We are leaving Coffs Harbour today and it’s a shame to go as we’ve had so much fun here. As you can see we visited the big banana. We skipped the tour and went straight into the fields for a feed. No bananas for us of course, just lots of amphibians and reptiles. Yum! We took a day trip to Dorrigo Rainforest. There is a nice walk and a great view up there. I was happy we didn’t stay the night as rainforests are not for me. Too damp and dark. I like a nice open wetland or farm. We’ve been so lucky with the weather on this trip. It has rained almost every day! I hear it’s pretty dry at the Reed Bed. I hope you get some rain down there soon so I can ... read more

Day 17, 28/9/11 Half way mark through my surfing week and we woke up early to get a morning of surfing in. I managed to stand up a little more but with a little help from the surfing guy of course; you get a big buzz when you stand up, unfortunatley for me it doens't happen very often. After a further 3 hours on the coach we arrived at Spot X, accomodation wasn't great, they were tiny storage containers with 6 beds in and no room to move whatsoever. Had dinner and then some games around the campfire. I won a game around the campfire - the game was called 'The Wax Box Challenge'. The game is simple, you all sit around the campfire and then they put two big cardboard boxes upside down on the ... read more

In the Homeland, Easter is a halfhearted affair. An egg or two is exchange and maybe a family meal to acknowledge the day. Australia, however, takes the holiday far more seriously. We left Brisbane on Thursday after dropping our beloved camper back. We said our goodbyes to Alex (who was off for a weekend with his girlfriend) and boarded a Greyhound bus from Brisbane down to Coffs Harbour, a fun filled 8 hour journey. However, the whole of Australia was flocking to the coast in a frenzied exodus. Thursday was their last day of work before the holiday period and the roads were packed. 10 hours later, we arrived at a small bus stop on the outskirts of Coffs Harbour. It was 1am, there were no taxis and no maps. The bus left us steaming on ... read more

New South Wales does beaches like Bond does women - its nailed the age old challenge of matching quality with quantity! Wherever we go the sky is blue, the sand is white and the waves are MASSIVE! And if thats not enough with just a little effort you can usually find your very own hidden retreat to enjoy all three of these holiday-in-the-sun-staples. After taking in the stunning Blue Mountains it was time to get back on the most famous backpacker trail on this planet - surely doing Australias east coast in a "campa" must rival skinny dipping and skydiving in the "gotta do before you die" stakes?! By now we had well and truly settled into our (equally vital) campervan roles - Claire: the determined driver with a mere 2500 kilometres of unknown Ozzy roads ... read more

We got ourselves all packed up and sadly left our beautiful apartment on the gold coast. We drove over to Janet's beach unit and we all walked down along the beach to the surf club for breakfast. It was a good last visit with Janet, Graham and Katie. We headed off down the coast again. We got to Byron Bay and lucked out getting a parking spot in the main part of town. We had a little walk around. It's a very artsy hip little beach town. Lots of backpackers around. We grabbed some stuff for lunch and stopped in at the information center. We decided to drive up to the lighthouse but we just took a look form the car as you had to pay to park up at the lighthouse. We got some good ... read more

Decided to stay in Coffs Harbour for 2 nights so I didn't have to travel 12 hours to Sydney and Coffs Harbour was a bit quiet. Day I arrived it was unbelievably hot and was a bit lazy in doing anything as I arrived at 3. I was going to try and do some surfing the following day, as I have yet do any, but it was raining and I just couldn't be bothered so went for a walk along the creek into the centre of the town and there wasn't much there. So again didn't do much at all.... read more

Was time to carry on up the coast to various beach side towns. Wednesday 19th Jan- Had a walk down to the harbour, the hostel was half way between the town and the harbour so the location was perfect. Walked out to the nature reserve and along the jetty before having lunch on the beach. Then walked the length of the deserted beach which was beautiful. Made it back to the hostel just in time as there was a huge thunderstorm. Paul, Lindsey, Katy and Beth left the hostel for the bus station and me and Danny stayed another night. It was pizza night at the hostel so had pizza and played cards with some people at the hostel before bed. Thursday 20th Jan- Got up at 5am to catch the early bus to Byron Bay. ... read more

The mildly offensive advertfrom the Australian Tourist Board that was running a few years ago promised that they had got the sharks out of the water, the ‘roos off the golf course and poured us a beer so what were we waiting for? I too asked myself ‘Where the bloody hell am I?’ on the drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbour on the day after Boxing Day. It was nine o’clock at night, teeming down with tropical rain and we had been on the Highway of Death (as the locals affectionately call the Pacific Highway) for over eight hours. Road-train after road-train had pulled up so close to the back bumper of our tiny, defenceless Spaceship© that I couldn’t even make out their headlights, such was the glare from the wing mirrors. A couple of drivers ... read more

The outlook from the Spaceship© is hardly panoramic, given the lack of room for manoeuvre. Diana and I lay squeezed up tight (not through passion!) on our backs looking through the rear-window above us and bemoaned another gloomy start of day. As this was a new camper, we were unaware that this was the effect of the heavily-tinted glass, and that the sound of people rushing by was them making for the beach rather than dashing for the loo in the rain, as had been the case yesterday. When we finally emerged from the crypt we were dazzled by beautiful blue skies, a hot sun and hundreds of exotic birds chasing back and forth across the campsite. We have just spent a day and a half playing on the sand, and in the surf, of the ... read more
