Hello Everyone I am having a catching up session with the blogs again then I'm up to date. It's quite hard to find computers that are quick and cheap and they have them at Sydney so I am making the most of it! I've put some more pictures on aswell of Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie which were two stops on my way back down through New South Wales towards Sydney. My first stop was Coffs and I loved it! I stayed at the YHA for the first time and that was great. They were really friendly and it was in a good location. The difference with the YHA's seems to be the people that stay in them. There is is much wider group of people, including much older people and familys in them rather than ... read more

Day 87 Coffs Harbour Another sunny morning so we enjoyed a walk to the nearby headland at Emerald Beach. The ground was very wet, the wind very gusty but the waves were quite spectacular, definitely not a time and place for surfing here. Coffs Harbour is a popular holiday destination so we went to have a look why. It has a pretty harbour and great bays for the surfers to catch some waves. We have a walk along the headland by the harbour which turns out to be a wildlife walk where many birds nest. After cooking lunch we travel for about 2 hours south to Port Macquaire and arrived in time to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine on the beach. We enjoyed an evening stroll along the river, which felt quite refreshing as we don't ... read more

'I love a sun-burnt country, a land of sweeping plains...' I never thought much about this poem when we read it in English back in my high school days. Now as a grown-up Aussie ex-pat, the words have such a resonance with me. Flying back into Sydney was the high point of the past 12 months for me. No matter how many amazing places we go or what brilliant things we see, there really is no place like home. If only I was like Dorothy and could give my heels three clicks and find myself on the beach at Nobbys or sitting in my favourite cafe in Newcastle sipping chai! But we mere mortals were once again victim to the 22 hour flight home. I must confess I don't altogether mind the whole flying thing. My ... read more

Monday February 23 was the day we left Port Macquarie. Our bus was mid day, so that meant carrying around our stuff while biding some time. Our bags are big and heavy, but we’d been getting used to them. The bus ride to Coffs Harbour was another 3 hours. Once in town, we were picked up by a courtesy bus that would take us to the hostel. A lot of hostels have this, which is extremely handy when it’s located several kilometers out of town. That night we checked out the local port, and relaxed at the hostel. Long bus rides definitely take a lot out of you! The next day was a fairly lazy day. I had been given a head’s up from a roommate that the community centre next door had some free wireless ... read more

As we headed further South down the coast we stopped at one of the tourist attractions we had been told we must visit - the big banana - what can i say - it was highly entertaining when we realised that the whole thing centred on a huge concrete banana! Its part of a banana plantation and we walked around the area, enjoying the sky walk and candy making demonstration (with free tasters). The most entertaining thing however was the trip to the gift shop - how many novelty banana items can a company make - thousands is the answer - all of varying degrees of naffness but good for a laugh!!! It was a good stop - free unless you decide to go to the banana lecture or have a go in the tobogans / ... read more

A short drive a little further down the coast we spent a couple of nights at Moonee Beach in a camp site on the estuary. The weather has taken another turn for the worse so we're all waterproofed up again. The wildlife is amazing and Pete's becoming quite the Dr Doolittle particularly with the Lorikeets and other birds getting very friendly....We caught our first glimpse of kangaroo's in the wild as a couple bounced passed us whilst in Arrawarra. While in the area we visited Red rock, Corindi beach, Arrawara, Woolgoolga and Emerald beach and look at me now headland. I have to say that Corindi Beach was stunning but I warned you last time that I like them all! As the weather improved after a night of rain we were able to explore Moonee Beach ... read more

Port Macquarie is a town on the Gold coast between Sydney and Brisbane. There are not many tourists here compared to other towns (Byron Bay!!) so its a really nice spot to relax on the beach which is exactly what we did. We parked the van in the beach carpark and spent a couple of days working on our tan (not very Australian thing to do as they all avoid the sun)... It was hard to drag ourselves away from here as it was so pretty but we forced ourselves into the car and drove to Coffs Harbour as Steve wanted to jump of the pier there and get over his fear of jumping into water!! The main beach in town has really strong current and is onyl safe for a few mad surfers so we ... read more

Well Palm Beach was fab..... didnt see any H&A filming which I was hugely disappointed about but I did get to see the surf club with Alf Stewarts name on it, bonus!! I did want to do some replays of some H&A scenes but Alen wasn't so keen so I didn't push it too far!! We also took a trip up the Blue Mountains for a night camping and decided to bring Emily & Conor with us, they had never been camping so we thought this was a great idea! We set up camp in a campsite in Katoomba and decided to be very cultural and take the 1 and a half hour trip to the Jenolan Caves..it was all going great until Joey (the van!) started making a back firing noise everytime we were going ... read more

Geo: -30.2823, 153.129After leaving Byron Bay, we needed to find a picnic spot and found one on grass by a creek, where we had a splendid lunch with no one around. The benefits of the camper van were quite clear as a quiet after lunch snooze was easy to do.On the Pacific Highway we spotted the Big Prawn and at Coff's Harbour we were treated to the Big Banana, which was the first of the big things and started the craze in 1964. A whole theme park has been built around the Big Banana-ok for teeny weenies but not for us. However we had to stop for the mandatory photo. We checked in at the Novotel, which is a sprawling place with rooms which dont follow a logical numbering sequence. The grounds are lovely with 9 hole ... read more
