the camels. They are mostly captured from central Australia. We were told there are aprox 700,000 wild camels in Australia and they are considered a pest here, though they are considered a delicacy in other countries as they are no longer wild, only farmed. They are treated very

well by the team, and you can tell they are very fond of them.

So thats day 55. We will have a relatively quiet day tomorrow, having a swim (ha, in the swimming pool I think!) getting some housekeeping things done before going to the stairway to the moon phenomenon tomorrow night. Stay warm!

Would so love to be there with you
Hi Lynn and Rob, you are certainly whetting our appetite to do the round trip of Australia. I can't believe the miles you are covering. It will be very different in NZ when you come over as distances of 2 hours driving or less get you to somewhere new. I keep saying to Brian, you have to read today's blog, it's really interesting. He knew all about the prison and is keen as still to do a swap. Have fun and enjoy, miss you on Mojo site but I think we are all reading about your travels....Hugs....Karen
