Hi again all
Arrived back to the mainland from Fraser Island yesterday. I spent two nights on the island - my second time there, but still as spectacular!
I decided to head across to Fraser on Thurs morning, spending Wed night on the mainland to watch New South Wales take out the State of Origin series against Queensland .... well that was the plan anyway. Lets hope the Blues turn up to at least play in the deciding game 3! In any case, the flogging that we copped (30 - 0!) was enough motivation to get away from the locals and gt across to Fraser. I took the drive down through Maryborough and onto Rainbow Beach. The barge ride across to Fraser from Inskip Point is alot shorter than from Hervey Bay or River Heads (and marginally cheaper ... well I am an unemployed bum after all!). I was on the ferry across by lunchtime, and had set up camp at Central Station Campground by early afternoon. The Thunderbox was out once again ....
My first stop on Fraser was Lake McKenzie, a place which left me in awe during my last visit. Whilst I knew what to
Fraser Isand Roads
This is one of the tame ones!! expect this time, it was none-the-less as spectacular as I recalled. Anabslutely gorgeous part of Australia - which I am sure more English, German, American and French backpakers have seen than local Aussies. Nothing against the backpackers of course, but just amazing that we seem to miss the beauty of our own backyard. I spend he rest of the day at Lake McKenzie, went for a swim in the crystal clear fresh waters (it was 26C!) and lay on the beach admiring the views.
Unfortunately, especially in winter, when the sun sets so early, there is not a great deal to do in the evenings, so it was off to the Thunderbox to read a book, and get a very very early night. I was woken at about 6am by the sound of birds whistling in the forest which surrounds the campground - you could honestly bottle that sound. A really pleasant way to wake up. So by 7am I was on the road again - off to Lake McKenzie again to get some more pics. The lake was deserted when I got there (not surprisingly ... since it was only 7.30am!), and the water was like glass ...
Lake McKenzie
If only the tourists weren't there .... the clouds and the surrounding tree covered dunes reflecting in the water. Gorgeous is the only way to describe it! Of course I have attached pics for you all!
In the afternoon it was off to Lake Wabby, then to Lake Birrabeen - but Lake McKenzie is definately the jewel of the island! And by 5pm it was back to the campground for another early night of reading.
On Saturday morning it was time to pack up the Thunderbox, and head off to the beach by Eurong. I wanted to head up to Eli Creek - which all the literature warns you on. This creek is a fast flowing high volume creek which has been known to swallow 4WD's. And I am serious! Yes, the JGG is more than capable, but being on my own, I was a tad anxious, even though I had crossed the creek on my last visit almost 5 years ago. In any case, Eli Creek was more than kind to me on this visit - being no more treachorous than all of the other minor creeks which flow across the Seventy Five Mile Beach. From there it was a short drive up to
Lake McKenzie Early Morning
The water was like a mirror in the early morning, and I could see tortoises poking their heads out of the water the Maheno Wreck where I took a few pics, and then it was back down the beach to meet the barge back to the mainland.
This morning I headed out to Howard and Burrum Heads. Burrum Heads is nice, although I almost did not make it there on account of being accosted by the locals in Howard! A former work colleague of mine emailed me details of where she used to live - in fact of the house that he built in Howard, so being the nice guy that I am, I decided to visit, take a pic and send it to her so that she could see her old place. I did not count on the very friendly neighbours coming out to enquire what I was up to (I guess you don't blame them really!! haha). Well Kev Watson was not too bad, once he knew what I was up to, and I escaped without too much harm done.
Tomorrow morning it is off to Bundaberg, where I will probably only stay one night (Bundaberg will probably be closed again Heth!). Then off to Mackay and Airlie.
hope all are well. Keep those emails and messages
coming through.
Catch you all soon!
Richard

Whats going on Cassar!!
G'day Mate. Pleased to see you are enjoying yourself. Disappointing to hear that the most interesting thing you can find to do at night is sit on the thunderbox, my first thought was how grateful I was that you chose to post photos of that! ... but having read on, it seems that the thunderbox may not be what I had first thought it was! Perhaps its not too much information after all! Aren't there any hot babes for you to chase in the evenings!
