This morning was once again rain. You think we'd be used to it by now! Oh well, we headed down to the Port Douglas markets. Unfortunately because of the rain lots of stalls decided not to set up. There were still a few there to have a look at. Saw some pretty cool things. One man was there making sugar cane juice because there is sooooo much sugar cane in this area and down the east coast. Mom ended up buying herself a little something from one stall that uses wood from the rainforest. Well, it started to really pour and we didn't bring our umbrellas so I threw my rain jacket on and made a mad dash for the car to get the umbrellas for mom and dad. Dad ended up buying a boomerang from ... read more

Its raining again Sunday - day of rest We went to get our laundry dry before we move on to Hamilton Island early tomorrow morning. We then went into town to do a little shopping and visit the Port Douglas Sunday Market, it is mainly local produce and very little as regards souvenirs etc. We have skipped breakfast and we decide to take an early lunch at the old Court House. We then got the Sunday paper, mags and some munchies and went back to the hotel for a snooze and "slob-out" and watch some TV movies. We are getting tired of the persistent rain now. We have walked through so much water that we are starting to develop webs between our toes. With all the water about the mosquitoes are also making a comeback and ... read more

Woke up to even more rain! Diane decided to catch up on her washing and went to the sister hotel to use the laundrette We then went into town to get a late breakfast and have another look around. We ate breakfast at the Coffee Grind on the main street. Just as we left the cafe the rain came on even heavier, we had to shelter for some time before we could move on. We did a bit of shopping and I investigated the location of a restaurant that I am thinking of visiting for dinner this evening. We then went back to the hotel and waited for a break in the weather, that never really came. I was told that our trip to the Kuranda Scenic Railway will not happen on Sunday due to the ... read more

It is still raining!. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant (with part of the floor flooded!) and decide to take a walk into town, just a few minutes from the hotel. We walked down the main street, it becomes obvious that we are visiting Port Douglas out of season. We go to look at the beach (Four mile beach). The seawater is a brown colour not the blue that we been used to, and there is a lot of vegetation flotsam and jetsam on the beach. We are not sure if this is the result of the recent cyclone. There is a notice warning of stingers, jellyfish and crocodiles that makes a visit to the beach far from inviting!. It is still raining! We returned to the hotel and ate lunch there. The hotel does not have ... read more

We caught our airport shuttle bus early in the morning up to Cairns. We were off to do our big east coast adventure! We left a mild weathered Melbourne and it was like stepping off the plane in Thailand in Cairns. The humidity just hit you straight away. We picked up our bags and got our rental car. We decided with the 3 of us it worked out better having a car and driving ourselves down to Sydney. Dad drove us into Cairns for a quick lunch and then down to the waterfront. Cairns has a free lagoon pool right on the waterfront that you can swim in. We put our feet in and it was awesome! The water was the perfect temperature. We didn't have time to go swimming unfortunately. We walked down the boardwalk ... read more

Hello again family and friends! Well I made it safely to Cairns via a couple of hours in a Sydney pub with a lovely guy from South Africa - no wedding bells, don't get excited! People just come and talk to you if you are on your own and before you know it it's time to head back to the airport. I arrived at Cairns airport and was greeted by the first of many bugs I would meet in Tropical North Queensland. I realised I was in trouble given that I don't really like bugs of any kind let alone tropical ones (more on this topic later). Anyway the bus transfer to my hotel was quite terrifying. It was dark, I was tired, there was evidence that the area had been hit by the edge of ... read more

On Tuesday we went to the Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas where the staff were getting ready for the cyclone which was heading our way. We were due to fly out on Wednesday morning and the cylclone was due to hit some time Wednesday night so we thought we would be OK. We saw tawny frogmouth birds (not owls), cassowaries, kookaburras and lorikeets and we fed the kangaroos. When we left we went to see what we could find out about the cyclone. ... read more

On the way to Port Douglas I went on a day trip to Cape Tribulation to see the Daintree Rainforest and guess what, it rained all day. We went on a river cruise to see crocodiles. Unfortunately we didn't see one as the river was to high due to the rain and the croc's were just swimming underneath. We did see a snake, but was hardly interested. Did a boardwalk of the rainforest and got soaked. We headed to a lookout which we couldn't see a thing due to the mist and rain and we didn't even bother getting out of the coach. Last thing was a trip to Mossman Gorge which you can usually swim in, but due to the heavy rain the current was way to high and too strong so none of that. ... read more

We flew from Sydney to Cairns then drove up the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas. Our appartment was fantastic, especially afer 2 weeks in a camper van! We were right next to the beach and the water was 30 degrees C, very warm. It was stinger season so we had to swim inside a netted area to keep safe. On our first full day we went to the Barrier Reef on a catamaran called the Aristocat. We went snorkelling and saw a puffa fish, loads of clown fish and mum and dad saw a turtle. We drove up to the Daintree National Park (tropical rainforest), it was very green and wet. We went on a boat trip and saw loads of crocodiles on the river, we didn't do any swimming here! One day we went ... read more

Waking up with slightly sore heads, we decided that driving would not be a good idea. Our hippy friends had decided the same, but were reminded of checking out time by the rather rude owner who knocked on their door and pointed at her watch saying “check out time is 10am sharp”. They were visiting friends who live on the site and were planning on stopping for breakfast so drove out the gates, parked their van on the road and wandered back in. We couldn’t get packed up in time so booked an extra half day on the site and walked into town to get a much needed breakfast. The café was busy but we managed to get a table outside. Breakfast was good - although not up to Melbourne standards. We did however have a ... read more
