We had a lovely handful of days on Kangaroo Island, staying in a little house with a loft, beautiful views, delicious food and wine and an abundance of wildlife- although we didnt see any live kangaroos until the last day!... read more

We have just returned from a 3 day / 2 night self drive trip around Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is about 3 hours from Adelaide (by bus and ferry) and as the name suggests has lots of wildlife - mainly Kangaroos but there are also sea-lions, koalas, wallabies, penguins and pelicans. We started our trip on the island by picking up our car from Budget. We were served by a lady we later knicknamed 'Budget Bitch'. She was very unhelpful, patrionising and bascially acted like she didn't want us to rent a car from her!! Fair enough we didn't actually realise how bad the roads were going to be and had only hired a Hyundia Getz but she must have thought we were idiots as she kept saying we couldn't drive on the beach or unsealed ... read more

DAY 143 It was 3.30 in the morning, Andy and I were in the wide awake club, we are not really sure what woke us both up to make us so alert, except that we were quite warm in the tent, so for the first time in ages we had to open the inner panels on the windows to let some of the breeze flow through. It had been terribly windy when we went to bed and the wind was cold, but thankfully the wind had died down. We struggled for a while to get back to sleep, but we did and soon we awoke shortly after 7.00 when the day was breaking and we could hear the sound of the other campers next to us moving around. Today we leave Kangaroo Island to get back ... read more

DAY 142 We woke up fortunately where we went to bed last night at American River Camp site (Camps 5 Ref 416 page 278) the fee was supposed to be $15.00 bucks yea right. We would have been happy to contribute our dosh if they would have provided the services for our money such as a hot shower and a flushing toilet, or even water out of the tap would have been nice, but no that was obviously to much to ask so we didn’t let them keep our monies. The site itself was nothing special; just on the edge of the river but at least you could see the Pelicans and Black Swans this morning. I reminisce of the time that we were in a campsite opposite a river in MacLean, we wandered by chance ... read more

DAY 141 We woke up to a very warm morning, and the sun was blazing in as it came over the top of the mountain, it had been a very cold night and we had also been reluctant to get out of our sleeping bags, (still singles which allows less air to flow freely so we can keep warmer) when we finally did get up it was around 9.00am, we can’t believe we are sleeping for so long. The visitor of the furry kind that we had the night before, left muddy paw prints on our chairs, table and the lid of the gas stove, most definitely these are Possum prints. The ones here are not as brave as the ones on Cradle Mountain, but they are still smart and still know where they can find ... read more

DAY 140 Jesus it was a cold night, but as the day had been so hot it was a worthy trade off, we slept soundly in our beds, whilst the wildlife went about its business in its own sweet way. We can't believe we have been away 20 weeks today and it has gone in a blink of an eye. A lady told me that two Possums were fighting last night, and one of them fell out of the tree with a hell of a thump. We found loads of fur just by the trailer this morning but it all must have happened before we went to bed as we never heard a thing and everyone was tucked away in their caravans before we went to bed. I must just say one funny thing about caravan ... read more

DAY 139 The nights are definitely getting warmer, it feels great after being so cold at night and struggling to keep warm. We are up relatively early and off to the camp kitchen for tea and toast. We forgot to get some butter when we went shopping so we are just about to run out, thankfully we have enough for toast this morning. We sort out the walls for the awnings to make sure that they are all dry so that they can be folded and put away properly. The last month has not been easy getting anything dry, but I mustn’t grumble. It seems that the few people left on the campsite this morning are all doing their washing, except for me, I did mine a few days ago. The washing lines are already full. ... read more

DAY 138 I heard Andy get out of bed and could hear footsteps around the tent, he reappears and says “Dennis is still outside but he had changed trees”, excellent our very own camp Koala is still hanging round with us. Andy went to get the kettle on and spark up the laptop, I followed shortly after with the breakfast things. Thankfully it is a fairly warm morning, though still a bit cloudy there is no sign of any rain. I hope that it stays that way. I did comment in the kitchen this morning but a lady said, “Oh No we need the rain”, I agree I know South Australia and many other parts of Australia need the rain, I am purely thinking from a selfish point of view that camping is a lot easier ... read more

DAY 137 I know why Nissan chose to test the Patrol in Australia. Oh God, I hear Andy opening the zip on the inner windows of the tent; I think he must be letting the daylight in, too early surely? No, Andy confirms that it is 7.15! Andy wanders off for his shower while I ease myself into the daylight, what little of it there is. However I need to get up and with it, so that I have time for a shower before breakfast. We are both looking forward to the adventure that today will bring, as we are off to Kangaroo Island, where we hope to continue our search for wildlife. We pack the tent up while it is still dry, the weather over the see looks as if it is bringing rain with ... read more

As Part II of the 30th birthday celebration, Sidd and I headed to South Australia for a wine tour (more on this later) and to visit Kangaroo Island, the 2nd largest island off of Australia. Why, one might question, is it named Kangaroo Island? Is it because it is shaped like a Kangaroo? Or because it is overrun by these bouncy marsupials? Well, no... it’s because the explorers, upon discovering the island, feasted on Kangaroo for their first meal. Yum. KI, as the locals call it, is quite remote and can only be reached by ferry from Cape Jervis (1.5 hours from Adelaide). Home to only 4,400 people, one must truly love nature and the sense of stillness to call KI home. There are only a few sealed roads on the island, thus requiring you to ... read more
