This was our first trip to Australia and we decided to visit Kangaroo Island firs, which was the highlight of my trip. We saw a sign for Koala walks at Hanson Bay wildlife Sanctuary. They do Koala walks and nocturnal Koala walks. I hate going to zoos and would rather see animals in their own habitat. We booked a noctural Koala walk the last night we were there. My husband was not keen on the idea but ended up loving it. The couple that manage the Scanctuary were so knowledgeable and it was obvious how much they loved their work. Went on a stroll with several other people as James pointed out different kangaroo's, described plants and talked about the great work they do there. You can stay at Hanson Bay as well as they have ... read more

Welcome to South Australia! (a new Australian state for the travel blog) The last leg of our visit by the Harpers was a spectacular finale and finished off the coast of Adelaide on Kangaroo Island. This relatively unspoilt terrain (about a third of the island is national parklands) is Australia's third largest island and is full of wildlife and impressive land formations and views. Although the island can be reached by ferry, we decided that we would have more time to spend exploring the island if we flew there and the airplane ride from Adelaide turned into an experience in itself (with 12 seats and Matt in the co-pilot position) and gave a great overview of the island as we flew into Kingscote. We rented a 4-wheel drive vehicle as soon as we landed and headed ... read more

Kangaroo Island. Perfect for some chilled out time, getting to one with nature and taking in the magnificant scenery and wildlife. So, we booked a trip that included 2 nights in the island's YHA hostel and a tour. Having been told that we could spot penguins come in from the sea when it gets dark, off we went to Hog Bay, holed up on the beach and waited with bated breath for the little darlings to appear. Now, those of you reading this that know me also know that my eyesight is not what you would call 20-20. And not to disrespect my fellow travellers Bloomy and Simmo, even with their contact lenses in, they were also struggling to see. So we sat and waited, then sat and waited some more, each of us certain that ... read more

6:15am Dec 22-7:30pm Dec 24 i spend with an amazing group of backapackers on Kangaroo Island. We were on a 3day/2night tour with Groovy Grape Getaways and we had an absolute blast doing EVERYTHING there is to do on KI. I rode in the front seat of the van with an Swiss girl (Michelle) and our aussie "tour guide/friend" (Lawrence). The three of us danced and sang to music for the whole road trip over there and on the island. Our group had 1 japanese, 2 italians, 3 isreales, 1 french, 1 austrian, 1 swiss, 2 english and me the canadian. Day one was grocery shopping, a Eucalyptus distillery, a Marron farm with wine tasting, setting up camp at "the cottage", watching all the Kangaroos on our property (i got a great video of 2 kangaroos ... read more

Kangaroo Island, Victor Harbor November 3, 2008 Joe pulled me out of bed at six so we could climb on the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase NP on Kangaroo Island. We were so early that we were the only ones there the entire two hours, a good idea since as we were leaving we met a tour bus. The Remarkable Rocks were….well, remarkable! We marveled at their existence. It was cool and somewhat cloudy, but no rain as was predicted. A few miles from the rocks in Flinders Chase was a nice boardwalk down to the ocean to Admirals Arch where there were dozens of New Zealand Fur Seals. Most of them were fighting, looked like it could have been mating season. We wanted to stay in both of these places longer but had to make ... read more

Kangaroo Island November 2, 2008 Using multiple alarms again, we were able to get up at 5 and drive two hours south of Adelaide through lovely country to Cape Jervis (still in South Australia) and put us and the rental car on a ferry to Kangaroo Island. Because this island is isolated from the mainland it has been spared the impact of European settlers bringing in exotic plants and animals. There is a lot of old growth vegetation and animal and bird populations have thrived. (Can you tell I plagiarized the last two sentences from a handout we got at the information center?) We wanted to see this place that is hyped up by all the travel sites and guidebooks. We met the coolest couple on the ferry and ended up swapping e-mail addresses. They are ... read more

So, Tuesday was a LONG day. Up at 5:00 am (and everyone knows how much I love mornings) to leave at 6:15. Only 1/2 of our group went to the island, the rest spent the day in town. Bus ride to the ferry at Cape Jervis was about an hour and a half, then a 45 minute ferry ride to Kangaroo Island. Much better ferry ride then the one to Green Island. This boat was quite a bit bigger and more steady. We got a box breakfast from the hotel since we left before they started serving. It was pretty nice, yogurt, boiled egg, fruit, juice and a roll). The rest of our folks were flying back from the Island, so we ended up on different busses and only saw them at lunch. We started with ... read more

So, sorry I have been slacking! So I have been really busy doing a lot of great things! Jenna, Emily and I took a day trip to the Blue Mountains and it was SO beatifu! I haven't hiked since I was like in girl scouts so it was really hard at first, but it was an amazing trip. Also, the tour guide introduced us to some great Australian hip hop so for a good time download: The Hilltop Hoods Nosebleed Section It's great! Also download The Potbelleez Don't Hold Back. It's a really good dance song. So that was an added bonus. Make sure to check out the pics and I will try to put one or two on here! So, I went to Adelaide on Wednesday to visit and to go to Kangaroo Island. Adelaide ... read more

Located 13 kilometers west of the Fleurieu and south of the Yorke peninsulas in South Australia, Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. Its it approximately 155kms long and 55kms wide with a total area of about 4350 square kilometers. It population is 4350 people, 500,000 wallabies, 15,000 kangaroos and 25,000 koalas. Also amongst the inhabitants are echidnas, platypuses, sea lions, seals and dozens of bird species. Though I have lived many years in Adelaide, I have never visited. Now aboard a ferry boarded at Cape Jervis, on the tip of the Fluerieu Peninsula, I am hoping to meet a few of its citizens. Landing at Penneshaw late in the afternoon I decide to drive to the town of American River for my first night on the island. A small community ... read more

Kangaroo Island South Australia, 2008. It is a while since I’ve “blogged”, as we’ve not been travelling much! Work unfortunately gets in the way of travel! But we’re just back from Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It is a stunning place. “KI” (as the locals call it), is Australia’s third biggest island after Tasmania and Melville NT. Although it has over 500 kilometres of coastline and is approximately the area of Bali, Indonesia, its permanent population is only about four thousand souls. Quite a contrast. To quote the South Australian Tourist Office: “No wonder the UK Sunday Telegraph called Kangaroo Island ‘one of earth’s last unspoilt refuges’”. It is. Kangaroo Island is an intriguing place. It is geologically ancient and special. Being isolated from the rest of Australia for ten to fifteen thousand years, since the end ... read more
