i slept right through my alarm sunday morning and didn't wake up until 8 am. i was supposed to wake up at 5:30 am to join a few other volunteers on a guided hike to the top of the peak, but saturday night's dancing festivities made sure that didn't happen. so i missed the hike, which turned out to be a long, arduous, all-day affair; and the peak was socked in with clouds anyway. down at the ranch, however, we had a delicious brunch followed by a short hike to a waterfall up the road. there was splashing and swimming and sliding on rocks. when we got back i joined grace, lara and andrea for a long walk that involved bamboo and kung-fu panda posing. upon our return i accompanied julie on her walk to La ... read more

thursday brought the dealer from La Iguana, a km up the road from Rancho Mastatal, who supplies the residents and caretakers here with their bi-weekly fix. the stuff is homegrown, all natural, potent, and highly addictive. the dealer arrives on foot with a giant backpack full of primo stock. the junkies go into a frenzy, scrambling for cash and change, and calling in favors from their housemates, "I hooked you up last time; it's time to pay up!" the entire compound comes to a screeching halt as the dealer sits down and unloads his backpack. they huddle around him and his choice assortment that is splayed out on the table. after a minute of glossy staring and drooling, the dealing begins. as i'm a first time buyer i decide to try a bit of each variety ... read more

It has been said many times that the best of journeys start at 3 in the morning. Or maybe it was only said once. just now. by me. what's the point? uhm...i guess just that i had to get up at 3am to drive 3 hours to the albuquerque airport to catch my flight to costa rica. correction: awesome girlfriend, her seester, and i had to get up at 3am and drive me 3 hours to the airport. these details are important in order to give credit where it is due. Thank you, Dani and Hillary; you're the best. i should probably just get on with it then. I decided to spend my month-long winter break in costa rica because i've heard it's the happiest place on earth. and there are monkeys. these really are the ... read more

Social Instruction - Friday night brought the beginning of Dashain celebrations, and with it, my introduction to beaten rice. I would spend the next two weeks trying to either avoid this particular version of a food I had been living off of for the past two weeks, or trying to suffer through it. It is essentially a dried and flattened version of cooked rice, which is delicious. Beaten rice, however, tastes like very thin bits of cardboard, no matter how much dhal you soak it in. This is the only part of the longest Nepali festival of the year know as Dashain that I am not a fan of. Well, goat and buffalo sacrifices aren’t all that fun either. I’ll tell you what is fun though—drinking home brewed rice beer and socializing with Shrawan and his ... read more

Bhaktapur - Thursday is Bhaktapur day. Pell and I had been reminding ourselves all week. Now, Thursday had arrived, the children were all off to school; and that’s when we realized. “Thursday is Bhaktapur day.” That simple statement encompassed the entirety of the planning we had done for the outing. We had maybe glanced at a map to get the general idea of where it was in relation to Kathmandu, but ultimately we had done little to no research. Poor Bhesh was yet again approached by these two American simpletons in need of direction. So, Bhesh…how do we get to Bhaktapur? Fortunately, Bhesh loves being of service to people. It makes him feel important. We are eternally grateful. It was simple enough: Catch a micro to the bus park in Lagenkhel, walk to the other side ... read more

A New Bedfellow - At first I thought it was just the heat getting to me as we climbed step after step, ascending to the top of the Monkey Temple at Pashupatinath. I was feeling weak and tired and decided I just needed some water. I had been hacking up the Kathmandu air pollution for the last few days like a true Nepali, and so was already feeling a bit under full capacity, but this was different. By the time Pell and I returned to Godavari I was officially achy. It had been years since I’d felt like this, but I still knew Fever’s ugly mug when I saw him creep up behind me and put his arm around me smugly, as if we were old pals. He made it clear he intended to stay a ... read more

Pashupatinath - “Good morning, Brother!” The calls from the children begin immediately as Pell and I walk through the gate at Ama Ghar. Every morning is essentially the same, playing out a now familiar routine. We say our good mornings to the children outside who are washing their stainless steel plates and brushing their teeth; to the children inside who are getting ready to leave for school or are studying in the eating area; and to the Ama Ghar staff who are tutoring, cleaning, or making us tea. We sit in the kitchen and have our ridiculously hot chia and biscuits. My tongue is in a constant state of recovery from being burned every morning by this hot, tasty liquid. I’m sure it’s building character. After tea we go upstairs and check e-mail or read the ... read more

Godavari Village Resort - Just a 10 minute walk up the road from Ama Ghar is the Godavari Village Resort, complete with a famously delicious breakfast menu, conference rooms, relatively lush accommodations, and an outdoor pool. It was the last Monday before the big Dasain Holiday break and the younger children didn’t have to go to school; so Pell and I agreed to take them swimming. Not much arm twisting was necessary as the weather here is fairly hot and humid when it’s not raining. Many people, when they think of Nepal, think mountains, snow, and cold. They often forget that, even though we are nestled in a valley at 5,000 plus feet, just south of the Himalayas, we are still in the tropics and so summers here are still very, well, tropical. The point being ... read more

Buddha Tan- Biratjan, one of the older children here at Ama Ghar, said the hike should only take us 30 minutes. Normally, that would be an accurate estimate, but on this particular occasion he failed to take into account the nature of our hiking companions: small children prone to sneaky manipulations that can result in unexpected detours. Yes, Pell and I had decided to take 11 of the younger ones for a hike up to the 50-foot Golden Buddha that sits atop a hill at the edge of the village. Or so we thought. The reality of the situation was that they were indeed taking us for a hike. The children knew that their foreign brothers did not know the way to the sacred site; and they gleefully (and very slyly) took full advantage of this ... read more

Children’s Day - The night before I had committed to waking up at 5am in order to accompany Bonnie, Bhesh, and some of the children to a National Children’s Day event in Kathmandu. Committing myself to such an early rising was easy—I knew I would be awake at 4am anyway. The neighborhood the apartment is situated in wakes up all at once, but in a very distinct sequence. First there is the confused rooster who decides to start crowing a good two hours before sunrise. His cock-a-doodle-do’s come in random spurts. Once you think he is satisfied that everyone knows it is morning, even though it really isn’t yet, he lets out another sleep-destroying crow. Shortly after, the dogs begin to make their presence known. Sometimes they are fighting and snarling, sometimes they are whining, and ... read more
