Today we started our day with a 9Km walk in the 'wilderness'! We did nearly die- 7am and 9Km do not go together- at least not in my world! But the views were amazing and we saw some great wildlife. These included Kangaroos, a Goana, some black swans, parrots and some very large ants! We walked up high in the hills so could see far into the distance- check out the pics. We eventually came across a river and then followed that to end up at the beach- the most beautiful beach on our entire trip to KI. We got to paddle for a bit and then headed back to the farm for lunch and got our bags packed ready to leave. After lunch we went on a koala hunt (only to see them of ... read more

Flinders Chase National Park: Seals and Seascapes A Long Drive that was Well Worth It After a quick stop by Kingscote for breakfast, we took the long drive to the exact opposite side of the island from where we were staying in Penneshaw. On the far end of the island is Flinders Chase National Park which is one of the must see sights on Kangaroo Island. The only unfortunate part of this story is that Flinders Chase is more than 2 hours from our origin point in Penneshaw. I know this is a sob story…poor Mikey had to drive two hours in Australia on a Tuesday morning. No more griping, I promise. With food in our stomachs, we arrived at Flinders Chase at about 11:30am which is a couple of hours before the tour buses tend ... read more

Day two on the great KI (short for Kangaroo Island obviously!). We had to get up early but the bacon and eggs were a good incentive! We started the day by going to see the Remarkable Rocks. They were very funny shapes and remarkable because they were so huge yet only had a few points actually balancing them on the cliff. As you may be able to see in some of the pics. Our next stop was Admirals Arch New Zealand Fur Seal Colony. The views as we walked around the bay were breathtaking and it was fun trying to spot all the seals as they were well camouflaged against the rocks. After that we went to Flinders Chase National Park for a platypus walk. We had to follow a trail and came across lots ... read more

ok, so we got up again at the crack of dawn (by now you may have figured out that this vacation is about experiences and not really slepping in ) in order to be the first ones at the Remarkable Rocks inside Flinders Chase National Park. So after leaving our lovely farm, we drove the 20 km to the Rocks. During the drive, we had the rare chance to see a Koala cross the street just in front of us and then hustle off in to the trees, and we saw Kangaroos and Wallaby again as they were trying to find a cool shaded place to rest for the day. The Remarkables are some pretty amazing Granite Rocks that sit on a huge dome overlooking the raging waters below. We used the early hour to ... read more

After the night out with my friends from Geneva, the end of day light savings time here in Australia could not come at a more convenient time! The extra hour of sleep can make quite the difference when you have to get up at 5:30 am!! Needless to say, it was an early start nevertheless, and after a 2 hour drive to the ferry and then another hour on the boat, I arrived on Kangaroo Island at around 10:15 am. This time i was travelling with Adventure tours again, since they were such a good operator at Uluru already. Our group was very small, just six of us, plus our driver and guide Simon, and so we basically got to know eachother super quick, and what a good thing i had to practice my French ... read more

Four full days in Australia and not a single sighting of a kangaroo. Gene and I grew rather disheartened. After quizzing several locals, we learned that kangaroos are nocturnal animals that feed from dusk until dawn, reenergizing in the forests during the light of day. I convinced Gene that, according to the books, one day on Kangaroo Island should do the trick. After all, why else would the island be named after the infamous Australian marsupial? Just to be safe, I consulted with our waiter at dinner. “What do we have to do to see a kangaroo in this place?!? If we get up at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning and take a drive, are we pretty much guaranteed to see one?” “Yes…just drive in that direction,” pointing in a southwestly direction with his left forefinger.” Like ... read more

Friday 9th Feb we headed to Kangaroo Island. KI is only 13km off SA's coast and is a serene beautiful place with a small population. There is an abundance of glorious birds, animals, and ocean-based creatures. Amazing beaches with white sand and turquoise seas scatter the coastlines. We got another hire car from Europcar, and we got upgraded!! Instead of a little hairdressers car, we had a Hyundai Tuscan, kind of like a 4 wheel drive machine! We set off from Adelaide towards the ferry at Cape Jervis, which we were told was an hour an a half drive. We gave ourselves that long and soon realised that we may miss the ferry! The ferry that we were booked on was leaving at 10am, and we had to be there 30 mins before to check in. ... read more

The ferry to Kangaroo island from Cape Jervis was a delight, slighty rocky but with red wine out of a cheap box to steady me it was fine. Discovered on arrival just how big the island is, so the plan to tour it for a day on a bike had to go, so booked a car. First evening included the penguins waddling down for their nightspot, then picked up the car with me driving for a day (cheaper to hire for day on island then take car over on ferry) an unremarkable Toyota Echo which was the first autmatic I've ever driven, so a few sudden stops as I forgot there is not a clutch and whacked the break full on. Has some stunning scenery but you have to keep the speed DOWN as lizards adorn ... read more

A quick flight later and we were in Adelaide. Time to recharge the batteries before another early start to catch a bus from the city centre down to Cape Jervis to catch the Sealink ferry to Kangaroo Island. We'd booked a car at Penneshaw to drive round the island as there are no local public transport services. Now to look at the island on a map it appears very small in comparison to Australia, however is about 120Km long. Only the main roads are sealed, the rest being dirt tracks cut through the bush which makes pretty hairy driving, especially when the roads become ridged like corrogated iron and driving at any less than 50Km/hour feels like you're in a car suspension test centre. Our first stop of the day was to the information centre to ... read more
