Well, we've finally made it to Australia... and its good to be somewhere where everyone speaks English and there are familiar things around after 3 months away! We arrived in Cairns last week, and after a few days looking around and deciding where on earth to start with such a huge country, we headed north to Port Douglas - a small town on the coast which is fairly sleepy at the moment as its low tourist season. Its also supposed to be wet season too, but we've luckily only had a couple of really rainy days. We've spent two days out on the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling and Scuba Diving and have seen some amazing fish and colourful corals, as well as Giant Turtles, loads of Reef Sharks, huge Tuna and little Clown Anenome Fish (or ... read more

So onto the next part of our crazy adventure...... Our plan was put on hold by the arrival of Cyclone Larry in Cairns on the day of our flight. This was a serious cyclone (Category 4) and has caused lots of damage though luckily no casualties. We managed to change our flight to the Whitsunday Islands (several hundred miles further down the coast.) We flew into Hamilton Island (where Los lived and worked while she was here!) but it was a bit classy for us so we caught the ferry to Airlie Beach - backpacker town on the mainland. This was going to be the high point of the trip and I'd been looking forward to turquoise beaches and white sands but sadly the weather was pretty awful due to the after effects of the cyclone. ... read more

Voila!! Rented a super duper wicked now named Kissey and drove her along the nice roads up to Port Douglas...Only 60 kms north of Cairns, this little city seems to be the getaway for the rich and famous with heaps of big resorts! Not quite the backpackers usual surroundings but hey, after all, we sleep in the van so who needs a big suite with a balcony? I cooked excellent pastas on the propane stove and it actually turned out to be quite good and lots of fun to cook outside! It's like camping but better!! :) Not a lot of night life though for a saturday night. Didn't end up partying much but I have the rest of the east coast to do so! So what's next? Either going up to Cape Tribulation or going ... read more

Well we finally see the ocean again and hit the east cost of Cairns!!! Cairns is a lovely town, very popular with tight arse backpackers like ourselves, so it's right up our street!!! The only downside is we arrived mid rainy season, and when I say rainy, non stop torrential raining for a week. With non stop rain, heat still early 30's, and 90% humidity, you can imagine the sweathole our camper was in!! We tried to escape the rain and headed north slightly to a gorgeous little town called Port Douglas. Albeit, the rain still followed! We stuck around for a few days, taking in some of the fantastic sights. Just a wee shame the weather was not on our side!... read more

Leaving Sydney… Dejana dropped us off at the airport at 7:00 pm, and we were a little concerned that we would miss our flight (at 7:35 pm). We were rushed through priority check-in though and were waiting at our gate at 7:15 pm. However, an announcement came on and said that our flight would be delayed by an hour and a half (which turned out to be two hours). We found out that our plane got hit by lightning en route from Brisbane and they had to check it out to make sure everything was okay to fly again. Very reassuring. We arrived in Cairns at midnight. We were dead tired by this point, but we still had an hour trip to Port Douglas to get to our accommodations. I could hardly keep my eyes open, ... read more

Hello again. Hot and sticky in Port Douglas with yet more new software for dealing with photos. Fingers crossed - if not will try again next week - maybe my friends in Brisbane will have the facilities.... Great time in the Flinders last week - really enjoyed the peace and quiet and some walking. Driving around was good - so nice to have some independence. ... read more

Well, I must apologise. For some reason the pictures don't seem to have come out so well this time, especially the ones of me on the train! I was there, honestly. Today's lesson is not to use the Kodak software. Travelling produces lessons on a regular basis - trying to see it like that saves stress anyway. If I get a chance I'll redo them. So, time for the East coast now. I admit to feeling a bit daunted by it, lots of youngsters everywhere (!) and loads of Brits apparently. It is low season up here in northern Queensland so things are (relatively) quiet - still a shock after the beautiful peaceful Flinders Ranges down in Southern Australia. I am coming to the conclusion that I am more of a mountains woman than a beach type ... read more

Port Douglas I completed three dives on the Australian Great Barrier Reef on Friday October 21st. All three dives were fantastic, especially the last one. So many different types of fish to see. On the second dive, there were 5 foot reef sharks in the water with us. They were quite tame and swam around us. The tour group shot a video of us and Sarah and I purchased it to show all those who doubt that I was diving. As well, I have pictures to show everyone. Of course in typical Sarah and Nancy fashion, we left the DVD in Port Douglas, but luckily the hotel is mailing the DVD to Sarah in Ottawa. Cairns On Saturday we checked out of the hotel in Port Douglas and we headed on a one hour bus ride ... read more

Hot and humid - that's the way it's been for the last week up here in northern Queensland. I guess that's to be expected! We flew up to Cairns from Brisbane and then went directly to a nice two-bedroom apartment in Port Douglas (1 hour further north) for five days. Port Douglas is a beautiful small town with a lot of attractions. The town was built for tourism, but it still has a lot of charm. Thanks so much Sheryl for giving us the advice to stay in Port Douglas instead of Cairns - we did end up staying in Cairns for two nights, and it is not nearly as nice (to put in mildly)! We arrived in Port Douglas on a Monday and Chris and I both alternated doing a quick 2 hour snorkelling trip ... read more

Well a swimming and diving trip into the rainforrest south of Cairns yesterday- an amazing trip - infact the best organised trip weve been on yet. Jumping and sliding down waterfalls/ bum surfing and crocodile searching - will explain more tomorrow but for now onto Rob for todays briefing! Rob_ Today we were up at 6am for a coach trip down to Port Douglas, to catch the SILVER SWIFT (new boat) to the great barrier reef. Fantastic sunny day ideal for diving and snorkling. Boarded the boat for breakfast and set sail for the reef some 1 hr away. 1st stop. Dave and myself were first into the water, without wet suits, bad idea because 20mins later I was stung by a jelly fish on the shoulder and arm. Fantastic dive with great coral beds, and ... read more
