Hazel Western

Muppetsontour are Mark, Hazel, Anna and Luke. We are seizing the great Aussie opportunity of "long service leave" and travelling around the Western half of Australia for 9 weeks during July and August 2012. Anna (11) and Luke (turning 10 on the second day of the trip - won't that be a fun day in the car....) are looking forward to "wagging school" and Mark and Hazel can't wait to experience outback Australia, the Top End, Kimberley, Broome, the WA coast. Starting from Melbourne, we hitch up the camper trailer on June 30th for our big adventure. Very happy to have you guys tagging along!

Day 63 – Friday 31st August – Mount Crawford Forest near Williamstown, Barossa Valley to home! I felt a bit sad as we packed up all our gear this morning for the last time on our trip. The almost daily putting up and packing away of the tent and other equipment has become a happy little routine and really not a chore. It seems strange that tomorrow we will be back into our “old” life again, doing all the things that busy families do. The sat nav reckons it’s 744kms to get from the campsite back home. On the road at 8.15 we drove through the country roads through more of the Barossa Valley to get to Murray Bridge (last fuel stop of the trip) then Tailem Bend and finally Bordertown before reaching Victoria. ... read more

Day 62 – Thursday 30th August - Minnipa to Barossa Valley Once again we have been lucky with the weather and it stayed dry last night. The temperature was 8 degrees this morning but without the sun it felt much cooler than it had done at Karijini. We sent Luke for a quick walk up the Tcharkuldu Rock on behalf of the rest of us as we packed up the tent, eager to get on our way and eat into the kilometres on our journey home. We have been amused by the road safety posters in South Australia, aimed at a definitely male target group – “Don’t drive like a red button”; “Don’t drive like a rooster”; “Don’t drive like an anchor” (with a w in front of it). See if you can work ... read more

Day 61 – Wednesday 29th August - Moodini Bluff (WA) to Tcharkuldu Rock, Minnipa (SA) The weird thing I forgot to mention yesterday is that there is a 45 minute time difference when you pass into Caiguna from the West. Officially there is a 1.5 hour time difference between South and Western Australia but this little time zone took us by surprise. The 45 minute time advance didn’t mean that much to us as we don’t have to go to work tomorrow or catch a plane but it was unexpected. At 7am, or maybe it was 7.45am, there was little action in the rest area as the grey nomads seemed to be having a lie in. After a quick breakfast we packed away and hit the road at what might have been 8.15am, but ... read more

Day 60 – Tuesday 28th August – Lucky Bay to Moodini Bluff rest area (26km E of Madura) Last night’s rain luckily didn’t amount to much and the tent wasn’t very wet when we woke up this morning. Mark and I went for a walk along the beach while the kids had a lie-in. Luke has a cough and has been feeling under the weather so a bit of extra sleep will do him good. The sand on the beach was indeed white, but without the light of the sun and wet from rain and high tide it had a dull, almost dirty appearance. And because it was a cold morning we couldn’t feel the sand squeaking between our bare toes through our hiking shoes and uggs. Next time we will come here when ... read more

Day 59 – Monday 27th August – Boondi Rock to Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park It was another sunny, blue sky morning as we departed our little campsite. We spent about 15 minutes clearing the fly thingies out of all the nooks and crannies in the tent and the kilos of flies that committed suicide in the trailer sink. Yuk. On the road again we made a very brief stop at Calgardie, once the third most important town in Western Australia in the time of the gold rush in the late 1800’s. Unfortunately we don’t have the time to explore the Goldfields Historical trail so will have to come back here. 40kms further on is Kalgoorlie-Boulder, home of the world’s largest open cut gold mine. Around Kalgoorlie there used to be lots ... read more

Day 58 – Sunday 26th August – Perth to Boondi Rock in Goldfields National Park (40km W of Calgardie) It had been another cool night and the tent was damp with dew outside and condensation inside, so we left the tent to dry out while we went to pick up Luke and watch Rory play in his under 10 footy match. We left the oval at around 10.30 after having said our farewells to the Dawsons. We needed to get fuel and some shopping before we left so drove to the local shopping centre. Coincidentally today is the first day of legal Sunday trading in WA so there was nothing standing in our way to get what we needed - apart from the supermarket not opening until 11am. Back at the caravan park the ... read more

Day 57 – Saturday 25th August – Perth Karrinyup Caravan park in the northern suburbs of Perth had been identified as the best located park for us to camp in the city tonight as it was the closest to Rory’s house in Wembley. We had arranged to go to Rory’s at 4pm so had several hours to explore Perth. It is Mark’s and the kids’ first time here. The caravan park let us set up the tent at 10.30am so we wouldn’t have to pull the trailer all round Perth and struggle for parking. It was a beautiful winter’s morning in Perth and our first stop was Scarborough beach for a bit of a walk and a coffee. Shorts and t-shirt weather and glorious blue skies. The suburb was bursting with life – people ... read more

Day 56 – Friday 24th August – Cliff Head to Yanchep National Park (50kms north of Perth) Nearing Perth, Luke is getting more excited by the hour about seeing his buddy Rory again. It’s very cute but slightly annoying as he is counting down the minutes until tomorrow afternoon! First stop today is Jurien Bay, a sleepy seaside town on the Indian Ocean Drive. We couldn’t find a coffee shop here so we drove on Cervantes, planning on calling in to see Kit from Ningaloo Station beach in his hardware store. Cervantes isn’t much bigger than Jurien Bay, having a general store, surf shack and take away store as its three main shops in the town, plus a coffee shop next to the caravan park and a crayfish business that offers tours of its ... read more

Day 55 – Thursday 23rd August – Kalbarri to Cliff Head (100kms south of Geraldton) Even though we don’t like staying in caravan parks because everyone is on top of each other and they are usually so crowded, we must admit it is convenient to have a camp kitchen with mod cons such as kettles, toasters, sinks and running hot water! We had gallons of tea and piles of toast for breakfast and a takeaway coffee from the café round the corner. I forgot to mention the excellent shower we had last night in the brand new shower block at the campsite. We have definitely established that having a shower every day is a luxury and not a necessity but it is nice to feel squeaky clean every now and again and have freshly ... read more

Day 54 – Wednesday 22nd August – Francois Peron National Park to Kalbarri It was blowy and trying hard to rain when we woke up this morning at 6.30. But as soon as we ventured out of the tent we could see that it would brighten up and indeed the dew/rain on the tent had dried out by the time we packed up at 8am. Driving back along the sandy track one of the warning lights came on in the car (traction control). It’s one of the lights that mean you have to get your car checked by a Toyota dealer ASAP. Hmmm. We didn’t feel it would be dangerous to drive another few hundred kms to the nearest dealer in Geraldton, so we booked an appointment with the service department for tomorrow afternoon. ... read more
