Happy New Year everybody! For those of you that have been following our escapades you'll be well aware that we had an altogether un-British Christmas planned. Gone was the snow, the cold, the clouds...bring on the sun, the heat, the dry, arid desert. We'd booked ourselves off work for nigh on three weeks (THREE WEEKS!) of roadtrippin' across the arid, drought stricken, skeletal dusty desert that is Australia in the summer. After years of drought, who knows how these two temperate travellers would fare against the sun's harsh, unforgiving rays?... And lo, it raineth. And great goblets of slop did pour from on high and they did splatteth upon us. And they looked at it and they saw that it was wet. Then they looked into the back of the van and they saw that that ... read more

... read more

My second day on Kangaroo island saw us heading towards the south west, to Flinders Chase National Park. On the way we saw some black swans with signets on the shore line and pelicans up close and personal, a wedge tailed eagle and the 4th most venomous snake the black backed tiger snakesunning himself on the road! During our coffee stop a superb fairy wren dropped by.....Arriving at Flinders Chase National Park took us to Remarkable Rocks, an incredible rock formation right on the coast our guide Jon thought the name was a bit too British and perhaps a more Oz name should be "Bloo**y Amazing Rocks! I think he is right they are incredible! Then down to Cape du Couedic the far south westand Admiral Arch to see New Zealand Fur Seals on the rugged coastland ... read more

What a fantastic day on Kangaroo Island just a short flight from Adelaide We were picked up at Kingscote, the main town on the island, by our guide Jon, a native of the island. What an interesting and informative guy he is turning out to be. There were just five of us in our group including Jon so we had a great opportunity to see a lot in our 4 x 4 as we travelled over the Island, which is about 100 miles long and 35 miles across (Seven times larger than Singapore Island!) It was not long before we saw our first koala and Kangaroo Island, Kangaroo in the wild as we headed north to Stokes Bay discovering a beautiful unspoilt beach and a stop for coffee and see a pelican drop by! Next heading ... read more

I have just returned from a two night one day tour of Kangaroo Island, not too far from Adelaide. We were driven there the night before, then a full day of touring, and returned the morning after. The tour is claimed to be three days, but that's a stretch. It takes about 3 hours to get to Kangaroo Island including the 45 minute ferry crossing, so a day tour is extremely rushed. The night I got there, a very friendy couple I met in the pub having dinner sitting next to me showed me around the town of Penneshaw. It's a small town of a few hundred residents and almost as many penguins. The fairy penguins come back to the mainland at night after a full day of swimming and having fun in the ocean. They're ... read more

Once we felt comfortable that we had slipped the authorities in Mount Gambier, we could enjoy the country side. It was raining off and on again and it was not long until we could check off our daily rainbow. Then we got stopped by a ferry river crossing that was not shown on the maps, but that gave me time to snap my daily windmill shot. Before long the scenery really changed to flat, and I mean reall y flat. Stopped for a bite to eat in a really quaint little town and shot one of the many stone churches...they are gorgeous. The country side then turned to what for a lack of anything else...a golf course that went on forever...it was beautiful. Shot a picture of Kangaroo Island before sunset, and one as we left ... read more

Kangaroo Island From Adelaide we did a one day trip to Kangaroo island, used to be inhabited by many kangaroos. Now there are more koalas. So many that the government started birth control and sterilisation programmes to reduce the number of koalas. So we saw koalas, kangaroos, walaby's and seals. The coastline was also nice and the remarkable rocks, so called for their funny shapes. We vertrekken ... read more

I have seen a variety of wild-life throughout my trip, but nowhere it was as concentrated as on Kangaroo island. Penguins, seals of different kinds, platypus, koalas, wallabies and kangaroos, of course, to name a few of the animals we saw. I believe I've already commented about the way wild animals seems unusual to me, and it was even stronger now. Walking near the farm we were staying at and noticing a big lump on the tree that turned out to be a Koala seemed even more strange and special. But I really understood that when we got to the "pelican circus". In Kingscote, the bigger town on the island, there's a guy who feeds the pelicans there every evening. I don't know how did it start, but clearly it's more for the tourist than ... read more
