We have been staying at Port Douglas, almost in town at Four Mile Beach. Yesterday we had lunch on the wharf, overlooking the very smart boats moored there and had a good look around the area, especially up to the lookout. Today, as every Sunday, the markets were held down on the waterfront. They are quite big and full of lots of goodies - tropical fruits, beautiful plants .. how I wish I could have bought some of the cheap orchids there but would they survive the long trip home? ... clothing, jewellery - all sorts of interesting things. We spent quite a long time there, even though it was hot. It's quite humid and though we've had hot weather for months, the humidity is something new for us. There was an interdenominational service in the ... read more

Another reason for coming to Port Douglas was because we are celebrating our 15th anniversary of meeting. Coincidentally, we had been in the same part of the world (Mission Beach) in 2005 for our 11th anniversary - you may remember, it being the second time the weather prevented us from Skydiving... This year, for obvious reasons, we had planned a much more sedate day. We started by having side-by-side massages at a local spa - relaxation for Em, deep tissue sports for Tim... Afterwards we grabbed a coffee from 'Re:Hab' which was purportedly the best coffee in town. We found out why - they served supreme coffee, a NZ roast, and therefore understandably better than any Aussie brew... We had planned to spend the afternoon on the beach (as so far we had had no beach ... read more

Day 103 - The Great Barrier Reef Up with the kookaburras again, except there aren’t any here which is a bit of a shame! We’re off to the reef again today and we’re hoping the wind will have dropped off out there as it’s been 25 knots for the last two days! The coach is picking us up at 7.25am but the driver’s early and we’re still walking down the hill when Dennis runs up to make sure we’re awake! Technically we’re not late though, phew! We’re booked on the Quicksilver ‘Silversonic’ boat and soon realise that the Quicksilver company must own most of the boats in the Port Douglas marina, certainly the big tour ones anyway! We think there are 80 people on the boat with us today and we’re visiting three reef sites within ... read more

Day 102 - Port Douglas and around So, there really are two 5 o’clocks in a single day! Yet another early morning start this morning and we were treated to the moon still high in the sky followed by sunrise over the Daintree River! We were booked on a river cruise this morning with Mick and we had just under an hours drive to get from the campsite to the jetty for 6.30am! These pesky birds that get up so early, makes it all very interesting!! The river cruise was excellent, just the two of us and a bloke called Mick who drove us around for 3 hours watching the wildlife float, fly and slither by! We saw so many different species of birds, heard a multitude of new birds voices which was fabulous, got up ... read more

It wasn't until today (10th August) that we realised we'd forgotten to upload this blog! Whoopsie but here it is! Day 101 - Day trip to Daintree & Cape Tribulation DASH tours is off again this morning, heading for another day in the rainforest but this time it has a twist, we’re going to one of the only places in the world where reef and rainforest meet! These World Heritage listed areas are very special and you could spend weeks here let alone a day so our trip will be just enough to give us a flavour of this magical world and hopefully we’ll like the taste! We reach the Daintree Ferry with perfect timing, it’s just on the way back to us so we have enough time to take a photo and then we’re boarding ... read more

Day 100 - Day trip to Cooktown - 690 kms with 110 kms on the Battlecamp Road Ok, so it might have appeared that we were having a bit of a moan about the weather not always being particularly warm and that sometimes the nights are quite cold? I think for the time being that period in our life is over and we are now in balmy nights for sure! No need for a doona here! We’ll have to start reading the temperature gauge on a regular basis but right now, in the caravan and 20:52 it’s 25 degrees so it’s looking like it will be another warm one! So, this morning we headed off on our day trip to Cooktown and the surrounding area! We were a bit slower leaving than we’d hoped but there ... read more

Day 99 - Crystal Cascades to Port Douglas There was a very unusual activity in the caravan at 4am this morning, awakeness! We’d arrange a Skype session with Ed, Gos, Em, Ray and Lisa because they were all meeting up for a meal to celebrate Gos turning 38 (I originally wrote 39 here which prompted the comment by wife Em! I've changed it now to 38 and made myself a year younger in the process! Sar) (thought I’d get that in!) but unfortunately for us they are meeting either at 5pm or 7pm which meant we had to be up at either 2am or 4am! We chose the later and duly set the alarm! It was great to catch up and we’d welcome other Skype or phone contact from anyone who wants a UK time MORNING ... read more

Went to Kuranda and looked around the markets and up and down the streets. Then we went to the train station and Skyrail terminal. We bought tickets to ride the Skyrail from Kuranda to Caravonica (near Cairns). On the way down, we stopped at Barron Falls and Red Peak. At the bottom we had an ice cream whilst waiting for Mum’s taxi to pick us up. We went into Cairns and walked along the foreshore and marina. We had a look at the Cairns Night Markets - lots of Chinese imports, Chinese massages and Chinese food. Went to the Port Douglas markets and I saw some coconut faces (which remind Dad of Iain - only joking). I really liked them, so I bought one and Mum & Dad bought one called the House Protector. We are ... read more

A full day in Port Douglas, and its time to hit the beach. We walked across the road and explored the local suburbs as the beach was very near, we just weren't quite sure exactly where it was. Eventually we found the beach path and came out onto a tropical beach, complete with coconuts. The braver amongst us ventured out for a swim, it was pretty hot and the forecast was for 29C. Certainly things dried very quickly once we came out. After that we went into the town and had some lunch and stocked up with drink and essentials. We then went back to the villa and chilled out a bit while the sun was at its hottest and had an ice cream. Then later on we went out to the other side ofr Port ... read more
