Sitting in cloudy Port Douglas fresh back from a three or four mile stroll down the beach, the dulcet snores from Antony thrumming from the driver’s seat next to me. Some awful creature has taken it upon itself to drink blood straight from my knee bone: the raised wound there is pulsing in a most unseemly fashion. It’s 12:49pm on Saturday. Brazil are out. So are Ghana. Ha. Feel the pain, suckers! The majority of the World is now either sulking or gloating. Only six nations left with hope in their hearts. Far be it from me to join the gloaters and sulkers, but ha! That’s it for Brazil and Ghana. Curse that referee for not allowing Lampard’s goal to count. With hindsight, I think we would have won that game if that goal had stood. ... read more

Mum and Dad visited for a week with their friends Elsie and Nigel. It was great to have them here, and we explored the area quite a lot. We went for walks on 4 Mile Beach, hired a pontoon boat and spotted crocs on Dickson Inlet, drove to Herberton Historic Village, and generally had a great time. It was sad to see them go - I'd been looking forward to seeing them for so long.... read more

This will be as far north as our caravan will travel, a short but very pictureskew road made a fantastic drive to Port Douglas, and our week here is shaping up to be a fantastic one. The start of World Cup football (not soccer), State of Origin 2, and yes, Steve’s birthday. Though when that paragraph was written, in the present tense, it is really the past tense because the first part of the blog is being penned on Wednesday 16 June. We arrived early Sunday and take a stroll into Port Douglas for the markets. Steve manages to stop Debby buying more jewellery by promising a refreshing cup of sugar cane juice - hey not bad - and Deb makes a colourful friend. We get ourselves weighed and WOW, either the scales are wrong or ... read more

So today I went on a free trip to Low Isles with Sailaway. The Low Isles are only about 30-45 minutes out of Port Douglas, and all the boats going to the outer Great Barrier Reef pass them every day. Sailaway is an amazing 5 star luxuary catamaran which sails out daily so you can hang out on the beach and go snorkling for the day. Its a great option for those with small children who can't keep the kids on a boat all day, or people who want to snorkle but aren't sure about the deep water at the outer reef (because you can snorkle off the beach here). It was a lovely windy day so we were moving pretty quick, and I sat up on the top with the skipper the whole way there ... read more

We had to switch sites in our latest caravan park in Cairns. Why? Because the huge tree above us came into bloom. And with the flowers came hundreds of rainbow lorikeets who feed on the nectar. We didn't mind them - they go to sleep (and go quiet) at dark every night. But what bothered us was the fruit bats we could see crawling around the flowers at dusk. They're so huge and we (okay, Barry) didn't want to have to climb up onto the motorhome roof to wash off guano before we take it back. We spent several days in Cairns enjoying the town and the golf courses. The town isn't very busy at all. Everybody keeps telling us that we planned our trip just right getting to the tropics in winter. Sometimes we get ... read more

Hello hello! Wochenende gut ueberstanden?!?

So today I finally qualified as an Open Water Diver. It means I can dive to 18 metres and don't need an instructor with me. It seemed like it took ages to finish, because I did it over a month or so when I wasn't at work. There were exams and skills to do in the pool first and then on the reef, which you had to do to show the instructor you could do on your own. Things like removing water from your mask underwater, or removing your mask altogether and then putting it back on again underwater, and being able to get air from your dive buddy if you air supply stops for some reason. I've been out once since I qualified and was paired with a stranger because you need to dive with ... read more

After surviving the Northern Territory and the worst hostel in the world (a whole other naked Russian man in bathroom story), ive made it to the East Coast and life has returned to normal. Port Douglas is a small town north of Cairns where ive been re-charging my batteries and hitting the beach. Managed to book myself on a day tour where i was the only passenger, except The Hoffman's. As Dick Hoffman introduced himself, his wife Barb and their moody teenage son Mikey, i knew i was in for a long day. As it turns out they were highly entertaining and i now have an adoptive family in Miami and the services of a very prestigious attorney if needs be! We went Jungle Surfing, hire wiring above the canopy of the Daintree Rainforest, the only ... read more

Bin seit 28. ... read more

Every year Port Douglas has a 10 day festival called Carnivale (that's Carn-e-varl - don't get it wrong or you'll be corrected). Last weekend there was a big street parade which I missed because I was working, and there's been events on all week - most of which cost loads of money so I didn't go to them either. But today was a family fun day on the beach, so I wandered down (less than a block from home) to have a look. There was a sand castle building competition, camel rides, beach cricket, swimming, kite surfing lessons, and 3 guys leapt out of a helicpopter and parachuted to the beach, closely followed by the helicopter, a yacht race and outrigger canoe race. It was a beautiful day, so I took some photos of all the ... read more
