Tuesday 9th August – Having arrived safely yesterday and settled in nicely at the Walkabout Palms caravan park, we had a couple of priorities to sort out today. We needed to arrange for the rear brake shoes on PIE to be replaced and the handbrake cable to be checked and replaced if necessary. We had tried to get this done in Darwin but a three week waiting list and an advanced payment requirement of $600 persuaded us to hang on until we got to Queensland and to Townsville in particular. The brakes have been behaving well but at the last service, some 14000 kilometers ago, we were warned that the rear brakes were in need of attention and the handbrake cable had already been repaired and adjusted twice – once in Perth and again while we ... read more

(plus cycle tyre repair kit!) Sunday 7th August – this morning we overslept! When we finally came to it was about 7.45 and I know that doesn’t sound late but today we had a long journey in front of us and later on in the day it would be very hot for travelling. After a mighty effort from us both we were on the road by 9:00am. We’d really enjoyed our short stay in Mount Isa and after initially wondering how we would fill two days here we still didn’t get to see everything the city had to offer. Now though we were heading towards the east coast and the major city of Townsville. For the first part of the journey the road was undulating and very bumpy causing the caravan to “bounce” over the undulations ... read more
To start with the road wasn't too bad and there was pretty countryside around
Still a very long way to Townsville
We haven't seen too many groups of motorbikes like this on our travels

Not long after we left Ayr, we pulled into Townsville. Seemingly ages later we found the caravan park, which was right next to the RAAF base. Seeing the planes take off and circle Townsville was fun. Wish I had more time to explore the RAAF base, and watch the planes, however, the family preferred to tour the sites of Townsville. After the quickest set up yet, we drove into Townsville city centre and visited Reef HQ - an aquarium, man-made coral reef, and turtle hospital. The boys learned about corals, mangroves, and the variety of fish that live in the GBR. They also learned about the effects Cyclone Yasi had on the reef and the wildlife that it supports. (Interesting fact, it can take 10 years for the reef to recover after a huge cyclone) After ... read more

Someone once said to me, “The only thing you really own in this life is your story, so you’d better make it a good one”. This statement troubled me for a long time. I gave it a lot of thought and realized I don’t really have a story, not one that anyone would read anyway, mine would be that dusty auto-biography that sat up the back of the shelf for years on end until it was finally discounted to $1.50, and someone buys it to put their kids to sleep. Yeah I’ve tried a few things like diving, kite surfing an skydiving, but never stuck with anything long enough to get good at it or to have stories to tell or even to say, “yeah, I’m a skydiver”. Long ($1.50) story short, school was uneventful, 12 ... read more

Saturday 30th July 2011 By 8am we had left the park, stopping at Airlie Beach to go to the Saturday Market they hold there. This had the usual type of stall we have often seen, with a few fruit and vegetable stalls as well. We left with a couple of bags of vegetables and fruit, plus some gifts and a few photos we took. Lunch was had in the van at Ayr, where we arrived just before lunch with time to buy some fresh bread and a hot chicken at the Coles store there. We continued on, reaching Townsville about 2pm. We had chosen a caravan park from one of the brochures but on arriving we were told there were no vacancies. The manager did ring a couple of other places, all full, until he rang ... read more

3 Nights in Townsville. Loved this place! Like a mini Brisbane but on the Great Barrier Reef. Only a few days out from the V8 Supercar Race so lots of people around. Castle Hill right in the middle of town has fantastic views of the whole of Townsville. We went for a stroll along "The Stand" a beachfront walkway lined with restaurants, coffee shops a rock pool and great water park for kids when we got a call from friends who we haven't talked to for ages. Major coincidence that they happen to live in Townsville so we had cofee and cought up with them...3 hours later we headed back to camp. Maxi went into doggy day care. I think he was grateful for the sleep time. Old dog needs lots of sleep which he ... read more

Hi again guys, have travelled almost 3500kms & the last 2 towns have been my faves so far. Absolutely loved Bowen. We had lunch out under the pub verandah where they filmed the movie 'Australia'. I can truly understand why Baz fell in love with the town when he was scouting locations for the film. We had a fun night at Bowen getting harassed by the bloody Maroons supporters during & after the 3rd & final State of Origin. Geez it sux being a Blues supporter up here when they lose. Today & yesterday we have been in Townsville where we drove to the top of Castle Hill, the 360 degree views of the city & Magnetic Island were amazing. We had a bird's eye view of the Townsville 400 V8 Supercar race (Go Holden). Their ... read more

After 10 hours of travelling, we finally made it to Townsville. Lorelei travelled surprisingly well but did tell us that she wished she was home instead of in the "stupid car". She also suggested that deciding to go on a holiday that started so far away was "a very silly idea". Today's highlights are getting a whole heap of kilometres done today so that we don't have as much tomorrow and finally glimpsing the ocean. Toni and I also got our first drives towing the trailers today and we didn't hit anything! We are looking forward to Cairns tomorrow and a couple of days rest. Al has decided that he doesn't like our back end dragging on the ground so he will spend a day installing airbags in the back of the 'Cruiser.... read more

Our first day at Airlie Beach was fun! We found a group of pools that were next to the beach & we swam with our Dad for a couple of hours. In the afternoon we made friends with some other kids staying at the park. We played ball games & rode our scooters for hours. On Saturday Mum took us to the markets where we saw a camel walking on the beach in the morning & in the afternoon we played with our friends at the caravan park & swam in the pool. Our Dad & Uncle went fishing out amongst the islands & bought us a shark home for tea! On Sunday we went to Cedar Creek Falls which were pretty cool. We skipped rocks on the water under the waterfall & built some cairns ... read more

We are staying at Bluewater Creek just north of Townsville tonight after three nights at Airlie Beach. Airlie was pretty good. On the first whole day we had there we wandered around the main strip & found a nice little pool & playground area for the kids & Dad’s to swim in while the Mum’s were shopping & deciding what to do over the next few days. The next day Phil & I hired a boat to try our luck. I got a few (a Silver Perch, a Bronze Whaler & a Sucker Fish (in search of a better name – the type that stick themselves to the bottom of other bigger fish)). Overall we were pretty disappointed not to pull up some Spanish Mackerel or a Trevally of some type, although we did get some ... read more
