Hi all!! You'll be glad to hear we arrived back safely from Fraser Island i.e. not being bitten by a Death Adder or mauled by a Dingo! although we did encounter them both!! Met in the hostel bar for briefing at 7am and were split into groups of 9 or 10 - our group consisted of 2 french girls, a french guy, a swizz-italian couple and 2 english lads - definitely had the best of the bunch on offer! We had to prepare a shopping list and ALCOHOL list (believe me we were going to need it if we were camping for 2 nights and obviously we were in charge of this list!) and then once we had all the items packed in our 4 x 4 we drove to the rental place for more safety ... read more

Arrived in Hervey Bay after travelling through the night on the Greyhound from Airlie Beach, sad to leave Airlie hope Hervey Bay is as good! Didn't manage to sleep much on the way down but journey was still ok. Luckily we arrived at what has been our best hostel yet : ) and had a afternoon kip! Went for a walk along the beach and to check out what Hervey Bay had to offer - an Irish Bar ; ) so popped in for lunch and a pint! Met up with my friend from home Chris and a couple of his mates in the evening (again at the Irish Bar ; ) to swap Aussie stories and tips as he is travelling the opposite way to us! Off to fraser Island tommorrow for 3 days and ... read more

Christmas day for us began at the not so dignified time of around 7am, the sun was definately already high and hot hot hot!! We got up at our usual leisurely pace and indulged in some lovely cereal.. before exchanging a few xmas greetings with our pals on the campsite. After slapping on the suncream we headed down to the beach for a quick dip. Naturally aftter the mention of shark-infested water the previosu day saw me entering a little cautiously! But once i saw others in i went for it..it wasn't that deep anyway so i took the chance and have to say it was very refreshing but not the slightest bit christmas-like!! Headed back for a rinse in the pool and a generally lazy and chilled out day punctuated by beer and wine. We ... read more

Left Mackay to arrive at Hervey Bay, so much beach, very good accommodation and a nanosecond from the beach. Have decided I am just gonna have to get jb a man bag, he loses so many things, vintage Raybans, dongle, and a fab new shirt, so I pick up after him.... credit cards, sunnies, swiss army knife. Which we then couldn't locate, (why was he was more pissed off about this than me having/finding his credit cards?) Thought I'd checked my bag but was so fed up with emptying my bag to look for his stuff (hence he needs a man bag) was really pleased when it turned up at check in! -was he? oh no! he had to walk the 30 second walk back to the car to lock it up! If he doesn't change ... read more

There are vivid memories of sitting on top of Indian Head on the east coast of Fraser Island - the sun was shining, sharks were swimming in the sea below, dolphins were also swimming making a mockery that the two give each other a wide berth, the odd turtle floated on by - it was a Monday morning. What would we be doing on a dreary Monday back in the UK? It was one of those iconic moments when you know you made the right decision to head to the other side of the world with a backpack. We probably had the same thoughts on Whitehaven Beach at 6 o’clock one recent morning, but I was too busy playing beach cricket at the time to dwell on it. The same thoughts had not been on my ... read more

It rained heavily all night and was still dull when we woke up. We’d planned today to be a relaxed one with a drive a few hours north, booking our tour and accommodation on the way for Fraser Island. Just outside the campsite we stopped at a service station to make the phonecalls and I popped into a commercial visitors centre just to take a quick look at a few more brochures. Even though we’d already made our decision about the Fraser Island tour I thought I’d just ask the the staff for their opinion to make sure we’d made the right choice. The lady on reception came up with a different suggestion altogether. Instead of doing the overnight island tour of Fraser Island that we’d planned, she suggested we do a day tour of the ... read more

Hervey Bay is yet another faceless beach town on the East Coast of Australia. Our main reason for coming here was to go on a three day self drive jeep safari on Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world which is a short boat ride away, but we arrived a couple of days early in the hope that the town might be a good place to chill out for a couple of days. Unfortunately there wasn't a great deal to do and we spent the next couple of days just hanging out on the beach between rainy downpours and wandering up and down the esplanade. We were staying in the Koalas resort again as they were the organisers of our Fraser trip and we got two free nights accommodation. Our room wasn't damp this ... read more

We left Cairns on the 19th October and headed down to Mission Beach only a couple of hours on the Greyhound and then afterwards went to Townsville. We spent Dan's birthday here (not by choice just happened to be!), places down the East Coast have been pretty quiet country towns. Fine for a short stop over to break up the journey just browsing the shops, getting the beers in and chilling out by the lagoons. After Townsville to stared in Airlie Beach, what a highlight so far. There's always a party in Airlie!! We met Ash from the bus terminal and shortly after got on the beers at Magnums (where we eventually ended up staying). Airlie is where the Aussie's like to holiday, i wud say its like Newquay at home. Young, good bars, live music, ... read more
