We decided we could spend the rest of the weekend bush camping on the Broome Peninsula, so that we could get some information on Saturday (when some things were open) and be ready to hopefully get everything we needed done by Tuesday so we could get into the Kimberley and onto the Gibb River Road, the rough 4x4 road traversing the red earth of the Kimberleys for over 400 km, with endless gorges, homesteads and station stays dotting the route, along with cliffs, natural pools and endless boab trees. It was one of the reasons we got the Land Cruiser in the first place, and our consolation prize for not being able to go proper outbacking. As we drove through Broome and up the coast on the unsealed road and got off into the sand tracks ... read more

23rd to 29th November 2012. Vacated Cable Beach Caravan Park by 10am and we were looking forward to checking into our resort, The Oaks. Check in time was 3pm and we used this time for a bit of sight seeing. We visited Gantheaume Point, home to a lighthouse and Anastasia's pool, which was built by the lighthouse keeper for his wife. The most important feature of this spot is the dinosaur footprints. Next, we headed to the port and then into town for lunch. We had Subway and did a bit of window shopping in Chinatown. There wasn't much to do in the Broome township itself, so we went to have a look at Roebuck Bay. Another site for beautiful sceneries and Broome is truly a nice place to visit. Broome is the halfway point to ... read more

22nd November, 2012. We arrived at Broome a day early due to our uneventful journey through the Kimberley. We decided to spend the day relaxing by the pool at Cable Beach Caravan Park. We went for a walk to the beach, which was an amazing view. The water was clear and blue as far as the eye could see. Unfortunately, we couldn't swim due to stingers and there were no life guards on duty.... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Admin/Blog/gmap-entry.php?map_id=60524 A white tyre indicated the entrance and a red track, mildly corrugated, lead the way to a treasure of a stay. Barn Hill Station stay was located within the bounds of a working cattle station. It was characterised by red cliffs, a white sandy beach, shady trees, lots of very friendly birds and open air ablution blocks. While there were only a handful of people it was not hard to imagine 200+ vans and their occupants seeking refuge at this site in peak season. We had planned on only staying for one night but just had to stay for two. There was something about the place that made you feel at home. One couple had plans to stay until September 2014! We walked the beach, explored the beach and tried our hand at fishing. The ... read more

Three days in a water front site at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park afforded us beautiful views of a flat azure sea with a sandy beach, though no good for swimming; mangroves that popped up and were submerged, depending on the tide; long walks out to wrecks revealed at low tide and the opportunity to do some of those much needed repairs. Broome was an interesting place with many long term stayers in the caravan parks. Older suburbs were often overgrown and rather trashy looking. There were many new suburbs full of stunning innovative homes and apartments mostly built from corrugated iron. The roofs had no gutters. Finding places was not easy as even the latest updates on our GPSs didn’t have all the roads or modifications that have been made to accommodate the most recent ... read more

Days on the Road = 82 Days (11 Weeks & 5 Days) 16th September 2012 Today we caught up with one of Charles' old work colleagues, Rob for a drink at the Mangrove Hotel and then we stayed on for a bite to eat where I enjoyed a lovely plate of fresh prawns and even better they were half price. Yum. The hotel was located very close to the mangroves, hence the name, so we didn't stay too long as we didn't want to be eaten alive by the midges. It was a lovely day and the hotel offered a fantastic view which should be fully appreciated at high tide! 17th September 2012 The girls have been real troopers when it comes to doing their schooling and have been progressing really well and generally after a ... read more

Days on the Road = 75 Days (10 Weeks & 5 Days) We've had a massive day on the road full of adventure. Our first destination was our tour booked out at Willie Creek Pearl Farm, then onto Beagle Bay and finally to Cape Leveque. Willie Creek Pearl Farm Willie Creek Pearl Farm is located out of Broome town and takes us down the road that leads to Cape Leveque, however, prior to hitting the sandy road we turn left and head into the farm across the salt flats. Approaching the farm we notice the crocodile signs where it warns us that there is to be no swimming in the creek, it's amazing we're not too far from Broome and already we're seeing the croc signs! The water is crystal clear and aqua in colour just ... read more

Days on the Road = 71 Days (10 Weeks & 1 Day) Sunday 2nd September 2012 Today is another celebration of the Shinju Matsuri Festival with a street parade followed by a concert. The street parade was held in the latter half of the afternoon where many people lined the streets coming into Chinatown and we waited for the arrival of the floats which are in celebration of multiculturalism, organisations and entertainers in Broome. The Carnival of Nations and Float Parade is an opportunity to encourage tolerance, understanding and mutual respect between locals, new arrivals and the ethnic and cultural communities in Broome. It reminded me of the Christmas Pageant in Perth, minus Santa of course but none the less it was very entertaining and we saw many different designs of floats, colours, dancing, Elvis (ahubbahubba) ... read more
