Arrived into Hervey Bay ready for my Fraser Island trip. I met my group who I would be spending the next three days with in the bar. We were given a briefing on what to do if we came across the wild dingos (which was apparently just stand there) and how we operate the four wheeled drives. We then had to get up at 6.00 in the morning to pack up the truck, which took a lot of patience and many coffees. We finally set off with a map, tents, torch and cool box of meat and wine set to catch the ferry across to Fraser Island. The ferry only took about an hour and then we seemed to be transported into a whole new environment. By magic our phone reception died and the roads became ... read more

Wowsers, has a lot been going on since I last tapped on a keyboard. So we boarded the "Pacific Star" from Airlie beach and hit the high seas. We visited the most gorgeous white sand beach, aplty named 'Whitehaven' before hitting some great snorkel beaches and doing our first dive ever. Now I have never seen coral or crazy fish before, so this few minutes underwater blew me away... and then we hit the reef. We sailed out on our little catamaran to 'Bait reef' to a place called the stepping stones. I woke up on my bday morning to a stunning sunrise and tossed on my suit. We chilled for a bit, watching the whales cruise past, then we went for another dive. This one was way cooler and longer and nealy blew me out ... read more

After finally pulling ourselves away from the home comforts of sydney we headed north in to byron bay in search of warmer climes. after spending our first night back in a hostel we felt a bit out of touch especially as everyone around us just wanted to go on the piss, so we spent the next 3 nights under canvas at clarkes beach campsite. the sun came out for us as well and it was nice to spend a few days just hanging out on the beach rather than being togged upto the eyeballs!!There's also a big surf culture here and it was really cool just to watch guys getting trashed in the waves as you walked along the beach. We went a walk around the headland in search of whales and saw lots of dolphins ... read more

Hey everyone!!!!!!! How was everyone's Canada Day? I hope it went swimmingly. Thanks for all the birthday wishes, emails, and facebook messages, and also a big happy birthday (belated) to Marilyne! Well we are now in Hervey Bay, Queensland, after our LAST long bus ride!!!!!! 13 hours and overnight. YUCK. But we are here, and its wonderful and warm! We last left you in Airlie Beach, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We spent that day relaxing by the lagoon, sunning, swimming, and shopping. We both picked up some surf shorts for our surfing adventures coming up. Then we hopped on our bus after listening to some amateur live music which was quite excellent in fact, he did a lot of covers. I promptly knocked myself out with gravol and Dennis needed no help at all! We woke ... read more

Hi again all Arrived back to the mainland from Fraser Island yesterday. I spent two nights on the island - my second time there, but still as spectacular! I decided to head across to Fraser on Thurs morning, spending Wed night on the mainland to watch New South Wales take out the State of Origin series against Queensland .... well that was the plan anyway. Lets hope the Blues turn up to at least play in the deciding game 3! In any case, the flogging that we copped (30 - 0!) was enough motivation to get away from the locals and gt across to Fraser. I took the drive down through Maryborough and onto Rainbow Beach. The barge ride across to Fraser from Inskip Point is alot shorter than from Hervey Bay or River Heads (and ... read more

Welcome to Hervey Bay!! But first ... i'll fill you all in on what Richard has been up to since his last post. The weather on the Sunshine Coast decided to clear up as the week went on, and so I decided to stay on at Alexandra Headland (near Mooloolaba) for a few more days. I enjoyed sitting in the sun on Mooloolaba Beach reading the Joanne Lees story - in all honesty, this is a great read! If you enjoy a good crime story (abeit a true one!), I would definately recommend this book. I finished it in all of two dayd. I could not put it down! I visited Eumundi markets again on Saturday - yes Darryl, they are not far from Noosa. Who would I happen to run into at the markets but ... read more

Hi all So sorry I have been slack with updating the travel blog; you must be wondering what has happened to us. We're 14 weeks on now from Olivia's birth and life is very busy, as you can imagine :-) So, here is a photo diary from our lovely two week holiday, with my Dad (who stayed with us for 6 weeks recently but has sadly gone home now), on a 42 foot catamaran on the seas next to Fraser Island, 2hrs flight north of Sydney. We had a lovely time sailing (quite a feat with just Mike and my Dad to raise the sails, steer and navigate) and exploring the coastline of the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island. We also went ashore for a day to 4x4 and see the pristine lakes and rainforests, beautiful! ... read more

Hervey Bay Arriving at Hervey Bay, we were greated by the Koala mini bus waiting to transfer us to the hostel and a short drive later we had checked into the hostel and dumped our bags in the room. Our room was not particularly nice, however we did have it to ourselves which was a bonus. After a much needed long, hot shower we were tucked up in bed desperate for a good nights sleep. Unfortunately the group excited about their trip to fraser island the following day congregated outside our room with a few drinks, cheering, laughing and singing. A few hours later they were told to be quiet from the hostel workers, however it seemed to take a further few hours for them to comprehend what had been asked of them. Glancing around the ... read more

Alright where did we leave off? I think we were all scrambling to the bus station so that we could catch our bus to Hervey Bay on time. Well, we caught the bus, so it was no big deal. We stopped a couple of hours into the drive in Brisbane to change buses, where I had McDonald's for only the second time in Australia. I still don't like it much. We had to weigh our bags at this terminal for some strange reason. Mine was 14.6kg, well under the 20kg limit. A couple of girls were charged $5 because their bags weighed too much. Sooo we kill some time wandering around the giant bus station until I see ours finally pull up. We all climb aboard and make our way to Hervey Bay. When we arrive, ... read more
