Days on the Road = 63 Days (9 Weeks) The Shinju Matsuri Festival continues today with a Dragon Boat Race down at Town Beach so that's where we're heading to this morning. First stop though we are taking Trevor to the famous Cable Beach. Cable Beach actually derived its name from the telegraph cable that was installed between Broome and Java in 1889. It is just beautiful and provides a safe manned spot for swimmers to enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. FACT FILE ~ Cable Beach is Australia's only beach rated in the World's Top 5 Off to another beach in Broome "Town Beach" to watch the Dragon Boat Race which is a first and it was certainly interesting watching all the local teams compete. This beach is unmanned so you are swimming ... read more

Days on the Road = 62 Days (8 Weeks 6 Days) Today is a big day, firstly my cousin (Trevor) who I haven't seen in well over ten years is flying in for a brief overnight visit and Broome's Shinju Matsuri "Festival of the Pearl" starts today with a street carnival in the evening, but first of all to get the schooling done..... Okay schoolwork done for the week, I have the weekend off yeh time to have some fun. Now to head to the airport to pick up my cousin. Broome International Airport is located in the heart of Broome so it's amazing to watch the planes come into land as you can get really close to the runway, probably not very good on the eardrums but that’s what fingers were made for. Now to ... read more

Days on the Road = 61 Days (8 Weeks & 5 Days)Distance Travelled (Town to Town) = 3,770km The Dental Visit Over the past week my eldest daughter has been complaining about a sore back tooth and gum and on investigation it appears that she may have lost one of her fillings, okay time for a visit to the dentist, but which one??? Back home the girls went to the dentist through the school which was free, so what to do when we are on the road, private, government dental centre or through the distance education school they are enrolled in. After many phone calls and investigation by their school it appears that they can actually go through the local primary school's dentist clinic in Broome which was Broome Primary School. Great! So for anyone travelling ... read more

Tuesday Night 31stJuly I had been waiting all day for dad to finish working on the bus. When we had finished dinner I went to the bus to go to bed. Before we left mum came in and gave us kisses and hugs. Dad just had to finish a few things then we could go. Finally at midnight we went. When I woke up in the middle of the night we had just arrived somewhere. Now I could really get to sleep. . Wednesday 1st August It was cold and misty in Bridgetown when we woke up. We drove off to an old settlers hut at Hester Brook and had breakfast. We found an ancient orange tree and collected about thirty even though they were a bit sour. After we drove off to my nanna Nornies ... read more

Days on the Road = 58 Days (8 Weeks and 2 Days) After a wonderful farewell from our neighbours we hit the road from Eighty Mile Beach to Broome it's a long day ahead of us but we're really excited to move onto our next destination and have a nice lengthy stay of four weeks. Again, we've heard mixed reviews about Broome but we're going with our own eyes so we have no expectations except for lovely warm weather! There's not much to look at along the way just bush after bush. The temperature is starting to rise as we head further up north and the car thermometer is recording 38oC outside, nice. I can see lots of swimming being done in Broome. After quite a few hours on the road and feeling rather tired, we ... read more

Day 33 – Wednesday August 1st – Broome A couple of weeks ago we had booked the Prado in for its 10,000km service at Broome Toyota for 7.30am on 1st August. That meant getting up at 6am, leaving the tent at Quondong and driving into Broome very early. Once Mark had dropped the car off at Toyota we had several hours to explore Broome by foot. The first hour or so it was pretty chilly until the sun warmed up. We got ourselves a coffee in a local café and then went for the budget/bogan breakfast option of bacon and egg McMuffins/ hot cakes. We read about the history of Broome from the plaques along Johnny Chi Lane and visited the old pearl lugggers, bought some postcards, wrote the postcards, did some window shopping ... read more

Day 32 – Tuesday July 31st – Quondong Beach As we were sitting next to the tent, facing the ocean and reading our books having a lazy morning, a bloke came up from the beach and told us that there were whales swimming along. We grabbed the binoculars and ran onto the sand. Half way to the horizon we could see several small groups of whales in the sea, swimming North. They were blowing water, breeching and slapping their flippers on the water making a huge banging noise. We watched them for about an hour then decided to go fishing. We followed a man on the beach with his rod and joined him at his fishing spot, hoping to get some advice from him about how to rig to the rod and where to ... read more

Day 31 – Monday 30th July – Derby to Quondong via Broome Even the kids made use of the brand new shower block at the caravan park this morning but once we had packed up the tent again we had managed to get ourselves a light dusting of red dirt as usual, from the cover of the trailer. We camped next to a German family who work for the WHO in Laos and were on holiday in Oz. They were making the most of the proximity to Australia for a holiday before their new posting to Uzbekistan in December. Glad it’s not us having to go and work there! We treated ourselves to cakes from the local bakery for breakfast before we hit the road to Broome. It is very comfortable to be driving ... read more
