Well......................................needless to say that the weather did not improve once we arrived back to Airlie Beach, but we were rejuvenated after a relaxing time on a tropical island and a quiet, comfy sleep. Although, I have to admit that I did not even make it a week before I had to have a break from the tent. In my defence, if it wasn’t for the rain, I think I would have lasted longer! Long Island is a beautiful tranquil island and I would love to go back (when the sun is shining). We caught a ferry from Airlie Beach and it took about 40mins to get to Long Island. We spent the last day relaxing in Airlie beach. The weather DID NOT improve, still rainy, so we decided to take a drive to Cedar Creek Falls. ... read more

HERVEY BAY & FRAZER ISLAND We arrive at Hervey Bay Greyhound stop frazzled. The air con was up full blast and when we made a food stop the temperature on the roof read 44 degrees. Hot, hot, hot! We jump in the waiting mini bus for the Palace backpackers, where we will be staying. En route we fill in the check in card and are told the bottle shop run goes at 6pm (we need to go if we want Goon for the Fraser Island trip) and if we want ‘all you can eat pizza’ that night sign up and pay by 6.30pm. We get put in a top floor 4 bed dorm with a crappy old fan which is luckily at our end (well those are the bunks we chose!). We have a balcony though ... read more

Tonight was an all you can eat pizza night - this was a great way of getting to know the people we are due to spend the next 3 days with. From the window in our dorm we saw hundreds of birds flying overhead, when we went out for tea and relaxed in the hammock we found these were in fact bats! Amazing! 19/01/10 Today is the start of our Cool Dingo Tour of Fraser Island; we were picked up outside of our hostel and taken to the ferry terminal this is where we were greeted by our tour guide for the next 3 days Jayson. We got in the bus and headed for the timber lodges (very nice!). In total there are 39 people on tour with us - somehow a minor got through the ... read more

Whale watching was something we had wanted to do for some time so we took the weekend to make a mad dash south to see the Whales frolick in the waters of Hervey Bay, Lorraine (from Ireland) came down with us and we popped into Agnes waters and 1770 on the way back so that henry could get a little bit of surf in before the calm waters of the Whitsunday Coast again. The Whales.... What a totally breathtaking sight to see all these magistical mammals in all their glory swimming and playing in the water enjoying the calm safe waters of Hervey Bay after there Trip north to Breed, we had seen them a couple of times (henry more so on the Ferry to Hamilton Island) around the waters of the Whitsundays where they come ... read more

G'Day, Well, I have finally arrived in Australia, first stop Sydney last Thursday, just in time to escape the big freeze!! I had a brilliant flight with almost no jetlag. OMG Sydney is a beautiful city, although not so nice when it was freezing, wet and too windy to do the Bridge climb on Friday. I eventually completed my first challenge on a warmer day when I climbed the Harbour Bridge, unfortunately Marg was not allowed to accompany me on my first epic journey! The views from the 'summit' were awsome - (their speak not mine). I was really well looked after by Martine's family and especially her dad Bob, who became my unofficial and unpaid guide! Went by train to the Blue Mountains and got some walking in and encountered my first Aussie wildlife - ... read more

OK first off, apologies for all those that have been missing the blog updates or just thought that we were dead. The good news is we're not and we're still having a great time. Currently about half way down the east coast of Australia and melting in 38dg heat (from what we've heard it's not too far from what it's like in England??). Anyway, apologies in advance for how long this entry is going to be, as you can imagine we've been up to quite a bit! Since our last update we left the Thai islands and headed north once more to Bangkok. A quiet (ish) night there and we then flew out to Singapore. We spent a mere 24 hours there so didn't get to see too much and the weather was pretty pants so ... read more

It was another very early morning as we woke up and packed our gear ready to take the morning Greyhound bus into Hervey Bay. Once we were packed we took the free shuttle bus from our hostel and boarded the Greyhound was we were there. It took us a few hours before we reached Harvey Bay where our YHA hostel shuttle was waiting for us. Since there were a few buses coming in we had to wait for them to arrive so we headed to the supermarket to pick a few things up before eventually we were on our way. We arrived at the hostel and were greeted with cold drinks and small cakes, it was a first for any hostel I have ever stayed with and it made a big impression on us. After checking ... read more

We did one week of capsicum picking and that was enough for us. Our back was just too painful so we decided not to do it anymore. We got new work on Monday, mango picking. The work is easy but when you break the mangos off the tree there is a sap coming out which burns your skin. Some people react more to it than others. My skin was alright but Jonas ‘ was really bad (it was already getting better on the photos). So we weren’t too disappointed when we found out that there won’t be any work for the next week. The last week we worked for a painter. Definitely the best job we had here so far. Inside, long breaks, didn’t have to drive our own car and Daniel (the painter) was really ... read more

How awful to see on TV the terrible pictures coming from the Samoan earthquake and tsunami. We feel so much for those who have lost loved ones. We have had two restful days at pretty Burrum Heads. We always enjoy our little stays here. We've stayed when all the campers are the retirees who have been coming for years to spend the winter months here, gradually 'working' their way to the front riverside sites. They all know each other and share recipes, patterns and fishing spots. Last year and this, we've arrived when it's school holidays and the grey nomads are replaced by young families. This is the time we really love being here. There isn't all that much to do and nothing laid on in the way of entertainment. Instead, all the children become friends ... read more
