Well, after 5.5 hours to Hawaii, 90 minute stopover there, 11 hours to Sydney, 3 hour stopover there, 3 hours to Cairns, and a 1 hour drive to Port Douglas, I arrived safely at Tropical Reef Apartments and Sarah and Chris greeted me with a cold beer. 27 hours of travel and I had survived. I thought my many trips to Ulsan, South Korea and Aberdeen, Scotland would have prepared me for this long journey but I know realize that those trips are small in comparison to my journey to Australia. My first afternoon/night here was very uneventful. We had dinner at 5pm (the early senior special) and I was sound asleep in bed by 7pm. I made it through till about 3am and I was up for about 1 hour before falling asleep until 7am. ... read more

Took a bus up to Mossman Gorge this morning- a little river that runs through the rainforest amongst these massive round boulders. It was a really pretty place. It was one of those times I was glad to be on my own. I managed to climb up and sit on one of the boulders and it was like being at one with creation just sat there watching the perch and the butterflies. I saw what I thought was a snake but which turned out to be a big lizard thing which was pretty cool. Then went for a swim in the river- it was FREEZING but after 2 minutes you could just about breathe. I felt like I was in a timotei shampoo advert swimming around in the middle of the rainforest. Tried to video myself ... read more

Had a beautiful drive up to Port Douglas- the road has some amazing views. Past Palm Cove Becky- it looked wonderful but we didnt stop. Got to PD for lunch time, hostel - Port o'Call- is nice, quite big and not really like a hostel at all-got lots of individual rooms aswell. Took a walk into town via the marina- house boat for sale, ummm, tempting! Beautiful little church called St Mary's- apparently they have at least one wedding there everyday! Sat down by here and painted a watercolour of the jetty and a big storm cloud passing by. Luckily it didnt come inland. Its just bliss to have time to do this kind of thing. Had meal at night in the Bistro at the hostel- fantastic food. Ordered a shank of lamb and got two!! ... read more

Went out to Low Isles today to do some snorkelling on the reef- had the most amazing time! Got really confused with all the options of different reefs and boats and stuff, and then this nice woman came up to me and told me about this one that she had been on with her family and so I booked it. It was a sailing boat and it took about an hour to get out to low isles- a tiny little island with a lighthouse on it. I spent most of the time snorkelling which I confess took me ages to get the hang of - I thought I was gonna suffocate at first!!! And I just gave up on the flippers- I swim breaststroke so it just doesnt work! What on earth are they for anyway? ... read more

tuesday was my last day in port douglas :( so, of course, i was on the beach by 9.00am and spent the whole day sunning myself and swimming in the beautifully clear, warm sea! (are ya all jealous?!) had the nicest time, didn't see a cloud all day, and in the evening i went out for dinner and a few drinks with the girls from my room. was a really good last day, and in all honesty i was totally gutted to be moving on. i think i could have quite happily stayed in port douglas for weeks and weeks on end!!! still, that isn't the point of travelling, or so i'm led to believe :) on thursday morning i walked up to the look out point in port douglas - there are some amazing views ... read more

I went scuba diving! on the great barrier reef! and saw big fishies!!!! so yeah, i went scuba diving, which was brilliant fun! didn't even get sea sick :) we left the marina at port douglas at about 8.45 and i believe that it took us about 1 and a half hours to get to agincourt reef (part of the great barrier reef). there were maybe about 100 people on the boat and there were only 20 of us doing actually scuba diving, the rest were snorkelling or just there for the ride i guess :) us scuba diver type people were briefed on the way out there and given basic safety training/skills that we had to take on board. then we had to kit up - blimey, i didn't realise just how heavy all that ... read more

hellooooo!!! well, saturday was super fun! i hired a car with bex and celia (two girls from tasmania) and we drove up to cape tribulation. cape tribulation is an area about 50km north of here maybe (not too good with the whole distance thing!) in an area called the daintree national park. its the only place in the whole big wide world where the rainforest actually meets the sea. its the most amazingly beautiful area. on the way up you have to cross the daintree river via a little mini ferry that literally takes about 2 minutes. we went on the dubuji boardwalk which is a 2km walk through the rainforest to myall beach. alas, we saw no crocodiles, cassowaries (evil dinosaur like 2m tall birdies that have a blue head and can disembowel you with ... read more

was so glad to be leaving alice springs the day after i got back from the camping safari - don't think i could have spent another day there!!! my flight to cairns (this is tuesday) was bumpy. really really bumpy :( lindsey was not happy and lindsey felt rather queasy despite wearing rather good acupressure bands that usually work. so i managed to sleep for the duration of the flight, yay! all 2 and a half hours of it, which is quite impressive i think, considering there was the most annoying child sat behind me for the duration who thought it was super fun to kick my chair. ah well! like i say, it made little different, i think the camping and 24km of walking took it out of me a bit :) oooh, freaky - ... read more
