On Thursday morning I got up at 5:45 am and I'm not going to lie, I had a bit of a wine induced hangover. I had to move quickly though to get my bags over to the storage area and get ready for my next trip. Today I was headed out with the Groovy Grape folks again, this time for a 2 day, 1 night tour of Kangaroo Island. I had read an article in Budget Travel mag years ago called, the 10 best islands you've never heard of and Kangaroo Island was on the list. I tore out the page and saved it until now. As it turns out, plenty of people have heard about this island, but that does nothing to diminish its reputation. I was super excited to be seeing part it! I ... read more

Somehow, I managed to wake up an hour before everyone else so I was showered and ready to go before anyone else stirred so I went for a walk. Where did the kangaroos go? To wherever it is they go to sleep during the day I guess. I returned to find Dave making banana pancakes - seriously, amazing! So after filling up on breakfast it was almost time to leave but first it was washing up time so I took off my ring and placed it on the side and myself and little Swedish Emma washed up. Must remember to put that back on. Today we were scheduled to take a little four km hike to the beach. Unfortunately however, when we stopped and hopped out of the bus, I walked around to retrieve my sunscreen ... read more

Picked up nice and early at 6.05am (after buying my water from a guy who was convinced that I'm German) and we made our way to the ferry via a bakery in a random Australian Village. Pretty soon, we had set foot on Kangaroo Island and my first thought was 'wow, it's cold.' Not cold like at home but still pretty chilly for Oz! We drove a little way and began our day with a hike up Prospect Hill. Just 500 steps up and you could pretty much see Kangaroo Island in its entirety with mainland Australia just about visible in the background. Driving along, we stopped to visit a couple of those pristine beaches that Kangaroo Island is famous for and then, just as the rain set in, we arrived at Seal Bay. Thankfully, Dave, ... read more

Politiet kom hurtig og fik styr paa ... read more

Hello Mates - Best wishes from Melbourne :) Wie gehts wie stehts?

So.... Stupidly early on Thursday morning we were picked up from our hostel by Tony (who looks like your steroetypical Aussie surfer bloke!) together with 11 other explorers & we headed off to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry over to KI. Once over there we stopped briefly for supplies (chocolate & ginger beer) before heading to Pennington bay for a brief walk on the beach & a scramble up the rocks. Some even got their feet wet, albeit accidentally! This was the beach Flinders landed on thinking it was mainlamd Australia & the Island is named after the creature that saved his crew from starvation! We next climbed up Prospect Hill (where Flinders found out he wasn't on the mainland) - over 500 steps to the top, there were a lot of red faces at ... read more

Kangaroo Island is the perfect place to be when your interested in the native wildlife of australia because Kangaroo Island is a true wildlife sanctuary. This is because of its isolation from the mainland so that the native vegetation suffered less from the impact of European settlement. The wildlife that your are more likely to see when visiting this Island are kangaroos, koala's, wallaby's, possums, enchidnas, penguins sea lions and more when your lucky. In februari i got my oppertunity to visit Kangaroo Island and did that through a booking with Surf and Sun. This is an adventurous tour operator in South Australia who offers the best possible trip to Kangaroo island in my opinion. It has a good mixture of adventurous and fun activities and wildlife viewing. See as much as you can in a ... read more

Today was a special day indeed, it was F’s birthday! Not just any old birthday but his 13th. Throughout the trip Mrs G and I had been chatting about how we hoped that F didn’t do a Kevin and Perry routine and turn into a rotten teenager at the stroke of Midnight. For those that have never heard of Kevin and Perry, they were a sketch from a TV programme called Harry Enfield and Friends. The first sketch of Kevin is of him with his parents just before his 13th birthday, and he is meant to be a lovely 12yr old, BUT once he turns 13 he becomes a horrid, grunting smelly teenager. It is really funny, and I would highly recommend that you all go to You Tube and find the clip. To spare you ... read more

Remember how yesterday I said that we didn’t normally join big tour groups as we liked to do things at our own pace and we could be as late as we liked? Well today was no exception to that rule. We had a full day tour of the Island planned for the day. Originally we were meant to start at 9:30. Any guesses to the time we actually started? 10am? Nope. 10:30? Nope. 11am? Yes. We kept our guide waiting for almost 2hrs. It meant we couldn’t do all the things that had been originally planned for us, but hey never mind, we still had a great day. Our guide for the day was called Mary. She was nice, very blunt and very orange. Maybe it is because we beat them in the Ashes again (for ... read more

Do you ever have days when it is really hard to get up? I am not talking about that normal ‘I don’t want to get up feeling’, but actually being unable to get up because your body is so shattered you physically can't get up? Well I had that feeling when the alarm went off. I fell asleep so quickly last night and so deeply that when my alarm went off I really couldn’t get up. For the 1st time on the job I hit the snooze button and went straight back into a deep sleep. When my alarm went off at 7:30 I only actually got out of bed because Mrs G came into the room with the news that we only had 90 mins before our group tour left! There is nothing like your ... read more
