Africa » Egypt November 23rd 2010

Why did I come to Egypt? Well I wanted to see the pyramids and the Nile. That's pretty much what everyone wants to see ... but I can tell you there's so much more to this place. And for someone like me who lives in a fairly well-off western country it's way too much of a culture shock. I am glad I came and saw what I wanted to, but I can tell you I never want to come back here (and I've never really said that about anywhere else). The most important point to make is about the people. They are very nice and friendly and will help you whenever you ask. There are always the ones trying to sell you things as you walk by but that is harmless ... you never get ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid November 14th 2010

Madrid was meant to be a chillout stop on my way to Egypt. I was here two years ago and liked it then, and this time around is no different. Five days was plenty of time to see the sites that I already knew of, and also some I didn't know about. I avoided doing the museum thing because I assumed the 400-year old paintings wouldn't really have changed since the last time I saw them. I wanted to do more of what the locals do, or at least try to, given that I have a new-found confidence with the Spanish language (I hope everyone knows I joking). I wanted to be able to go into a bar and order a bread roll with ham, and maybe an orange juice, without being looked at blankly. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada November 8th 2010

I have finished my bike ride through Andalucia and I'm so happy I decided to do it. I haven't done a lot of riding over the last few montths (well, ever actually), so finishing the route was a big thing for me. The gist of it is this ... seven days of cycling, 420km including some decent (for me) hills, nice sites along the way, and not having to use the support van once! The company I went with is called Cycling Country, and I can't speak highly enough of them. They've been doing this route for nearly six years and they knew exactly what and when to do something on the road. My tour was called Moorish Andalucia and it covered an area from Seville, up to Cordoba and over to Granada. We did ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville October 30th 2010

Well I can now say that my holiday has begun. It has a lot with not being able to understand anyone, and also having to wear a jumper and jeans. As much as I was looking forward to the A380 plane flight, it turns out not to be much different to any other plane. And from now on I am never getting a window seat on a long flight ... 14 hours cramped in the one seat was not much fun. I did get up once, and luckily the guy beside me was just as skinny as me, but it still made me vow to do things differently. The funny thing is, before we took off the hostess offered me a different seat, assuming I wouldn't want to do what I foolishly ended up doing. ... read more

Asia » Singapore October 25th 2010

Well it sure is humid in Singapore. People think that because you're from Townsville you can handle this type of weather, but they're wrong. I went out at seven o'clock in the morning and after ten minutes my head dripped with sweat ... oh well, this is almost on the equator. Finding my hotel was fun. The subway is really easy to use and took about 40 minutes to get into the city. The hotel is at Clarke Quay, which has lot of resturaunts and nightlife, but no one seemed to be able to give me directions. Plenty of those guys on bicycles with passenger carts who wanted my money, an English tourist who had only been here for one day, and a waitress who ended up pointing me in the complete opposite direction. Not much ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Townsville September 23rd 2010

Well if there is anyone out there who doesn't know that I'm going away, now you know. I may have left it to the last minute to pack, but I really did think I had plenty of space to use. I got a bit worried last night when I had to sit on my case to zip it up, but everything eventually went in. Hopefully there is a map on the top of this blog entry that shows where I'm going. Essentially it will be Singapore, Spain, Egypt, London, Argentina and Antarctica. A bit of hot and a lot of cold... hard to pack for trips like this. The aim is to get lots of awesome photos, have a nice bike ride, see some pyramids and not get and gastro. I'll try and put some ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome October 21st 2008

Another train and another easy trip. Europe is so compact and relatively easy to get around. I arrived in Rome before midday, so I found somewhere to have lunch. Now, when I think of Italy, I think of yummy pasta, but this assumption has been shattered due to the dodgy pasta I had at a cafe. It was some half-heated oily mess, which I think ever I could have done better than. Sooo, I just had to force myself to wash it down with an icecream (very rare on this trip, I know). Now if there is something the Italians know how to do, it's serving up massive, yummy icecream cones at a fairly cheap price. Thumbs up to Luigi! I then had a look at Villa Borghese (a park), the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the ... read more

You'd think after getting so many trains on my trip I'd be fairly good at it by now. I caught the train from Interlaken to Spiez okay, which took about 20 minutes. The next train was from Spiez to Milan, which I also caught okay. The only problem was that I got on at the wrong end of the train. When you reserve a ticket, the carriage number is printed on the ticket. At the station, there are signs that indicate where on the platform your carriage will be. Somehow I didn't manage to follow those signs and boarded carriage eight ... a long way from my allocated carriage two. Distance-wise it's not that far, but when you are lugging a backpack around and trying to navigate a narrow aisle with people's legs hanging out, it ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken October 11th 2008

I got a 9am train fro Lucerne and made it into Interlaken at about 11am. Even though Switzerland is a small country, having to cross the mountains by train makes it a bit slower than usual (yes, I know that's obvious). Interlaken literally means "between lakes", with Lake Brienz to the east and Lake Thun to the west. The thing I noticed most about the lakes when passing them in the train was the colour of the water. It is a really nice light blue or aqua colour, and although I'm no geologist or hydrologist, I thought it may have something to do with a mineral in the water. Interlaken itself is a fairly small town, with most shops being on the main street. The main tourist season is in their summer so I was lucky ... read more
