Ok! So Airlee Beach was a great success. Three days two nights of hanging out on a boat, sailing to different snorkel and beach locations. Our most impressive destination was the famous Whitehaven beach, where the sand is paper-white and so fine it crunches under your feet like snow. Incredible, really. I went into the water up to about waist height, and within a few minutes was surrounded by sand sharks, 2.5 to 3 feet long. Don't worry, these guys eat crabs and couldn't care less about me. While whitehaven was beautiful, my favourite part of this trip was just hanging out on a boat. The weather was perfect, the water was bluey turquoise all the time. I decided to learn a bit about sailing, which I really started to love. Our boat, the Broomstick, has ... read more

Hi all Well after I last updated on here it was evening time and in Airlie Beach there is only one thing to do and that is go to the bar. So me and Tom headed down there and we had a mini after party from the people of the boat. We also met two girls (Sarah and Lisa) who were on the Oz bus with us. We got some free drink as all the boats did however by claiming there were more people on our boat we got more free drink. About 8 of the 17 people of the boat came and so did a couple of crew members. After the pub shut I headed back although Tom went to a club and kept the party going till the early hours when he stumbled in ... read more

Greetings from Queensland and the Sunshine Coast - although I'm doing my blog because it's raining here at the moment! It is still warm though, hopefully it will clear up so I can go for a dip in the sea later. So we have been travelling in the car for about 10 days now, and still have a lot of driving to do before we get to Cairns. It doesn't look that far on a map! We started off driving to Bondi Beach, and it looks just like it does in the photographs. Glorious white sandy beach, with a great sea and loads of surfers. Our first overnight stop was just outside Newcastle in a newly redecorated pub with some dingy rooms above. They haven't got round to decorating the rooms yet! We tried to fit ... read more

G'day mate, It took us about 3 1/2 hours up the coast to reach Hervey bay. Before we checked in at a camp, we stopped in town and booked up a one day safari of Frazer island the following day. The tour started at 7.20am so got up about 6.30am. A coach picked us up from the camp and continued to pick up everyone else. In total there was about 20 people on the trip. We got dropped to the ferry by our tour guide, Pete, who would come with us on the ferry and he would also drive the 4*4 coach on the island. The ferrytook about an hour. When we arrived we got dropped on the West side of the island. So in the 4*4 bus (which was really weird), we drove across to ... read more

6.30am. its early. too bloody early. i check my clothes and luckily most of them are kinda dry. We gear up and go to the orientation spot. everybody is standing around in a gaze. There are men in black shirts barking orders at faces that hold no answers or natural volition. I grab aaron to help get the tents ready. i figure its a lot better than hanging around the zombie fields. Shortly, we have our tents examined and bundled, and the rest of our groups preparations are complete. We load up the truck, and head out. 3 of us in the front seat, and the remaining 8 of us squashed in the back. It's already fun. We take a 15min drive to the port. It's still a little awkward in the group because we're mostly ... read more

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and we went on a selfdrive 4wd jeep safari over there. me stu, caroline and camilla, and stephane who were all on the boat for whitsundays, amongst some french that were abit of a nightmare. We went out there in the jeep and the weather got the better of us, it was a monsoon and we camped on the beach in it. not clever but had no choice as the tide cut us off. was an experience though and we even managed an aussie bbq on the beach (under a tarp mind you). we had been to some amazing lakes that we swam in and had a good day. the next day the french wanted to go home and the swiss (bloody swiss they normally cant ... read more

Arrived in Harvey Bay which is a very small quiet town with very little night life considering it is the gateway to Fraser island and thousands of backpackers must pass through here every year. Having said that the dorm was by far the best value dorm of Australia so far. It was a four bed dorm but it had it's own ensuite bathroom and kitchen. I booked a 1 day tour of Fraser island. They did 2 and 3 day tours but they all seemed to involve the same things, only slower. So once again I was picked up by a mini bus fairly early in the morning and taken to the ferry port where I boarded a ferry to Fraser island. Fraser island is an island made up completely of sand. It is really weird ... read more

After Airlee we did a nights stop off at Rockhampton & then made it to Hervey Bay. Happy for a bit of civilisation we booked our trip to Fraser Island for a few days later after, once again, the storm had passed! We chilled out for a few days & then went for our briefing for our trip... We were put in groups of 11 & went shopping for supplies of food & lots of goon!! Next morning we had to be there at 6:45am to pack our 4x4’s with all the necessities & we were off down to the ferry! We were really lucky as we had a fab group of people, Lou Lou & James AKA ‘The Bondi’s’, Adam AKA Bob The Builder (I named him this due to the amount of crack constantly ... read more

10th February 2008 After following John the fish and chip man's instructions we arrived at the Beach Motor Inn in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, apparently a surfers paradise. We went to bed very early as we were 3 hours ahead of Australian time after flying in from New Zealand. So we were awake before 6.00 am next morning as were all the surfers. We strolled along the crowded beach and watched the surfers riding the waves and the lifeguards training for rescues. After breakfast at the Sunday market we travelled up the coast from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast to Maryborough on the Southern Fraser Coast. We stopped briefly at Noosa Head to walk along the coastal path where the tourist information reported that a koala had been spotted a few minutes along the path. ... read more
