23 June 2002 It was 9am when I left for my next week's job in Temora, which is a small country town in central New South Wales. Always looking for new roads to travel on, I checked my map which indicated I could head into territory I had not visited before, although it was going to be forty-seven kilometres longer. From Seymour I followed the Goulburn Highway through Shepparton and Numurkah and crossed into New South Wales near Tocumwal. I was now on the Newell Highway; it was only a few weeks ago when I was in this area, working in Griffith. Just north of Jerilderie, the landscape doesn't change much. It's mainly farming country with both grain or sheep in the paddocks. I continued on the Newell Highway through the town of Narrandera where the ... read more

24 May 2002 I left Deniliquin and drove thirty-six klms south to Mathara which took about half an hour. When I arrived in town I had to drive up and down the back streets to find the pre-school. The address the office had given me was wrong. Once I spotted the climbing frames under a large cover I knew I had found the Mathara Pre-School. I went inside and surprised the two lady’s working in the Center, it seems they weren’t expecting me until June. I decided to get in touch with my office to let them know about the mix up. I was told the date was right and I had to explain to the director, she apologised and let me set up my equipment. By 9.30 all of the thirteen children had arrived and ... read more

2 June 2002 I followed my usual direction through Yea, Seymour. When I was near the Shepparton airport I saw a yellow stunt plane fly low over the runway. It was about five hundred feet high and did three victory rolls before climbing high into the sky. As it reached a pre-determined altitude it rolled over and dived for the ground, pulling out at the last minute close to the runway then did another circuit of the airport. I pulled the car to the side of the road got my video camera out and ran across to the airport. I was just in time to watch the yellow plane land. I waited for about twenty minutes to see if it would take off again. It did, I was ready this time with the video camera. I ... read more

3 June 2002 This is the third year I have worked in Griffith and I must say the lady’s who run this Kindergarten are very helpful and easy to get on with. Today I only had nineteen children to photograph and they gave me lots of smiles and were a pleasure to work with. In the afternoon I went to a National Park about twenty klms east of town. The last time I was here I found a walking track that I promised myself, would be explored at a later date. At the end of a fifteen-minute walk I found a rock face that during the winter is the Falcon Falls. Unfortunately, because of the drought there was no water to be seen but I did spend a good hour climbing and exploring the cliff face. ... read more

19 May 2002 I made sure my fuel tank was full before leaving for my journey into NSW. The trip through Yea and Seymour was with overcast skys looming overhead. Every now and again spots of rain fell on the windcreen but the further from home the better the weather became. Once into NSW there was only about an hour and half of my trip left until the outscirts of Deniliquin was reached. I booked into the Centrepoint Motel just on 4 pm. That evening I went to the RSL for a meal but not before I photographed the local flocks of Corellas roosting in the trees on the banks of the Edward River. 20-21-23 May 2002 It was a couple of years ago the last time I was working in Deniliquin and I remember it ... read more

19 May 2003 I spent Sunday afternoon driving to Mooroopna. Not much life in town, even less going on in the bistro next to the motel. During the remaining hours of the day I read the books and magazines bought along with me on this trip. This morning I got ready for the first of two days work in the local Kindergarten. The weather was wet and took outside shots whenever there was a break in the weather. In the afternoon drove into Shepparton and found the towns library, such visits are becoming common. I'm fed-up walking the main shopping centres; they all seem to be the same. Well that’s not really fair, the postcards are different. 20 May 2003 Today's session in Mooroopna went well even though the rain continued. When I had finished, the ... read more

7 APRIL 2002 I started the day explaining to my girlfriend about how hard I'm finding taking photo's of little children, even after six years getting good shots of little children is not easy, what with dirty noses to wipe, children either love or hate strangers. When you get the good child in front of the camera, there might be a bunch of children standing in the background. What parent wants a picture of their child with somebody's leg or arm in the corner of the photo. I can't rely on the old saying, "If it’s a picture of my child, I will buy it" The Hume Freeway starts in the inner suburb of Coburg and finishes in Liverpool on the outskirts of Sydney. Its been said to be the most boring trip between two capital ... read more

10 APRIL 2002 Today was the first of three days in town. The good thing about working in the country is I'm usually close to work. The motel was within walking distance but I had to take all my equipment, so the car was used. The staff were great and ticked off names as I got the photos I needed. The session was finished around mid-day and I was back in the motel unit soon after. Finishing so soon was a bit of a surprise and I had not planned to do anything in the afternoon. A quick look in the Robertson pamphlet gave me the answer. I always find graveyards fascinating to visit (not stay). On a hill near town I found the last resting place of some of Robertsons population. The oldest gravestone I ... read more

16 May 2003 Bored with morning TV I left my motel early and arrived in Mathoura an hour before I was due to start work. Parked the car outside the centre and took a walk down to the local creek. A very sorry sight greeted me as I looked down the bank to an almost dry watercourse. It appeared that some of the water had been pumped out for the town's inhabitants, another sign of the continuing drought. The morning session went well, even though the threat of rain gave the outside activity shots some urgency. I finished around mid-day and left town for Melbourne.... read more

12-15 May 2003 Deniliquin is a nice enough town, but I'm afraid its one of the those places I have worked in before and have seen most of the interesting places on the previous visit. In the afternoons after work I find myself wondering the main street aimlessly. Most country towns the size of Deniliquin have public library's and I often spend a couple of hours on the internet, sending emails to my girlfriend and two children in Melbourne. Then its back to the motel to watch TV and wait for room service to deliver my evening meal. The last three days have been busy and tomorrow I will be working in Mathoura, which is only thirty kilometres south of town. This motel will be home for one more night. ... read more
