G'day mates, how're goin? As you can see we are picking up the lingo good style! Fair dinkum! We've been out snorkelling at the Great barrier reef. it was amazing. Despite sun factor of 30+. we still managed to get burnt. Will be taking it very easy for the next couple of days. Mum even got her hair wet. Weather is about 30c. I don't know what the weather is in UK but I should think its cold and wet. Port Douglas is a lovely place , only a small town but plenty of bars and restaurants.Having a minor problem with the transfer up to Cape Tribulation but hopefully it will be sorted tomorrow. The hotel gave us a bottle of bubbly yesterday for our anniversary which was nice. We went into town and ate at ... read more

Today was my day off work, so I decided to take a ride on one of the boats I sell at work. The Sailaway Sunset Sail is an hour and a half sail to watch the sun set, and I was lucky enough to get a great night for it.... read more

As some of you may know, one of my more far fetched travel goals includes swimming in each ocean. On Saturday, I swam for the first time in the Pacific Ocean at one of the reefs along the Great Barrier Reef off Port Douglas. (If you're gonna go go big!) I knew what to expect at the reef - bright colors, an incredible diversity of fish and invertebrates, warm waters, and crystal clear views. But nothing really prepared me for how spectacular the reef would be. Despite studying aspects of its diversity and ecology for four years at UNCW, watching documentary after documentary showcasing the reefs most elusive and colorful inhabitants, I was absolutely stunned the moment the reef was visible from the boat. For starters, the Great Barrier Reef spans along most of Queensland on ... read more

It's been a bit drizzly here today after heavy rain last night. We had to go to Cairns to have the brakes seen to so we spent the time in the mall, out of the rain and in air conditioning, had our lunch there, then picked up the motor home - all done - and we're now we're back at Port Douglas. We've enjoyed our time here. Sunday we went to the markets, always good. Tropical fruits and plants to buy, paintings, clothes, massages, jewellery, it's all there. As is the whole of this top area, it was crowded. There is always a service at the same time at St Mary's by the Sea, the little interdenominational church at the edge of the markets and the little church is always packed. Yesterday we walked a little ... read more

We had a fabulous time at Cairns. The Coconut Resort caravan park was such a great place, we've stayed there before but this is the first time we've used their facilities. I washed in their laundry, dried clothes on their lines, jumped on their jumping pillow, swam in their pool, shopped in their shop and bought fish and chips from their little bistro. We didn't play tennis, volley ball, mini golf, ride skateboards or bikes there, nor did we play in their adventure playground or games room but all in all we had a great time. We loved their little water park and watching the children have a ball there. It was a concoction of slippery slides, canons, and all sorts of twirly things, all having water coming out of them, down them, across them. Our ... read more

We awoke early so packed up and got on the road at 8.30 am. We said goodbye to Peter, Ian and Christine who were flying back to Canberra. Doreen was still in Townsville and they were unsure when she would be able to be flown back to Canberra for her funeral. They all just wanted to go home. As we left the weather was overcast and began to rain heavily as we started going north. The road was dreadful - slow caravans and trucks with big potholes everywhere. The road was collapsing for most of the trip due to inadequate maintenance and funding. It was an extremely dangerous road, and at one point a Road Train was going so fast that it threw up so much water that we were engulfed in a wave of water ... read more

After enjoying 5 nights at pretty Clifton Beach we headed north along the Captain Cook Highway for about an hour to Port Douglas. Our home for the next 4 nights was called "At the Mango Tree Holiday Apartments" - not sure why it's not just called "Mango Tree" but anyway... Not the flashest of establishments and only selected because there wasn't a lot of other options available. Turned out to be quite good, with a tennis court, nice pool and across the road to the beach. It looked like half of Australia is in town for the school holidays - Port Douglas was just humming with people. The main Street, Macrossan St was very pretty and packed with lots of shops, tour offices, cafes and restaurants. The kids favourite was the bright green icecream shop selling ... read more
