Introduction The Hikers went to Kangaroo Island for a family holiday and treated themselves to a repeat visit of the Fish Cannery walk at American River. Joining us on this walk were three of Dan's cousins (Jessie, Katherine and Joseph), Dan's grandmother (my Mum, Elly) and Dan's Uncle Michael. You may remember we also went on this walk last year - . You can find out more about American River from this web site and from the Postcards web site. If you are family or friends of the Hikers, you may be also interested to see these other slide shows of our American River holiday looking at * fishing, * url=http://www.skyalbum.com/sh... read more

It's monday morning and once again it's time to pack. As my cousin Mark is due to pick me up at midday. Mark is taking me on a camping trip to Kangaroo Island, yey. He arrives soon after i've finished packing. As Mark's girlfriend Angela is away with her parents in the whitsunday's. Their dog Archie is to stay with Uncle Chris and his dog Bruce, much their delight. We make our way back towards mark's house to collect provisions, Before we head off to the ferry at four o'clock. The ferry only took 45 min's, but i would recomend not reading, as it doesn't make you feel too great. hey, we made it, only to discover that the keys were locked in the car, opps. Lucky the ferry carries equipment for such problems and we ... read more

God oplevelse. Arrived in Adelaide from my tour down from Alice Springs. First few days I literally spent sleeping off the previous 5 day tour. Was so tired, that all I could muster up was the strength to do my washing (everything was orange from the rocks) and watch the Arsenal match at 4am. Before I knew it 2 nights had passed and it was time for my second tour, of Kangaroo Island and Adelaide. The first day I was picked up at 10am and we toured the city of Adelaide, a very attractive city with parks all around it which really adds to the attraction. We drove up to Mount Lofty, a vantage point from which to view the city. Then it was on to kangaroo Island. A 1 hour ferry ride and we arrived just before ... read more

Leaving our campsite at Salt Creek, as well as Larry's remains - sucked dry and respectfully placed in the rubbish bin - we continue our drive northwards along the Limestone Coast before turning left towards the Fleurieu Peninsula. This finger of land juts out westwards into the Great Australian Bight, sixty or so kilometres south of Adelaide. "The Fleurieu" is a popular destination for holidaying Australians, and has acquired something of a "foodie" reputation. Sounds like our kind of place...Our destination for the moment, however, is not the peninsula itself but the island that lies at its tip. Getting to the peninsula from the Coorong involves crossing Australia's largest and most important waterway - the Murray River. At this point there are no bridges spanning the river, a modest one by European standards, so we take ... read more

I remember this past week, my last full week on this isle del kangaroos, dragging on and on like the old, brown Chevrolet Caprice Classic station wagon we had when i was a kid. the thing just wouldn't die. Now that the week is over, done with, dead, it seems like a blur. I didn't do a whole lot: a bit of grapevine pruning, a bit of gardening, a bit of fencing (the post and wire variety, not the enguard! Touché! have at you! stuff...duh). Some of you may be asking, "does bryan ever do more than a bit of this; a bit of that? what the heck?" and to that i say...stop asking questions. Teresa left on thursday because...well, because she wanted to go somewhere else. We wish her the best. Saturday Bob and Lorraine ... read more

Sunday afternoon I returned from the spear fishing trip tired and sandy (inside and out). I must have eaten enough sand over the course of the weekend to fill a fish bowl. Not that I’m complaining; sand in anything and everything you come into contact with, especially your food, is part of the “fun” of camping on the beach, is it not? The bus was gone when we pulled into the driveway so I deduced that Bob, Lorraine, and Teresa must be in Kingscote. I grabbed my gear off of the truck, thanked Anthony and Rachel for rescuing me from the farm yet again, and made my way through the gate to the yard. My rescuers sped off, eager to get home and de-sand themselves. As I passed through the gate I spotted a familiar face ... read more

Cramming 4 people into the cab of a small pickup truck is DUMB. So, naturally, that's what we did (if you''re just joining us, it's friday afternoon and Rachel, Mary, and Anthony have just picked me up to go camping/spear fishing). we arrived at Western River Cove, a beach on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, gently opened the door, and fell out onto the ground with a collective groan of relief. looking around we could see one camping site at the end of the road next to the foot bridge and...that's all. one site. and it's not even close to the beach, which is where we all want to camp. the only way to get to the beach is to cross the foot bridge over the river and make your way through the sand dunes. ... read more

To be a successful farmer--and by that i mean, to be a farmer who doesn't go mad and throw himself in front of a tractor or play hide-and-seek with his cows--you have to possess a fantastical, and often cynical sense of humor. the fire will burn where you don't want it to and will completely avoid the dead tree you've been trying to burn out for the past week. when it finally does burn out, the dead tree will do exactly what you've been trying to get it to do for days; it will fall over...right on top of the fence. the frost will kill all your plants but won't harm a solitary leaf on a single weed, a weed that is also killing your plants. the cows will be unwilling to move to a fresh ... read more

Saturdays are for sleeping in. unless you live in the caravan at the edge of Bob and Lorraine's lawn. In this case, saturdays are for trying to convince your feeble brain (unsuccessfully) that you're still asleep from the time the birds scream at you at the crack of dawn to about 9am when Lorraine comes a-rapping on your door to inform you that Rachel will be picking you up in a half hour. bryan does groaning now. All of my sleep woes and crankiness were washed away when i shuffled my way into the house to find Lorraine feverishly putting together a lunch for me and, at the same time, reminding me to bring a towel, a change of clothes, my camera, and of course, a smile. have i told you how wonderful this woman is? ... read more
