Talking About the Weather This is a typical snapshot of the weekly weather for Spring in Townsville. It's getting progressively more humid and hot here. It's rather unbearable before 4pm. Even the ocean water is a balmy 27 C! However, the moisture has made for some beautiful rainbows and sunsets. The Good Our boat has new motors! Two 200 horsepower babies that took our normal island transport time from 43 to 20 minutes. My hair is just now starting to lay flat again. The skipper for this trip was an experienced sea dog complete with fun stories and a great attitude. This was a dive club only weekend trip, so I didn't have to worry about rescuing new divers and all the dive masters were relaxed without having to worry about students. It also meant ... read more

Over the last few months, I've accrued several small but noteworthy events. This post is my critique on the little things, and some of the not so little cultural things. Flowers What better place to start than with a beautiful flower? Well, these guys are in bloom everywhere. They dot the paths on the way to Uni, grow near my favorite jogging path, and are pretty much everywhere I like to be. My fellow North Carolinians, be grateful we only have the bradford pear to deal with. These blossoms smell like road kill left to bake on an 80 degree road. And unlike the bradford pear, which blooms above your head and usually doesn't waft too far, these attractive flowers blossom from the ground. And I literally have to hold my breath for a good 50 ... read more

Hi Everyone, I had promised I would get this started up when I was back home so here goes. It was great to be able to see everyone while back in the states, I wish I could visit more often and spend more time at each spot, but I guess this is one of the disadvantages of living so far away. I don't have nearly as much to report as when I was travelling, but since being home to visit in the states I have had one worthy adventure. I went out on another research trip with AIMS (Australia Institute of Marine Science). The trip was led by Dr. Walt Dunlap with main objectives of collecting corals, sponges, and ascidians for genetic testing. I was recruited to help with the diving and collection. The vessel was ... read more

Challenges of Delight Those of you who know me, know that I like challenges. That the phrase "You can't do that" is more of an invitation than a deterrent to me. When I was younger, it was easy to challenge myself, because it was usually fueled by anger at some idiotic boy telling me "You can't ______ cause you're a girl." But now that I'm older, and my peers no longer spout such nonsense, the challenges lie in the new and unknowns. And it's amazing how frightening and difficult it can be to challenge yourself. Because who knows what frightens you more than yourself - who's able to say just the right things to dissuade you? When I chat about my experiences, I'm amazed at the number of people who say "you're fearless!" or "I ... read more

Well if there is anyone out there who doesn't know that I'm going away, now you know. I may have left it to the last minute to pack, but I really did think I had plenty of space to use. I got a bit worried last night when I had to sit on my case to zip it up, but everything eventually went in. Hopefully there is a map on the top of this blog entry that shows where I'm going. Essentially it will be Singapore, Spain, Egypt, London, Argentina and Antarctica. A bit of hot and a lot of cold... hard to pack for trips like this. The aim is to get lots of awesome photos, have a nice bike ride, see some pyramids and not get and gastro. I'll try and put some ... read more

Specializing in Palms This lovely botanic garden, located a convenient kilometer from my house, features the family Arecaceae (the palms) and hosts representatives from each of the six subfamilies. Many of these species are local, but the garden hosts several rare/endangered non-native palms as well. The sporadic paths makes winding your way through the garden an interesting pursuit. I enjoyed the oval, relatively unorganized, dirt, gravel, and concrete paths quite a lot. The garden was much larger than Queens Garden, and was divided into several sections based on climate. Aside from a fascinating collection of palms ranging in sizes from small shrubs to towering trees with leaves that could leave you concussed, their was a wide range of wildlife gracing the gardens. Of course, I had forgot my camera (a habit I will break), but ... read more

Oddly familiar Downtown Townsville felt a bit like a New Orleans river ferry on Saturday. All of Palmer street was dedicated to small jazz bands, with larger bands performing earlier in the day. I cycled downtown, and in the hope of sparing my back the consistent presence of a backpack, I didn't bring a camera. Of course, it was awesomely photogenic and I missed out on wonderful shots. As much as the festival reminded me of the States, so too did it remind me that I'm not in the States. For all it's familiarity everything was a bit off. From the choice of instruments, to the organized structure in which the audience gathered. It wasn't nearly as chaotic as Jazz in the New Orleans tradition, nor was their a trombone in sight. I believe it's ... read more

Nathan Street Bridge Perhaps I'm poetic but I hope I will always be impressed by the view from the bridge as I cycle home. I snapped these photos after cycling for 3 hours around downtown. I was tired, sore, slightly sunburnt, and thirsty, but the unique colors and utter stillness or the Ross River enticed me to snap a photo. The view of the stars at night is also impressive when I cycle home from later escapades. ... read more
