Unless you have been deprived of something yu never really know how much you love and miss that thing - you know, "Absence makes the heart grow stronger"? It's like that with Sunday Roasts. For a month of Sundays (quite literally) we searched the bars & pubs of Australia for a roast dinner but found none. Until Hervey Bay. The pork roast was huge and we ate and savoured every mouthful! We had a giggle on Australian day at the 50 year old barmaid who was constantly stoned and the gaggle of 'teenagers' drinking booze - honestly, it was like Zac and Ellie going upi to the bar! stayed one night in Mackay where the was a beautiful full moon and Justin surfed the van.... read more

Hi everyone, sorry about the delay in doing our blog... we've not had chance! We hopped on the overnight bus from Airlie Beach down to Hervey Bay, and it seems like it was just in time! I think our greyhound was the last one to get out of Airlie before the roads were cut off due to flooding! And this country is suffering from major drought??? The rain is keeping the farmers and government happy anyway! Makes things a little tricky for us tourists sometimes though! Anyway, it wasn't a bad journey actually - we had 4 seats each so spread out a little - we slept stretched out over the aisle! V's grandparents put us in touch with their friends John and Janice who very kindly let us stay at very short notice! They were ... read more

My coach trip up from Brissy to Hervey Bay was relatively uneventful. I sat next to an asian lady and took the opportunity of perhaps making a new friend on the 8 hr journey. So i asked her where she was going. she gave me a concerned frown in response. so i asked again and suggested destination as an alternative word that she would understand. she now looked very worried, but i persevered asking her again the same question and offering her that I was going to hervey bay. she looked relieved and said that her job was...no no i said, where are you going? cairns?? oh she said the gold coast. right then, so somewhere along the east coast of australia, how vague is that? right, so no conversation with her then. she promptly fell ... read more

Thursday 10th January From Nimbin we drove through Mount Warning National Park and along the valley round the central plug of the extinct volcano, with the rim high above us. Wooded thickly with eucalypts and bush, with few houses dotted around - we passed only one car. Two fords were just passable now, as we have had no heavy rain for three days, and the bridges only just cleared the water. As we swished across one wooden bridge a turtle scuttled in front of us on his way downstream. Further on, a small red kangaroo went across the road and down the slope at the side. It was the first one Kev had seen and he was beginning to think that kangaroos didn't actually exist. We drove through Tweed Heads, on the border of New South ... read more

I arrived in Brisbane on the 3rd of January. Steven came to the airport to pick me up; I was glad as it was p*ssing rain. On the way home we had a chat about Cricket...Obviously I said it was boring, he tried to prove me the contrary and so on. We bought loads of beers on the way anyway and sat down to watch some...Cricket. At last I understood the rules thanks to Steve who's been really patient and assertive (sorry Ed, he explained it much better than you ;) I met Kylie and little Olli and had a wonderful BBQ and marinated Chilli Prawns, AWSOME!! (Kylie's favourite word ;) From Brisbane I booked a trip to go to Fraser Island. I guess I'm just the luckiest backpacker cause the 2 days I booked were ... read more

Happy New 2008! Hope you had fantastic new years celebration. I travelled from Noosa to Hervey Bay via Rainbow beach. Rainbow beach was an amazing on the sandblast. Hervey Bay is not a very happening place but it's the gateway to Fraser island. That's were I spent the New Year. Fraser island is the largest sand island. It was a blast! There was a cyclone heading towards Fraser Island for new years so instead of going camping on the Island I went for a guided tour. I'll remember Fraser island for two things - Rain and the New Year. It was great fun. We were in the Dingo bar for new years party. This NYE was definitely different considering I have spend all of them in big cities before. Fraser Island is beautiful and diverse. There ... read more

It was a pretty long way down to Hervey Bay so we broke the journey up by staying the night near Rockhampton on a nice little campsite where we were the only tent and had a entire field to choose from so of course we chose on top of an ants nest- doh! The following day we made the remaining 5 hour journey down to Hervey Bay and the clouds seemed to be getting darker and darker the further we went. Somehow when we arrived at the campsite the sun came out and the clouds seemed to disappear. Got the tent up in record time- about 15 minutes and went to explore the town. We ended up chilling on Torquay beach for a few hours before heading back for another bbq. The next day we ... read more

We board the boat and take our bags downstairs to our 'double' bunk, though later someone accurately describes it as 'a single king size bunk'. I have a sense of dread about the trip and wonder how we'll manage 2 days on this boat. There's literally nowhere to run! Yet, we start our journey and our first port of call is a place near Hook Island where we all disembark and go for a snorkel. Jumping off a boat into lovely blue water seems to bring the trip up about 200 degrees in terms of enjoyment. The corals are once again, intricate and fascinating. We are surrounded by fish and Joe even had a few marine fans who followed him around! The only downfall about being out in the sea is Marsh Flies (I'm not sure ... read more

G'Day All! Well we've been a Australia for a week and a half now - seems like so much longer tho coz we've been busy busy everyday! Started off in Brisbane for 4 days - its a lovely city everywhere is so clean and well kept. Wandered round the city on the first 'real' day (day before we slept the whole day recovering from the jet lag!) - got the ferry up and down the river and went over to the city beach which unfortunately was closed for refurb! Next day we went to a koala sanctuary (some of you may have seen the pic) which was cool - we cuddled a koala (so cute, i wanted to smuggle it out!) and fed kangaroos - saw one with a baby in its pouch too! Was funny ... read more

We got to Hervey Bay in the evening of December 8th, and had a pizza fest ready for 3 days of hunger on Fraser Island. The next morning, we got put into our group (it was the usual 8 of us) and were given our camping equipment, 4x4 (Toyota Landcruiser) and then we got to go shopping. We bought a ton of food and then were on our way. The ferry ride over there was ok, but everyone was getting grumpy and tired. We drove around lots, laid on the beach and did some offroad driving (well, Ollie did, I decided I only wanted to drive on the beach, which in itself was v cool!). The first night, we set up camp - the boys put up the tents and Heather and Simone cooked a BBQ ... read more
