Every day at a restaurant called On The Inlet overlooking the river they feed a fishhead or chicken to a wild fish called George The Grouper. He comes of his own accord most nights at 5pm, and a large crowd gathers to watch. They tie a rope around the fishhead or chicken, and try to pull George to the surface so people can see him. He's about the size of a volkswagon - yes, a small car. These photos don't do him justice - its hard to get a good photo. But believe me - this is the biggest fish you've ever seen. Huge.... read more

The drive from Carins to Port Douglas along the coast was amazing. It is appaently the second best coastal drive in Australia and it really was breathtaking. It didnt take long to drive to Port Douglas and as we got there we realised it is only a very small place. We found a campsite very close to town and also on the 4 mile beach. Got organised in the afternoon and booked our Great Barrier Reef trip for tomorrow. Then headed onto the beach to do a walk up the headland, no swimming here as we are now entering crocodile country so the ocean is out of bounds! The trip to the reef started early with a 1 1/2 hour boat ride out to the pontoon in the middle of the ocean, we chose to do ... read more

Today I went on a free trip to the Daintree area with Down Under Tours. Got picked up and driven to Mossman Gorge where we went on a 90 minute walk/talk with the Kuku Yalanji aboriginal people. We learned quite a lot about their history and stories, and saw how they collected food and made paint out of natural plants. It was very interesting. We then moved on to a fabulous place called Silky Oaks Lodge, where you can stay or just go to eat. It's lot of beautiful buildings set in lush rainforest on the banks of the Mossman River, and all buildings are pole houses set high in the treetops. It's really lovely with fantastic food. After lunch here, we went on a croc spotting cruise on the Daintree River before heading home via ... read more

I cant believe it is over a month since i last updated this blog! Sorry everyone who has been following my travels. Well i have now completed my east coast adventure and head back to Brisbane tomorrow to try and find myself some work. The east coast has been great from seeing all the native animals at the Australia Zoo when i was in Noosa, feeding the dolphins at Tin Can Bay, the sunset from the sandblow at Rainbow Beach, all the sights of Fraser Island - dingos fishing in the sea, the beautiful lakes Birrabeen and Wabby, Indian Heads, Eli Creek and the Hammerstone Sandblow and not forgetting the fabulous group i was travelling with on the guided tour of Fraser Island, Bob and Margaret's hospitality in Bagara, news that Hayley got hitched!, motoring aroung ... read more

Today is Anzac day so instead of working I managed to get a free trip to the reef on a boat called Calypso. Now that I'm working at the hostel I get to go on all the tours for free, because I need to know what the tour is like to be able to sell it to our guests. So it was such a great day! Got picked up at 8.30am by Andy, and we went to the boat. Things are really quiet here still so there were only 12 people on board - they can take 100 so I was very lucky. Our skipper was Chris and Katie was the snorkle guide. I decided to go diving for the first time, and I ended up being the only diver, so I had one on one ... read more

This morning I got up early and caught the local bus to the Rainforest Habitat. I met my friend Ella there, and we first had breakfast with the birds, and then joined a few walking/feeding tours and then wandered around on our own. It's a huge bird aviary with loads of strange birds, some koalas, crocs, roos and wallabys. I was there for 5 hours in total and had a great time. I tried to name the birds in the photos but it's costing me to use the computer and there's too many birds to name them all!... read more
