In a week’s time we will be leaving the Townsville sunshine to begin our adventure. The house is almost packed, we are making our last purchases and spending what time we have with our family and friends whom we will miss very much. This weekend we celebrated an early Christmas with the Hanson family on Magnetic Island, complete with a roast dinner (thanks to Sandy), golf, snorkelling, swimming and ice cream. – check out some photos below. Less than a month ago we had our engagement party here in Townsville, many of our friends and family travelled to share this night with us and it was the last time we will see many of them for over a year. It was a special night – check out some photos below. Our first ... read more

Day 45, 26/10/11 We were talking about what we were going to do today over breakfast and decided that it wasn't going to be a lot. We were incredibly bored and the place was filthy, so we decided to leave a day early and head back to Townsville for one night. We caught the 1:35pm ferry back and booked into the same lovely hostel we were in just a few days ago. We met a girl from London who was in our room and we headed down to the harbour and had a good old chin wag over an ice cream. We headed back to the hostel for dinner and a shower before heading back down to the harbour to the Casino. The last time I was in a Casino was in Las Vegas but now ... read more

Day 41, 22/10/11 Got up early this morning as the free breakfast goes quick and they don't put anymore out and as a backpacker free food is a no brainer. Was at breakfast at just gone 8 filling myself up before meeting up with 2 girls I met on The Whitsunday boat for a day at the Lagoon. Airlie Beach has a water front but no real beach so the lovely people of Australia made a lagoon there which was lovely as you did't get all sandy, could still swim and still soak up the sun which is exactly what we did all day. Went to Coles supermarket in the evening for some ingredients for dinner and packed in the evening ready to move on. I am starting to hate packing! Day 42, 23/10/11 Up early ... read more

22/10/11 Tennant Creek to Townsville. Hello Everyone! The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind as we have passed from the hot, dry, arid lands of the NT and central inland QLD to humid rain-forests in Far North QLD to mild Maryborough a few hours north of Brisbane where we are now! I donned a jumper and long trousers the other day for the first time since leaving Perth's winter. I must say that as much as I complain (frequently and loudly!) about the cold of Melbourne winters, it was a little bit of a relief to be able to enjoy slightly cooler weather at last. It rained non-stop during our first three months and has not rained not at all in the past three months…until this week! But I like rain! And ... read more

It is about the half way mark, so I thought that it was time for a little summary of things. By Georgina Since Tennant Creek (5 days ago), we have moved with fairly rapid speed over what is known as The Overlander's Hwy. We have seen a lot of dust, huge cattle stations (in the distance) and endless road ahead of us. We have stayed at Mt Isa, Cloncurry (where I was able to catch up with my Aunty and Uncle who I have not seen in nearly 4 years-they left Perth in May for a 12 month around Oz and we miraculously managed to meet up for a night in the middle of no where), Charters Towers (a really nice gold mining town with many of the old buildings still operable in the main street) ... read more

Yesterday after a drive from Charters Towers we arrived in Townsville. After we had set up we went to have a look around town. We found the Reef HQ. It is the Aquarium for the Great Barrier Reef. It was fantastic. We saw many of the things that were on the reef-turtles, leopard sharks, sting rays, dory fish, small crocodiles, angel fish and other bright tropical fish, coral, sponges, seaweed and other great things that you would find. We watched the feeding of the fish. I was really fascinating how they all went for different types of food. Some even fought for the food. The sting ray glides along the ground and just picks the food up in their mouth. My favourite part was going out to the turtle hospital. Volunteers work there. They keep sick ... read more

Monday 15th - during our stay in Townsville we were determined to have a swim in the splendid rock pool and today we prepared a picnic and drove to what has become our favourite location – The Strand. We were able to park right next to the pool and easily carried our picnic, our books, towels etc to the grassy poolside. We’ve always carried a second set of picnic chairs in the car and have often made good use of them. Today we made good use of them again as we relaxed watching the comings and goings by the pool and enjoying our picnic. Eventually, after reading for a while, we ventured into the pool and it was lovely. It’s so big that you never have trouble finding a swimming space and the water temperature was ... read more

Next installment of the Queensland blogs! This area was one of my favourites in Australia so far, as I saw so many completely amazing things. I was up early to catch my 7.45am bus to Townsville, but it wasn't too bad a journey as I managed to sleep most of the way. It was nice and warm still when I arrived in Townsville, so I went for a walk around town to orientate myself, though alas, most of the shops were closed or closing. It became apparent quite quickly that Townsville was a bit of a quiet place to be on a Monday. Still, my walk allowed me to collect some leaflets from the tourist information place and plan what I wanted to do for the next few days. After a lot of thought, I booked ... read more

Friday 12th – This was another early start as we were anxious to get the brakes done on the car and to get her back as early as possible. So we arrived at the brake specialist’s garage soon after 8:00am and asked for directions to the nearest shopping centre where we thought we could pass a couple of hours. The young lad who was about to start work on the car straight away (a good sign) pointed us in the direction of Currajong which he said had a cinema complex. Thinking this would be a fair sized centre, we walked the 2 kilometers or so to find that a cinema complex was virtually all it had – and that didn’t open until 10:30!! To be fair, there was a small supermarket and three or four other ... read more

We have been amazed at the number of people who spend a great part of their lives travelling around Australia. Of course, like us, there are plenty of people from overseas who are fascinated by Australia and everything it has to offer the inquisitive tourist. We were aware, too, that a lot of Australians aim to complete “The Big Lap” at some time in their lives. But the colossal number of Aussies spending time on the road (not all of them “lappers”) has completely taken us by surprise. There are far more than we remember from our last trip eight years ago. Caravan parks are regularly full reflecting the ever-increasing numbers that are following their dream. We often have a bit of fun trying to identify the type of traveller we encounter and we are becoming ... read more
