We stayed the night in Townsville and had a few hours in town before getting the ferry over to Magnetic Island where we hired a mini moke (which was painted pink and had Spongebob Squarepants on the front!) and zoomed off to Horseshoe Bay where our hostel was. It was like driving a cross between a giant go-kart and a dodgem, sooooo much fun, although I think I scared Lucy half to death. She later told me she did get a bit nervous when we were hurtling towards a blind bend and I yelled out 'where on earth is the gear stick on this thing?' When we finally got to our room in the hostel it was like a Turkish prison in need of some serious redecoration - bare concrete floor, saggy bed and no air-con ... read more

Nope I wasn't being stupid spoke to some truck driver who was nice guy, married with kids and he travelled back and forth the area. Needed to get back asap so jumped into truck. took 15hours to drive but now safe and sound in Brisbane and it was free and obviously gave Jess all information to be safe so no comments, learn't fair bit about life of a truckie which was fun. Spent loadsa time chatting on the radio to other people with radios. Everyone in Auusie on roads flash you if coming opposite direction to let you know there is a speed camera coming up. We should do that would be helpful. Leave Brisbane tomorrow and don't have time right now to put on photos but I'm very brown and seen some absolutely amazing things ... read more

After the Whitsundays, we took the bus up to Townsville, purportedly the world's largest tropical city, but more importantly home of the "Museum of Tropical Queensland" where we spent most the day we had there. The highlight of this excellent museum is the displays and artefacts from the wreck of the HMS Pandora, the ship sent to sail the south seas and round up, capture and bring the HMS Bounty mutineers back to mother England. Although successful in capturing a number of the 'pirates', the Pandora was wrecked on the barrier reef on her return voyage, but the story doesn't end there: there's also maroonings on a desert island, sailing tiny boats to the east indies, trials, royal pardons and hangings... The wreck, after being recently discovered by divers 30m down, is now protected by law ... read more

We have spent a couple of days here in Townsville before heading up to Cairns. We've had a look round the town - its not very big - and been to the sunday market. we bought lots of fresh salad and fruit. IMPORTANT FOOD ANNOUNCEMENT (as they all are): we bought avocados and i have eaten some! i'm not converted, but i wasnt sick. but no mum you cant put them in all food when i return! yesterday we spent at Magnetic Island which was very nice. we sunbathed on a beach for a couple of hours. and did a bit of walking to and from beach. we also went to another part of the beach and i collected quite a few shells - it reminded me of the time we went to cornwall. we had ... read more

There was no problem finding a backpackers' hostel in Townsville as the best one was right above the transit centre. For $9 (£4.50) you got a bed in a plush room with air conditioning, an evening meal, a beer, a bus service into town and a short tour. Like Cairns, Townsville was a nice little town and well worth a few hours just wandering round, relaxing and taking it in, but the main reason for going there is the nearby Magnetic Island. You can actually swim in the sea at Townsville as a net prevents the dreaded jellyfish from getting too near to the beach.... read more
