Australian Geography Australia is a big continent! It looks small on most maps because of the effect of transposing a circular surface onto a flat surface. The area of the continental U.S. and that of Australia is roughly the same, yet Australia is only divided into six States and two Territories. The State I spent the majority of my time, Queensland, stretches from N.C. to Canada, and inwards to Kansas City! However, Australia only has 20 million people (compared to 300 million in the U.S.), and only about 40 Universities (http://www.australian-universities.com/list/). North Carolina alone has about as many Universities (http://www.ibiblio.org/nc/nccollege.html) and that is excluding community colleges. Primary Education Education in the States and Australia is similar with a few key differences. One is language. "Kindergarten" in the States is the e... read more

Soooooo... We landed back in Brisbane, met Jason and James Barrett, wondered the river and art galleries, then headed South to Tara (Colettes friend). We then went to Byron Bay where we saw bands, had FREE Chai tea on the green with fire throwers and invited ourselves on a Tasmanian guy's STAG weekened do. It was brilliant. I did not realise how explicit strippers can be. We then got a lift with one of the guys up to the Sunshine Coast. Here we stayed with some great girls for 3 nights, watched films, did Yagolates and went to the beach. Next stop- rainbow beach for Fraser Island. We had the BEST time. It was Mhairis birthday and she drove most of the 1st day. Along the sand, beach, listening to top tunes. We were in a ... read more

After a few dramas we eventually were able to leave Cairns due to major flooding! We gave up and booked a flight and headed over to Magnetic Island! We took the ferry across which was so bumpy, it was throwing down with rain and generally very miserable! And it didnt change!! Arrived at our hostel to be told most of it wasnt working due to the cyclone and there was no tv room to waste the day from the rain - oh joy!! Luckily, on our second day we decided between 4 of us to hire and car and drive round the island! Which took all of ten minutes because you cant drive round all of it and there is pretty much only one road that you can!! However, the sun came out for some photos ... read more

Heading down the east coast our next stop was Townsville – since we had been roughing it up for a few days on the glamorous driver reviver stops we decided to treat ourselves to staying in an actual campsite for a couple of days! The campsite we checked into seemed like a bit of luxury with working showers, clean(ish!) toilets, a laundry and even a swimming pool! After taking advantage of our free pool we headed into the city centre to take care of some necessities, an hour later and we were fixed up with an Australian phone number, an Australian bank account and an Australian tax number – now we are pretty much fully fledged Aussies!! Aside from enjoying our great wee campsite and almost becoming Aussie citizens we actually really enjoyed Townsville as a ... read more

Well, it’s been a mental few months, full of highs, lows and planes. I know I am going to do my trip to the UK a dis-service by writing about it months after it happened but if you were there you already know how brilliant and if you were not you probably heard me go on about it. I left Townsville in a blaze of glory/ despair and made my flight by a cats whisker. I then had every day filled by friends, family and drama in the UK. Thanks to my family for their beaming faces when I walked out of arrivals, everyone who made the effort to come to the party, or took the day off just to hang out. 3 weeks was not long enough but I managed to pack in visiting half ... read more

As many readers may know, we had a category 5 cyclone (hurricane) rip through northeastern Queensland a week ago. My neighborhood alone lost over 100 trees. The only highway in and out of town is blocked, food supplies are sporadic, and over 7 million dollars of damage was done. Despite all this there is a lot of good news. For starters, no one died as a direct result of the cyclone, and most of the town recovered power and services within 48 hours. I've met nearly all of my neighbors, as we spent a couple of days cleaning debris together and chances are I'll meet some new friends when I go help clean up the University this weekend. Aside from those positives, there are other pleasant results of the cyclone. The dirt and dust shot up ... read more

I was expecting some big celebrations for Australia day, but saw nothing. Everyone just went to the 'Strand' which was a stretch by the beach with a few swimming and water features to play in. Didn't really do anything in Townsville it was just boring. My hostel was to far out of town, so didn't even bother to chillout by the beach.... read more

I sat upon my porch. Gazing over the distance. The sky a pale blue. Of summer dreams promised. A palm frawn danced idly. Its blade gyrating constantly. Clouds, unchanging, unmoving, consistent. Their borders lined gray. Fauna buzzed and chirped. Sleeping creatures waking for night. The red din approached. From a sun shortly disappeared. The earth sighed softly. As bread breaths after baking. SQUAAAAWWWCCCHHH Cockatoo. ... read more

I spend a lot of time blogging about those awesome adventures I get to go on, but I wanted to dedicate a little time to the everyday. If mostly because some people seem to be under the impression that I dive every weekend, run into common brown snakes every Tuesday, and generally live a life full of adventure. It's true, I am adventurous. But there's a lot of well needed and much appreciated down time between it all. Pets! I live with four pets; two dogs, Azgaurd and Komizar, a cat named tiger and a beta fish. Whose name and gender I don't actually know. Both dogs are puppies, although Komizar is about as tall as he is going to get. Each time I go outside to wash my laundry, or say hi to the dogs, ... read more

We were going to leave Townsville lots of times, but we were enjoying the rest so much that each morning we would wander over to reception and book another night. Travelling in Hilda is lots of fun but we had covered al ot of miles to make sure that we would get to Cairns in time for Christmas. Doing hundreds of kilometres every day can take it out of you. On Tuesday we finally left. We drove around Townsville looking for a tent and some chairs for Gemma and Kieran. Walking to the shops proved tricky for Andy. He has never been the greatest fan of flip flops, but out here there is no other option if you want to keep your feet cool and not wear Jesus creepers. Learning to walk in them has not ... read more
