From Brisbane I headed to Noosa. I had been told this was a nice place to hang out for a while. So had booked a couple of nights here, plus I got one free with my Koala Adventures Fraser Island/Whitsundays package. I wasn't as fond of Noosa as I was of Byron, it didn't have the same atmosphere, and this may've been because we were based a bit further from the beach, up a big hill. Oh and the fact that within three hours of arriving, my wallet (with drivers licence, yha card, credit/debit cards and some cash, English SIM Card - Don't try and use that number ever again!) was stolen. Grrr. It was bad times when my phone credit ran out and my other debit card was stopped due to expected fraud, it was ... read more

16/05/09 Saturday Day 274 Yet another day of driving Another 400k+ day clocked up. We did however stop off at the rum distillery in Bundaberg for a quick tour and we also got two free drinks which made the tour turn out to be good enough value! That was about it for today really. So now we’re here in Hervey Bay. We’ve a tour booked for tomorrow to visit Fraser Island. 17/05/09 Sunday Day 275 Fraser Island Checked out the town last night. It’s basically one massive long esplanade with shops and pubs dotted around in little groups, but none more than a few minutes walk. Went to Houlihans Irish bar. It was one or two pubs closest to us and the liveliest. The was a local band playing there. Not bad at all and there ... read more

On Wednesday we drove from Fraser Island towards Hervey Bay, but we stopped first at the Visitor Information Centre in Maryborough where we discovered that they hold a market here every Thursday morning. Maryborough was the birthplace of P. L. Travers, author of Mary Poppins, although she left when young. We refuelled here and bought lunch from Sauers Pie Shop Bakery, which we'd heard about from a fellow traveller. In Hervey Bay we stayed at the Australiana Top Tourist Park. The next morning we headed back to Maryborough for the markets. Here we picked up jars of 'coolabah' and 'macadamia' honey, some rosella jam and lots of cheap fruit and veges - Alex says she has never paid 50 cents per kilo for tomatoes before! After lunch, we stayed for the 1 pm firing of the ... read more

Day 79 - Byron Bay This is the day when we wrote our last blog and re-did all our photo's that had disappeared. The weather was absolutely foul with torrential rain all day so we were not exactly missing out. We did drive out to Mount Warning but we couldn't try and climb it as it is too unsafe in heavy rain. All in all it was a frustrating day stuck in a wet seaside town (we were starting to feel Australia is a rainy country!). Day 80 - Byron Bay - Southport (Gold Coast) Before we set off on our trip to Coolangatta on the Gold Coast we made a quick visit to Cape Byron Lighthouse before all the crowds. We made the short walk to the most Easterly point on mainland Australia and ... read more

Another flight, this time with Virgin Blue, to Brisbane, then a 4 hour bus journey in our 12 seater charabanc and we reach Hervey Bay. And guess what? Another 5 star place of luxury, staying at the Allegra Mercure apartments, estimated at being worth $1.2 million! How the hell are we gonna go back to slumming it I do not know! Hervey Bay is very picturesque, the beach was so tranquil and on the day we stopped there, there was no one on it. What a lovely place to live . . . and some of the Bloom clan also obviously thought so too as Gina's Aunty Pat, Uncle Emil and cousin Ann and husband Tim live in this very beautiful part of the world. It was lovely to have a family reunion and experience some ... read more

Thursday March 12 2009, Hillary and I checked out of the Noosa Heads YHA, and looked around the town a bit. We had some time to kill before making our way to the Greyhound bus, so we took a little walk. A couple hours gone, we were all set up and ready for the bus ride to Hervey Bay! It was a pretty lengthy ride, but after about 5 some odd hours, we made it to Hervey Bay. The town actually doesn’t have one main centre, but is dispersed into several little town centres. It keeps it from building up, but makes it difficult for one-stop shopping and sight seeing. We checked into the YHA, and made our way to the local Woolworths for some groceries. Australia seems to have two major food chains, Woolworths and ... read more

Days 26=30: Noosa (26 miles), Inskip Pt. - beginning of Great Sandy Straight (48 miles), Hervey Bay - Scarness (52 miles) (3 days) In my foggy mind this morning, I can't remember the paddle into Noosa, but my notes tell me that I started at 1am and was there by 8am. I do remember arriving, because I wanted to note the depth of the water in the river mouth I was entering (I stayed at a caravan park inside the river about a mile or so). The 2nd year I stayed there also - and on departing at my normal time (dark, am), I navigated myself onto a sand bar trying to get out - it seemed like a maze of channels to navigate to get me out. (after checking with the locals - the easy ... read more

Re-visiting Hervey Bay is more of a trip to memory lane for us. Ahhhhhh, Nostalgia is a bliss ! Standing in front of our very first humble abode once again flashed a flood of cherished memories making us feel all warm and fuzzy. I’m ecstatic that the apartment where Jamie and I first lived in when we both left home is still left standing amidst of progress and new development creeping up in the town of Hervey Bay. I imagined that it might have already been demolished to make way for skyscrapers and world class resorts to accommodate the influx of tourists and wealthy retirees. I am very pleased to see that the town council has prevented the establishments of any monolithic forms of accommodations in the area. I am also happy to see more trees, ... read more
