11 May 2003 Following my usual route through Yarra Glen, Yea and Seymour, I was heading towards Bendigo then further north to Swan Hill. Eventually arriving in Balranald about forty kilometres over the border in New South Wales. A Flag Motel this time which isn't too bad. It was three o'clock in the afternoon and plenty of daylight left, so decided to take the road north out of town to photograph the sunset. Forty kilometres along the Ivanhoe Road I still hadn't seen any of the lakes that were marked on the map. Ivanhoe was two hundred kilometres further on and there was no point continuing. The sunset wasn't much but I did use it as a backdrop for some video I shot of the car driving along the road that splits the flat landscape. I ... read more

4 May 2003 It was around mid-day when I left Melbourne and headed off to Albury. The journey up to the border town was pleasant, taking four hours to complete. The weather was fine and the countryside was a little greener after recent rains. As I crossed the bridge at Bonnie Doon it was evident that the drought had not broken, as there was no water to be seen in Lake Eldon. I had booked into the Australian Park Motor Inn and unpacked my gear into room four. There was no room service on Sunday nights and I couldn’t be bothered finding a pub to buy a counter meal, so just got take-away. Watched TV for most of the evening, I’m happy to report this motel has cable TV, which includes Discovery and Movie Channels. 5 ... read more

Wow! the first word uttered out of my mouth upon seeing the coastline. What a beautiful beach, the lighthouse gives it charming feel but what strikes me the most is just how turquoise the ocean is!!! intense colour!!. Almost as nice as Blackpools alluring coast. Byron is a nice little town with a mix of hippies backpackers and your normal holiday makers, and refreshingly devoid of all the chains like McDonalds and Burger king, consists of basically one main street with a gorgeous beach and coast line at its end, and good nightlife. esp. Cheeky Monkeys! We went kayaking out in the sea and were amazed at how soon we were surrounded by Dolphins! they even came up close and made eye contact it was amazing to experience & just see first hand. The sense of ... read more

Before arriving in Byron bay we are staying over night at a sheep station in the mddle of nowhere. 55 of us crammed in the barn for a party after a day of sheep shearing and general farm stuff, i had an absolutely brilliant time here. First the cowboy staff dumped a big basket of dresses in the middle of the barn and informed us that we had to wear something, i took advantage of this and satisfied a fetish of mine and wore a cute 80's dress. Then it was the bull riding competion, which was actually an oil drum with four huge rubber bands connected to the walls, which were tugged upon violently by the staff. In the end i won! (with abit of cheating i admit) and was rewarded with a local bottle ... read more

Down under at last!!! How does it feel to be on the other side of the world? Fantastic!! scary new different and exciting. One of the first things i noticed about being in Sydney was the upside down moon. It seems silly but it really made me feel that i was on the other side of the world. Seeing famous landmarks like the statue of liberty and big ben in london are always special moments for me but when i walked around the corner in Sydney on my first day unveiling the Opera House i was speechless. well i was'nt i actually said 'f*cking hell' but you know what i mean. It is a beautiful building in a gorgeous harbour, like everything else: seeing it on Tv so many times does not prepare you for the ... read more

I flew into Sydney - from Auckland on the 21st Jan 2003. For two days I stayed in a scummy hostel in Kings Cross, an area with a deserved reputation. I headed over to Bondi - found a superior hostel - Indy's Backpackers and hung out. Again the backpacker crowd had changed - this time lots more young English and Irish travellers - on years working visa, looking for work, and taking pretty much whatever came their way. I got on with them but didn't make any friends or meet people of a like mind. I met up with Matt, Tank and Hamish - Matt the guy I travelled most of the states with had come out to Sydney on a working visa, got a job in the city and lived in Bondi. The lifestyle he ... read more
