Sarah and Nancy before dive #1
Port Douglas

I completed three dives on the Australian Great Barrier Reef on Friday October 21st. All three dives were fantastic, especially the last one. So many different types of fish to see. On the second dive, there were 5 foot reef sharks in the water with us. They were quite tame and swam around us. The tour group shot a video of us and Sarah and I purchased it to show all those who doubt that I was diving. As well, I have pictures to show everyone. Of course in typical Sarah and Nancy fashion, we left the DVD in Port Douglas, but luckily the hotel is mailing the DVD to Sarah in Ottawa.

Cairns

On Saturday we checked out of the hotel in Port Douglas and we headed on a one hour bus ride south to Cairns. In Cairns, we decided to go with a buget hotel and budget it was. The toilet was leaking, the place was not that clean, we needed to be in the hotel by dinner time as the streets of Cairns were not the nicest in the world, and on Monday morning just before we checked out Sarah saw a crockroach

in the bathroom.

On our first night in Cairns, Chris and I were responsible for finding dinner. On the way to the local IGA, we stumbled upon a bar that was having a happy hour 2 for 1. Chris and I had to visit it and well dinner was a bit late that evening. The hotel in Cairns was also only one room, whereas the apartment in Port Douglas was 2 bedrooms. So when Nathan went to bed at 7pm, we all were in bed reading with flashlights or on the balcony reading. I think the latest I made it up till was 8:30pm.

On our second day in Cairns, we took a try ride up through the rainforest, The train ride was about 90 minutes long, no AC and it was above 30C and it was VERY muggy. By the time the ride was over, we were all in need of some AC. The train took us to a village (Kuranda) where we ate lunch ($30 for nachos and 2 pops) but at least the place had AC and Nathan could cool down a bit. For the way back to town, we took a 45 minute cable

ride through the rainforest, the views were unbelievable. We spent the afternoon lying around the hotel pool.

On Monday morning, we left Cairns and hopped on a 2 hour plane ride to Brisbane. We are in Brisbane for the next 2-3 days and then we are heading south to Bryon Bay. We plan on hitting the Australian zoo tomorrow.

glad you are having fun
Great photos looks like you are having a tonne of fun. The picture of the water taxi in Brisbane looks as though it could have been taken from Granville Island, though I am sure it was much warmer. Keep enjoying your time. Paul

Great photos
You sound like you are having a fantastic time - I am very jealous. When I go to Australia I hope to be able to dive too (sometime in the next 50 years). Have fun with the family!

Looks like fun!
Hey Nancy! Sounds like you're having a blast with the travelling family all the way on the other side of the world. As I haven't seen you in ages, it's great to see pictures of you as well! Cheers, Mrudula
