We arrived in Townsville, late on Tuesday night (24th May). We were planning to camp the night but the accommodation was full so we kept driving to Mel and Ersin’s house. We hadn’t had dinner yet so we were starving. Mel’s sister and family were also there. We went down to the Strand in the morning and found a flying fox. Ash and I did a double wammie (two of us together). Mum, Dad and Mel also had a go – so we helped push them. We saw our first red-tailed black cockatoo eating palm nuts high in a tree. One day we took the ferry to Magnetic island. Mel works for the ferry company Fantasea so we got on for free. We went for a walk to the old Australian army forts and saw a ... read more

About halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, Townsville seems to have the ideal climate, allthough we were told that it does get very humid in the summer. The Great Barrier Reef is on its doorstep, while inland there are old goldmining towns like Charters Towers, Further inland too is Mount Isa - one of the biggest current mining towns and enjoying a boom at the moment. Rob was able to join us for this part of the trip, and it was tremendous - although almost unreal - to see him walk into the airport arrivals hall after 8+ months away, looking fit, well and just the same as ever. Townsville itself has a tremendous sense of space and a slower, tropical , feel to it. There was a great view from our hotel across to Magnetic Island, ... read more

Oi! Over the last two days I have received packages all the way from America! I know this is not cheap since I have sent a package there myself, and it makes me feel very loved to know that postage rates wouldn't detour these people. The first package that arrived was from my brother, Marcus, he had a few things he meant to give me before I left but they didn't arrive in time for him to then send them onto me before I left for California. So he waited until I was safely in Australia, and then he thought that he couldn't just send me something so he asked me what things he could put in the package that the Robsons would like from America. Now the Australians’ don't have a thing on American cheese ... read more

It’s been a little bit quieter here at the Robson house this past week, but that all stops once the weekend hits! I relaxed and recovered from the Chillagoe trip during the week and wrote my 3 part blog, finished 2 books (and I am halfway through my third), posted a lot of my pictures to facebook (I have a few more albums to go, I have to do it when nobody is home since it slows the internet connection way down), and I can now try and get caught up with adding pictures to my past blogs. Then maybe I should be all caught up, but the thing is I really do like doing it all ☺ Friday night was my first real night out at a pub with Kieri Darrigan and her friends. I ... read more

It's been a bit quiet around here the past few days so not much to report until today except that I realized another odd thing about Australia while I was out for a jog this morning. The mailboxes are set into the front fenceline of all the houses (there isn't a house I have seen that does not have a fence around it) and the fence lines are set back from the road about 3 to 4 meters, so a mail truck can't just pull up and deposit the mail. Instead what I witnessed was a man on a very unofficial looking motor bike just pull up onto the grass in front of peoples houses and pull mail out of his pouches on the side of his bike. It is funny to just watch a guy ... read more

Another beautiful 80 degree day here in Townsville.  Heather says I am looking a bit tan! Which is quite a shocker since I never tan.  As much as I love the sun and the heat that comes with it, I can honestly say I have never been so happy to see clouds in my life.  The sun in the Tropics is just brutal and almost everyone wears a hat and/or sits under an umbrella if a pinch of shade cannot be found.   Today we are headed to the Billabong! From what the kids are telling me between squeals of excitement is that we all can get a chance to hold a Koala, Wombat (they say he is reallllll heavy :), and a Crocodile! You bet that I packed my camera (and one of these days ... read more

G'Day! I am getting my Australian lingo down a bit more with the more I talk to the natives and it hasn't hurt that Heather left a Australian slang book on my night stand ;) I am just going to put on my thongs and togs and take the eskie down to the billabong. Translated as I am going to put on my flip flops and bathing suit and take the cooler down to the estuary type thing. Speaking of billabongs, the kids can't wait to take me to the closest one. I believe we are going on Monday and while we are there we get to hold a Koala! Now, you have to be a certain height since Koalas do not like to be in what they feel like would be a bush, but if ... read more

Today was wonderful, for one I slept until 6 a.m, then I took the phone and walked outside in a tank top and shorts and called my Mom and the weather was perfect. Heather opens up all of the doors in the house to let the fresh air in first thing in the morning and it is quite something to just walk in and out of the house and on the veranda and not have to open any doors. Since Simon had to work Heather, the kids, and I hung out for most of the day. So we started off the day by going to one of Townsville's shopping centers. Now Australia wants everyone to stay in one place to shop so they put their grocery stores in their Mall. So you can buy your groceries ... read more

Heather and Simon had to work and the kids were still in school (their last day before Easter holiday) so Heather dropped me off at The Strand where I spent 6 hours laying on the beach and swimming.  It is a beautiful strip of beach in Townsville that th community had turned from a simple walking path into a beautiful place to play, walk, run, and swim. It has lots of open grassy parts as well where they hold concerts and events.  Since we are in the tropics there are a few rules to be learned, some of which the hard way. I had known from being on vacation with college friends that the sun is stronger and you need to apply a lot of sunscreen and often (my good friend Tiffany had the fairest skin ... read more

I landed in Townsville at 6 p.m,  my body really thought it was 6 a.m with the time change  but I didn't feel too bad!  Heather, Simon, and their two adorable kids Max and Emily all met me at the airport! I have not seen Heather and Simon since I was 12 back before they had children.  I couldn't stop thanking them for this wonderful opportunity and to let me know what I could do for them.  Heather and the kids had to leave since both kids were selected to play in a concert that night, and once I got my bags Simon and I were off to the concert as well.   Max, 8, was playing in his first concert and he had a solo! He plays the cello and I had a great time ... read more
