We spent 3 nights in Newcastle, which was enough actually. It was a nice place but there wasn't really that much to do! We stayed at the Newcastle Backpackers in a 4 bed room with ensuite. It wasn't exactly an ensuite cos there was no toilet! The shower was ok but you couldn't really move in it or the water would be everywhere! Plus there was only a tiny little curtain covering the window which was no fun cos every man and his dog could see in!! We took a walk along the prominade which was beautiful. We saw the colourful bars and restaurants which was in my Lonely Planets guide, along with the "giant penis" as its referred to by the locals which was actually the Queens Wharf Tower. Spent the day at Nobbys beach ... read more

On our last day in Byron I managed to burn my eyebrows and my ears. When I woke up the next day my ride sife of my face, which I slept on was completely swollen. I now know that I have to put sunscreen EVERYWHERE! We are now in Coffs harbour which means... WE ARE NO LONGER SLEEPING ON THE GROUND!! I had never been so happy to sleep in a bed, and slept like a baby, hahah. We were only here for a couple of days, and pretty much just wandered around the city. Smaller places in Australia are known for their large monuments of random objects. Naturally, we started our trip by visiting a giant banana, and it was definitely as cheesy as it sounded... hahh. We then wandered over to a dutch themed ... read more

8/1/09 = Coffs Harbour Was really looking forward to a lay in today, but just didn't work out. Rolled over at 7am and got really bad cramp in left leg. Took all my effort not to scream out loud; cramp = not good when sharing a room with 5 other people. Gritted teeth while awful cramp came and went for 30mins, then had to try and get down ladder of top bunk to get to toilet. Ladders awful at best of times, but when only got 1 functioning leg and trying to be quiet = nightmare! Hobbled/hopped down it and crawled off to bathroom. V.sore leg and getting back up ladder was worse than getting down. Had to prop leg up for next hour then...no chance of any more sleep! Waited until everyone else up at ... read more

2nd January 2008 - SURF SCHOOL BEGINS I didn't sleep too well despite being exhausted. I think I was scared that my alarm wouldn't go off so i'm sure I woke up at least every half hour. I got out of bed at about 5.45....way too early to be up and about!!! I showered, dressed, packed the rest of my stuff and made my way to Kings Cross Station where I caught a train to Central Station. So hot and humid even at 6am and carrying the bag wasn't fun........it's times like this that I miss the van!!! Once at Central Station I wandered around trying to find the pick up point. After half an hour I still had not found it so I phoned the surf camp who explained exactly where I needed to be....woo ... read more

A very happy new year to everyone. We have purchased our new home for 2009, a yacht called Sunboy and we leave Australia on the 18 March to head to Hamble Le Rice, just south of Southampton in England where we begin a whole new adventure. At this point in time, we dont know exactly where we will head to for the northern european summer, whether it is up to the Baltic Sea or head south for Morocco, we will just wait and see. First off, we hope to spend a couple of months sailing around the south of England and then across to France and cruise around the Channel Islands and Brittany, we shall see. At this point in time, we are not sure how long we will be away for, that is in the ... read more

It's true what they say. Aussies really do go the beach on Christmas day. We could get used to Christmas like this. We were fortunate to be spending the Christmas holiday in Moonee Beach, near Coffs Harbour, with Chris's sisters in-laws (the hosts with the most!) Jim and Pauline. What a fantastic spot and what fantastic hosts. As happens with many people on Christmas eve we had to make that last mad rush to the mall for the last minute gift shopping. And to have Phia's (Chris's neice) picture taken with Santa Claus in her new christmas dress. In Australia, shopping mall santas are housed in sand castles. Once the shopping was completed we headed back home to prepare for a delicious feast. We had our Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve. Served outside on the patio, ... read more

Matt had broken his sunglasses so our first port of call was to go into Port Macquarie town to try to find him a new pair. I was so tempted to go clothes shopping but I managed to restrain myself. I did however, pick us out a five bedrooms house close to the beach with pool and massive garage for about the same value as our house while being nosey in estate agent windows! When he’d finally picked some new sunnies we drove to some of the nearby beaches until we finally found a near deserted golden sandy bay. Perfect for kite flying. The next couple of hours were spent with me laying on the beach reading my book in the baking sunshine, while Matt ran around the beach playing with his new toy. He seemed ... read more

To Lennox Head Surrounded by raucous rugby players (Fijians and Australians) we had not slept well and were therefore eager to move on to quieter parts. We had left our towels and sandals out to dry overnight and were lucky that they were not pinched. One guy in another van was not so lucky - he had his flip flops (or thongs as they are known over here) stolen and was enraged when he found out! It was amusing though watching him cycle around the site barefoot (I do not think he had any other shoes!) with a face like thunder in search of them. We continued our southbound journey as far as Lennox Head, known for good surf and Lake Ainsworth, a freshwater lake brown in colour due to the tannins from tea trees lining ... read more

We have just spent four days on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise and the weather wasn't exactly perfect. We spent a day and a half in Brisbane - on the Sunday we hired a couple of Tandems and cycled around the river - we cycled over the Story Bridge - which is a bit like Sydney Harbour but not as pretty. We left Brisbane on the Monday morning and by the time we reached Surfers Paradise it was raining - luckily we had a really nice apartment that was bigger than our flat. It rained on our 3rd day there but we got a nice day on our fourth day and we sunbathed on the beach - and got a little bit burnt - as this is Surfers Paradise the waves are really big so ... read more

October 6, 2008 Not every day is totally great. We spent a frustrating morning dealing with rental campers. I told you it was too good to be true. To make a boring story short we ended up driving a nice rental car out of Sydney at 2 PM. Joe didn’t seem to have much trouble driving on the left side of the road sitting on the right side of the car, but he is still turning on the windshield wipers when wants the turn signals and we both always seem to start to get in the wrong side of the car. I am sure glad Joe is doing the driving because there’s no way I could feel comfortable doing it. Because today is Labor Day there were “Driver Reviver” stands along the freeway offering coffee and ... read more
