We were spoilt for the week with home cooked food, hot showers and choccy bikkies. Laura was mostly babysitting the two little boys (Ben 1yr and Alex 3yrs) and Stuart got to have a work out in the garden digging holes. Stuart also got some advice on how to become rich so watch this space… Before leaving Hervey Bay we splashed out on a whale tour (get it?) as whale season was in full swing with hundreds of whales migrating from the Antarctic to the warmer seas of the east coast and stopping to play in Hervey Bay. And we weren’t disappointed! We lost count of the number of whales we saw as so many were coming close to the boat and seemed to be as interested in us as we were in them. They were ... read more

Hi from Townsville!! Here it’s rainy but hot. Today we went to the Aquarium. I saw a Yoda fish and a giant shovelnose ray. (A Yoda fish is a fish that looks like Yoda but is actually called a remora!) I saw a weird, colourful lobster thing which looked like a weird, colourful, lobster thing which is why I described it that way. No school is cool but some days, (when we don’t have anything to do,) we have homework days when we do homework for most of the day. Yesterday, we spent 3hours playing on a water playground which had a huge bucket that every 20 seconds it tipped over and water went everywhere. A couple of weeks ago, we went on a “Whale watching tour” where we went on a boat and looked for ... read more

Fraser Island was sooo good! I loved it! Met some really cool people! And the lakes were amazing! I love swimming in fresh water! I even drove the 4x4 along the beach. I defo recommend it. And if you go make sure you have a look over Indian head. It's a cliff edge. If you go at sun set or rise you can see some awesome sights! I saw a massive sting ray! and a load of turtles. After Fraser Island i headed to the Whitsunday Islands for the mandatory sailing tour of these stunning islands and bays. Whitehaven beach is one of those places which look much better in reality than in even the glossiest magazines. Just paradise! Just having a bit of a stop off, then up to cairns.... read more

Just arrived in Hervey bay. I really want to to do a 4x4 self drive. So i've found a company that stick you in with 7 others to drive round the Island. Thought it would be a good way to meet other people. Haven't done much research into the company, but really can't be bothered. Hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the bum!?! lol.. I don't leave until tomorrow, just gonna chill to then.... read more

Rain, rain oh and some more rain!!! With our “time out” in Brisbane over we headed on another train journey (which means more cream tea!) and then got a connecting bus to get to Hervy Bay, the nearest town that travellers stay at to get to Fraser Island. This was fairly obvious in the layout and excitement level of the town, that being pretty dull and just full of hostels and restaurants. The bus dropped us off quite late at this closed retail park basically, so we sat around and waited at a vague bus stop in the hope we were going to be picked up by the hostel bus at some point. Luckily for us there was good old MacDonald’s near by with free wifi whoopee, so we headed there for our dinner (we really ... read more

Fraser Island… Fraser Island… Fraser Island… This will probably be quite a long post, so I would advise that you make a cup of tea and then sit down to enjoy it. I’m adding this when I’m halfway through: it’s a REALLY long post First, a little bit of what I’ve learnt about Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, and although it is made of sand, it has rainforest growing all over it - which is strictly speaking scientifically impossible. It’s a world heritage site, due to it’s cultural (Aboriginal) and natural significance, so although there are a handful of hotels/hostels/resorts on the island, it’s very much an eco-friendly holiday. Which generally, in my experience, translates into poor hygiene!!! Just a random fact: on the island there are trees growing called Satinay ... read more

The Brumlins first holiday blog is published and eagerly awaited by the masses!! It has been hailed by the press as a must read (or at least a look at the piccies!) if you like that sort of thing….. Wednesday 31 March at 10.37am and we’re off, it only took 9 months of planning so we must have forgotten something..Lots of talk prior to departure about Lucy, would she get us over the Gateway Bridge let alone up to Tin Can Bay? Well done Lucy, in under 4 hours! Tin Can bay was very black, white, pink and noisy. The black of the mosquitos, the white of the sand flies, the pink of the itchy spots and the noise of the thousands of kids on our camp site! Not to be put off by these little ... read more

Today a bus ride to Hervey bay, a great really great hostel, with a pool !!! just b4 i left Noosa one of the guys said to come outside he had something to show me, now i remembered what mummy told me about men like that - so I went very causiously and was rewarded with a 3ft long lizzard outside the room, dropped everything and caught him on video !!! very exciting. The weather has hotted up today, scorching by the pool - it was lovely to feel the sun on me again after the last two days of cloudyness. I'm in a 4 bedded dorm with its own bathroom, but theres a man in there that is a dead ringer for Mr Bean, honest-a-god !!! quite un nerving i can tell u, anyway theres ... read more

Some girls joined our dorm at Nomad's late last night so we chatted to them when we woke up this morning. They were French and Italian and had met during their travels of Australia. They'd spent the last few days on Fraser Island but had had a terrible time because of the weather. It wasn't just raining... it was torrential and we'd witnessed it from Hervey Bay last night. Me and Ellie had hoped to book a ferry over to Fraser Island today but the day trips were about $150 and we didn't want to waste our money if the island was going to be flooded and miserable. We decided to have a cheap day instead - stick to cereal for a few meals then cook something for dinner that night. We're drastically running out of ... read more

We were up at 6am ready to leave Pommie Palace behind. Shorty gave us a lift to Surfers Paradise where we could catch our bus up the East Coast. He had to hot wire his car to get it started. It was torrential rain outside so within minutes of arriving in Sufers, we were drenched. Fortunately they have lockers at the bus station so we were able to drop off our bags while we went in search of a café. Both of us wrapped colourful scarves round our heads to protect our hair and attracted some funny looks. We looked like little Indian women… wearing flip flops. This rain was miserable and we quickly established there was only one thing for it… we’d simply have to get pissed. And that is how we found ourselves searching ... read more
